I typically stay at Courtyards and Hilton Garden Inns during my business travels - and so I was thrilled to find a Courtyard in Altoona, PA for my recent trip there. Alas, three stars is all I can award for this hotel. The lobby area is very nice and updated to meet Courtyard's new marketing theme: "It's a New Stay." Unfortunately, the rooms themselves leave much to be desired. My room was on the second floor. In the bathroom, there was a section of ceiling that had been patched - and something was peeling off the patched area. I touched the ceiling and a good bit of the material flaked off - like dead peeling skin. The flat panel HD TVs have no HD channels/programming available to them. And the remote control for my room was hard to use. You had to press the power button really hard and hold it for about 3 seconds to get the TV to come on. And if you wanted to cycle through the channels going up - you were okay. But if you wanted to cycle through the channels downward, you had to slowly, push down and press hard on the down channel button. The room did have a small refrigerator. The bed was reasonably comfortable, although I would have preferred something with a firmer mattress. The AC wall unit was set to 60 degrees when I arrived. But there was no way the air coming out of that unit was 60 degrees, I had to to turn on the fan full time to the room to cool off and not be stuffy. Free internet access is provided - both via ethernet and wireless. The room was fairly clean. They really need to do some work on improving this hotel. The staff were a bright spot. Friendly, professional, and helpful.

Actor from the "The Blind spot" stayed here. I understand he was gentle in person as he was in the movie.

This Courtyard is attached to the local Civic/Convention Center. I have never seen that before and I thought that was pretty cool. Definitely, if you are attending an event at the convention center or nearby, this is the play to stay. At first glance, the property looks fairly new, but talking with staff, they less than 15y old. Rooms were fresh and clean. The Bistro (restaurant) was excellent. I just hate that they close before 10p. The lobby was excellent. Modern furniture was comfortable and placed well to care for the flow of traffic and plentiful, especially for groups coming back from a night out or events at the convention center. My only complaint is the gym and it is minor. The gym is too small and there were no wipes. I am a gym snob, so that is important too me. Otherwise I highly recommend.

I will never ever stay here again. My husband and I travel and stay alot of different places. And this is the only hotel we stayed at with a desk clerk with an attitude and and no respect for the customer's. We have never been so disrespected . She treated us horrible. Plus the rooms were unclean our jaccuzi leaked through the wall into our bathroom, bathroom wall stained from water damage, mold in shower stall, Dated and stained furniture. And the Suite, the heater wouldn't turn down or off , plus unclean . Nothing in suite extra , no silverware, cups . Nothing. My daughter, son inlaw, my husband and myself. All disrespected from desk clerk.

Stains on the carpet.

I've been traveling a lot lately for work and have stayed in several Courtyard by Marriott hotels. The lobby area is new and inviting but the rooms are old and outdated. The carpet is dirty and gross with stains. The furniture is scratched and old. The decor is horrendous. There is plenty of parking, the staff seem nice although I didn't have much interaction with them. I only gave two stars because of the room. Pretty disappointing for a Marriott property. The comfort inn down the street was much nicer.

Run of the mill Courtyard. Nothing fancy, nothing disappointing. Good stay. Quiet even in my room next to the elevator--surprisingly.

Front desk staff was lovely but the hotel was. It worth the price. Room was small and bare.

It is connected to the convention center so I am sure they need all this space when an event is going on.

Our room was spacious and spotless and the bathroom was clean and roomy as well. The fitness center here was exceptional. 8 or so treadmills, full rack of dumbells, cable machines and benches and a pool that was clean and warm as bathwater. The breakfast was hot and fresh. I had eggs, toast and a homemade waffle but the spread was huge! I will definitely be back!

When I spoke to the front desk, the gal interrupted me defensively to explain why there was noise. I had to run the air conditioning to mask the noise from the patio and also the road behind the hotel; the result was that I had to listen to the droning air conditioning and that my room was freezing. I also experienced issues with printing a tax exempt form and the staff finding it. The printer I used printed only a portion of the form so the staff suggested I email it to him. He said he received it and signed it and took the taxes and fees off the bill. The day of my departure, the occupancy tax was present on my bill. I visited the front desk and another staff said he found my form and it would be taken care of. An hour or so later, the bill hadn't been corrected so I called and spoke with another clerk (day shift) who stated she would look for the tax exemption form and take care of the bill. It was closer to my departure time and still no correction so I called down again and she admitted she couldn't find the form and wasn't sure if it was lost and the email deleted so I sent it again before the situation was handled. I complained to an area manager who emailed back apologizing and saying my feedback was valuable and would be used for training purposes, etc ... The response wasn't helpful considering how little sleep I got and how dissatisfied I was with my stay. Sometimes things happen but it's how they're handled that makes a difference. At check-in, if my room preference couldn't be granted, this should have been clearly stated. When a complaint was made about the noise from the patio, the desk clerk shouldn't be defensive and interrupt, rather she should have listened and, if possible, offer a solution. I have no idea what the problem was with the tax exemption form but two people said they had the form and it would be handled but then it wasn't. The third person, the morning of checkout, did everything possible to help and was friendly about it so thank you. In the end, Sue, the morning of departure, was friendly and helpful; the unseen housekeeping staff was great as my room was very clean. The door, however, was broken as turning the knob down wouldn't open it -- only pulling it up worked. The shower was great. The bed was uncomfortable and the bedding too thin. Breakfast was definitely better than at other nearby hotels -- more choices, the items seemed of better quality, and were more attractively presented. I'm disappointed with my experience and recall having similarly disappointing experiences at this property years ago which is why it's been so long since I returned.

It's also sold-out many times during the week which means we book as early as possible when we know we're headed to Altoona. Checking in is usually easy and fast, the rooms are clean, breakfast is fine, and the staff is familiar with tax exemptions and accurately removes the appropriate charges. This last time, my sink was clogged and the cheerful, helpful maintenance man came up to my room immediately upon his arrival and cleared it out and also washed the sink out afterward. The front desk staff was friendly, the housekeeping staff was effective, and my stay was a pleasant one. I also like the TV stations at Holiday Inn more than other hotels. I don't watch TV at home so having TCM is nice when I'm away working. Thanks for providing a nice home away from home.
