But still, the staff and faculty generally and genuinely care for the students, and the indoor and outdoor spaces are maintained, and the students are encouraged to grow -- as individuals and also as a community. Looks like a mini neighborhood on the inside. Very modern inside. RMHS ranks top amongst secondary high schools in Montgomery County, Maryland as well as the rest of the nation. I was in the first class ever at the brand-new Wootton, 1970, and we were known as the "Redneck high school." My parents were appalled that we were being sent there instead of Churchill. Funny, too, all these comments about lack of "diversity." Aside from noting that a high-school education fails to teach that true diversity has nothing to do with how people look, I can tell you in those days we had quite a few black students who were bused in from Tobytown over on River Road. (It was closer than Churchill.) I generally hated high school so I can't comment on the quality of education, though there were a few outstanding teachers, two of whom became personal friends. Today Montgomery County is high on my list of places to avoid on principle.

While I did get top-quality education at Thomas S. Wootton, aka Woo-ten, or WOOT'n (no one can ever…read morepronounce it), the school itself lacked in diversity. Sure, it was one of the top public schools in the nation with a 95% graduation rate, but everyone was SO spoiled (including myself). If I were to ever move back to MD and have kids, I would never send my kids there. (I guess never say never). Wootton does offer 1st class education, but not 1st class etiquette/social skills. I take 1 star off for the lame brats who go there (including myself, an alumnus)... but seriously 4 stars b/c I don't want the public school system to hate on me.

She's benefited a ton from the individualized attention, small classes, and warm environment where "everyone knows your name".
