The latter is an essential ingredient in every allergy suffers kitchen... eating honey that is grown locally can diminish the effects of hay-fever as well as a host of other allergies. The fact that the Farmers Market is in the car-park at Arthur John's is an absolute boon! Arthur John's is possibly the best hardware shop in the known universe, and I love visiting it, even if I don't have anything specific to buy. I always come out with a couple of items that I have been meaning to get, but always forget to purchase when I'm on a shopping mission elsewhere. If tools float your boat, this is a DIYers heaven! The prices are incredibly cheap considering the quality of the stock available. The Farmers Market isn't as cheap, but the quality of the goods is second to none! There are burgers and other food items cooked on the sight, so you can eat while you wander, and it's ideal if you're looking for good, honest food without the stress of supermarket shopping. The stallholders are mostly friendly and keen to chat about their produce, and prices are reasonably compared to health food shops and similar. A great thing to support that adds to the traditional feel of the more independent aspects of Oxford shopping and makes the big town seem more like a local farming market.

I've been attending the market for over three years now, and I rarely miss a month. The stalls always draw me back when I'm needing a healthy variation to my diet, and the price range is perfect value for money. Specifically regarding the Beans & Leaves stall, which sells a wide range of both coffee beans and loose teas. Most of these infusions rarely reach the £4 mark for 100g, which results in more than enough tea for two for several months! The tea stall holder himself is a bubbly yam yam who'll immediately strike up a conversation. It's just a shame that his stall is on the windiest part of Moseley, meaning that a lot of his tea ends up at the other side of the market! But of course, on first visit, you'll want to sample everything. Whether this be jam, ostrich burgers, bakery, alcohol or cheese (in fact, I highly recommend the Warwickshire Truckle), there's literally something for everyone. I've also tried a range of unlikely produces which sometimes appear at the market, such as a piece of fruit called a quince, and a green tea cake, both equally as delicious as the other. As a worthy winner of "best farmers market in the UK 2012", Moseley Farmers Market is a treasury to Birmingham and brings a tasteful locality to the streets of Moseley.

And I wasn't disappointed. The market is exactly what you would want a medium to large sized market to be. Offering a huge range of locally sourced goods sold to you by the actual producers of the items, you can get most things you would need to stock up the fridge, freezer and cupboards (with a good amount of locally made crafty things too). It's in a pretty setting and has a lovely community feel to it. We managed to find parking in the small shopping area just up from St Mary's Row at around 9:15am, but parking could be a bit of a nightmare if you were getting here later. The square area offered braces of pheasants for £6, cheese, wine, condiments and artisan food products and the High Street area (which we hadn't realised was there until we were leaving - D'oh) offers more of a crafty element. We had a nice little poke around the stalls and chatted to many of the business owners about their products and they were more than happy to talk to us and advise where the items are made and the ingrediants that go into them. We got some lovely locally made fizzy red wine (Did you know there are vineyards in the Midlands?) for £10 a bottle, some hot sauce from Pip's and was very tempted by cakes and unusual scotch eggs... We are definitely planning to go back. If you haven't been, you must go. Get there early if you're planning to drive but the buses down to Moseley drop you off right in the thick of the action, do that might be the best idea.

All of the stalls are from the local area, and the people are all so friendly and happy to chat. The goods may be more expensive than you could get in a supermarket, but you know that you are helping the local economy and for the quality it is well worth the extra few pennies you will spend. I do recommend that you get there quite early in the day though, as otherwise you may find that many of the stalls have sold the majority of their products.

In fact, this is such a permanent and well loved fixture of the Cardiff local flavour, that even when the market is not in session, you'll find a series of fruit and vegetable sculptures in the same spot. These cross sections of cucumbers and apples can be looked through to see the grand Millennium Stadium beyond. If you're a fan of keeping your carbon footprint as small as possible, then this is the place for you. All of the products on sale here are very high quality and extremely local. This is a fantastic way to while away a Sunday afternoon. The only problem is that I'd like it to be larger with a better selection!

It also has craft stores and flowers and really, really good coffee. Then there's the great farmers market in Cowbridge that takes you out into the Vale along the A48, where the views are marvelous, and the possibilities of combining a trip to Cowbridge with some fine walks and fun things to do in the countryside are seemingly endless. Nevertheless the newport Farmers market is larger than the others, and is well worth a visit. It occurs every 2nd and 4th Friday of each month, as opposed to on the weekend, as do all of the others mentioned.
