While in Indianapolis this weekend, I went with my friend to visit her mother who recently became a…read moreresident of Independence Village in Avon. I was impressed from the minute I walked in the door. The receptionist was so welcoming, and she and my friend had a great conversation upon entering. The first thing I noticed was how clean the facility is (it was recently freshly painted) and how wide the hallways are, which allows easy access for walkers, etc. We went up to her mother's one bedroom apartment on the third floor and it was a good size for one person, complete with kitchen facilities and a big bathroom. (There are studios, and one- and two-bedroom apartments and I was able to see all of them on my visit.) While walking the hallways, I noticed the colorful artwork on the walls, the theater, the library, the activities center and several other amenities that indicated to me this was more a community than a "nursing home". It is quite a cheerful and friendly atmosphere. We then went down to lunch and sat with her and another resident. They both stated the food was quite good and they liked the selections provided for each meal (breakfast, lunch and dinner). The dining room is spacious, and the staff is amazing, friendly and interactive. While sitting in the dining room, the Director, Sue, came to the table to talk to her residents and we had a pleasant conversation also. I told her how impressed I was with this facility, and she thanked me, but also thanked me for allowing her to administer to "our loved ones that we put in her care". I was impressed! Sue definitely is dedicated and takes special pride in making sure the residents are well cared for and happy. If you are looking for a place to care for your loved ones when the time comes, I suggest you look no further than this facility. It really is top-notch! It also has a Memory Care facility. Although I did not visit that section, my friend said it is just as impressive.

After about a month, I realized my mom needed more one on one care so I asked the care giver for the name of her company. I met with the owner Pattie when she did her assessment of my mom and hired CCC the next day. From that point forward I was able to relax knowing that my mom was in good hands with competent care givers that could assist me with my mom's care. They went above and beyond, especially just prior to my mom's passing. They took care of all of us, not just my mom.

She said they could help & I would get a call from office on Mon 7/29. No call. I called on office on 7/30 & spoke to Sam. I then gave her her 3 dates I was requesting help. She asked if I would need mostly mornings because those are busiest times but they "would make it work". One date I gave I said could be very flexible with time just let me know what works. She said she would pass info onto Patti. I have yet to receive any phone call or follow up. First appointment was for today 8/6. From one nurse to another I guess my expectations were too high! This post would not allow 0 stars.

Most aides care, but have not really been trained to do what is really required of them. Some RN nurses will be very vague in relaying info if there might be a "fall" injury. If you ask for more checks on your family resident, you will be told that most likely your family member will be unable to get those checks. They do them, but only every 3-4 hours during the night (when most residents need help in getting up to go to the bathroom, or might feel the need to just get up & walk around). My mom fell during the night & we discovered she probably had been on the floor for maybe an hour or more -- found completely by accident when an aide happened to pass her room. Incident report very vague. There are a select few who show much care, but like any other place some are there because they know how much help is lacking & they are there for an underpaid paycheck. Most aides work another job to supplement their income, so they are already tired & literally fail to be kind or caring to the residents. There was a huge turnover in administration within the 5 months our mom was there. And, we found out that the lead administer was just traded from another long term care facility. (Traded from one set of problems to another set of problems.) I've wondered if the problems at the former facility were ever actually solved. We also came to realize that there were several other falls on this same hall. This makes me wonder if residents were able to be up some, but not really watched because of this false sense of ability. Fall risk should always be a huge concern & not taken for granted -- which I believe is exactly what happened. Our mom had 4 falls in less than 3 weeks & each one was progressively worse. Our mom did not survive getting better after her 4th fall -- she passed in only 20 days. Each day less & less improvement & we watched her slowly pass in greater & greater discomfort. Mom had a good hospice team as well, but they could not be there all the time. Attempting to keep mom "comfortable" during those last 20 days got quite challenging. We were questioned several times by Med Cart staff. We knew what mom could have for her pain management, but still got questioned! There were a couple of times we had to go to a local pharmacy & get the needed med as they did not have on hand, otherwise our mom's pain would have gotten out of control. I'm being honest and forthright in my review. If you feel something could be a "red flag" concern to you for your family member or friend, say something. Report it. You are your family members or friends advocate! We have to be the voice for the voiceless.
