Had a really rough pregnancy but my care team was outstanding. The receptionists here are typically a lot friendlier compared to the receptionists at the Webster location. The OBGYN's here are knowledgeable and take their time in answering questions. My labor and delivery team was stupendous and adept at what they did. Shout out to Heidi Cruikshank and Nurse Toni and Nurse Ming for making me feel at home and listening to my delivery plan. It was rough but they made it as smooth as it possibly could have been and I'm forever grateful for them! Postpartum was a nightmare but three nurses in particular were so helpful and never made me feel like I was asking for too much. Donna, Alba and Mary! I hope you ladies get the recognition you deserve because I felt the kindness and warmth extended. I've had an abundance of friends give birth the same year and everyone who gave birth at this location can agree that CPMC is one of the best places to deliver. read more

I received assistance twice from Dr. Jorgenson's team at Sutter Health CPMC on Van Ness. I have a regular pain management specialist, and she has provided clear instructions to administer only specific IV pain medications, as others are ineffective due to my high tolerance and ongoing pain management regimen at home. During my initial hospitalization, Dr. Jorgenson promptly discontinued my pain medications and left me unattended for hours, which compelled me to plead for relief. His attitude was reminiscent of treating me as a street drug addict. I am highly responsible regarding my pain management and communicate explicitly with my pain specialist, Dr. Meredith Adamo, of the Tom Waddell Clinic. My subsequent hospitalization, immediately following the first, was markedly worse. Once again, I was treated as if I were a drug addict. Despite the explicit instructions documented in my chart, I was left without pain medication for five hours, during which my pain exceeded a level of ten. One aspect that Dr. Jorgenson handled well was delegating communication to his team's resident physicians and having them come with comments. However, they were unable to approve my medications. When I requested to speak directly with him, he declined to meet with me, and I was never able to speak with him after the first meeting. It was exceedingly frustrating to be treated as nothing more than a number. After five hours without medication, a resident doctor from Dr. Jorgenson's team approached me to inquire if I wished to transfer to the Davis campus. I consented but emphasized the urgent need for pain medication, having endured a prolonged period without relief. Although he refused to administer the medication, he provided the necessary paperwork for the transfer. I had to assertively state my intention not to sign the documentation to secure the medication, and even then, he offered the minimal possible dose, which caused me considerable distress. I again threatened to withhold my signature to obtain an appropriate dose that would facilitate ambulance transfer with manageable pain. It is profoundly disheartening to have to plead for pain medication that has been approved by my pain specialist, as if I were a drug addict. Healthcare professionals like Dr. Jorgenson undermine trust in the medical system. I only seek medical care when I am critically ill, driven by the fear of enduring unalleviated pain and being regarded as a mere number rather than a human being. Such treatment is unjust. I speak not only on my own behalf but also for others facing similar neglect. While many physicians are commendable, a small percentage, including Dr. Jorgenson, tarnish the reputation of the medical profession. Once again, this does not encompass all of the diligent nurses and doctors in the medical field who perform their duties wholeheartedly and dedicate themselves fully each day. Typically I refrain from writing reviews about the healthcare industry. However both my daughter and I had recent outpatient procedures here. From registration to patient discharge, it was a seamless process And the staff was outstanding. Everyone was friendly and demonstrated professionalism in making sure we were comfortable and well tended to. There's a three level parking garage. If you park more than three hours you can request a voucher from the parking garage staff and receive a discount off your fee. I didn't qualify as I parked for 90 minutes and paid $12 picking up my daughter. Still it was convenient. Kudos to CPMC. read more

My brother found out he had cancer during the week of Thanksgiving. He was admitted on December 9th to the hospital and he began his first round of chemotherapy. The staff on the 9th floor are amazing. His quality of care is excellent and I along with my family are very happy that he is having his treatment here. Nurses do not get a tons of credit. I try to bring in snacks for them when I visit. read more

I came here on Monday for a pretty bad GI bleed. It was caused by a complication with a colonoscopy. It was so bad that I passed out almost immediately after getting into the emergency room. The good: almost everyone here seemed genuinely trying to help... Not just reading from some script. They were courteous, they were understanding, they were friendly, they were professional and they were real. The nurses that had to deal with me had to deal with such disgusting things. I won't write them here. They did it without complaining and they didn't make me feel as disgusting as I felt. I had to stay in the ER overnight because there was no room in the hospital apparently. When I got up to the hospital, the nurses up there were also great. It felt like I could bond with them really quickly. The people that provided transport around the hospital on the gurney were pretty rad and so were the people that delivered the food. As I was leaving one of the nurses let out a little noise as if she was disappointed that I was going. It's little things like that that make you feel good about your experience. I'm a pretty extroverted guy, particularly when I'm in crisis. They seemed to react to that well and I'm so grateful. They consistently took note of the little details. The doctors were really knowledgeable and took care of me quickly and seemed to know exactly what they were doing. There was great bedside manner and they kept me at ease. I've got good faith in them. The facilities are beautiful and very well kept, extremely clean. The bad: there wasn't too much bad if I'm being honest. The only thing I could complain about was that it seemed like the communication between all of the various doctors whose faces kept changing throughout the time I was there was a little mismanaged. My procedure ended up being really late. And I was already on an empty stomach and no water for a long long time. The overnight in the ER was rough as I had to sleep on a gurney and my feet hung off. It was uncomfortable and kind of loud but it's an ER. So I guess what can I expect right? If I'm really objective about it, all of these problems really stem from one thing. I just don't think they have enough doctors... And even though it's a huge campus, it seems like space is pretty limited. Final thoughts: there seems to be a lot of complaints about the place, but I find that reviews about medical centers are usually made emotionally. People go there when they're sick or hurt and sometimes if things don't go right, just a compounding factor. I was on the verge of bleeding out and they kept me from doing so. It was a very serious moment in my life and they walked me through it pretty easily. And I feel like if I were to run into anyone that took care of me while I was there, I could just walk right up to them and give him a high five and they would know who I was. Pretty good place... I'm glad I chose it in my time of need. read more

My 1st surgery, which was a brain surgery yesterday, at Sutter Health CPMC Van Ness Campus and this is specific reviews for ICU nurses post surgery. I had RNs Stephanie Brown overnight post op and Catherine Constantinesco all day after in ICU and if anyone could make you feel like your recovery is important were these 2 RNs. Each did everything, total care. Good patient relation, care, and you never felt like they wouldn't bend over backwards to get you anything you needed. NP Alex was part of this great team and he shared all info with our team of doctors that were monitoring me. After my surgeon gives me the news that they could NOT get all the tumor, it was refreshing to get this quality of care. I hope this review is shared with their nurse manager and them. read more

Had to visit the emergency room and it went fine, the staff were polite and kept me updated. Would just ask nurse Rachel to practice her blood draw technique, I have really good veins and I don't know what she was doing, dropping vials and jabbing the IV with each vial change or something but left terrible bruising that I've never had with blood draws. Honestly the most painful part of the experience but overall as pleasant as could be under the circumstances. read more

I GOT MY KIDNEY TRANSPLANT HERE! JULY 28,2023 aka ya girls new birthday!!!! My second lease on life thanks to my beautiful selfless Tia & the amazing care team at CPMC! You are all amazing human beings. After 3.5 years on dialysis, and 3 years on the transplant waiting list with UC DAVIS. I had an appointment over at UCSF, when I went and met with Dr Katznelson and he told me he doesn't see why I haven't already got a transplant if I'm the perfect candidate and have a donor... it brought tears to my eyes because I thought I'd be on dialysis for another 2-3 years. After UCDAVIS postponing surgery so many times and hearing what Dr Katznelson said, it gave me hope. I immediately told my Tia and she got on it immediately. UCSF managed to get most of my Tias test results and lab work, etc from UCDAVIS because they share the same network, "EPIC" they said they just needed to meet my Tia in person and if all is well, we can have surgery within the next month. My Tia flew down from AZ immediately and did the lab work and within the week they called her to let her know she passed with flying colors and set the date. I then got the call and my life changed forever. From every video visit, in person visit, pre-po, post-op I've had with UCSF I was treated so nicely and felt welcomed. I would like to thank everyone at CMPC from the security who showed us where to go when we arrived, nurses, doctors, surgeons, janitorial staff even the kitchen staff!! Everyone was so nice and helpful. All nurses made me feel comfortable and were sweet to me when coming in to help me, clean my Foley catheter, clean out my drain bag, I know it's sounding gross but they all helped me and made me feel comfortable and never once made me feel bad in anyway. Thank you all who helped me during my stay and for every appointment that led up to my discharge day. I love this hospital and I'm forever thankful to all the staff that helped me. read more

I went to the Emergency Room at CPMC after taking a fall and hitting my head on the sidewalk. As I'm on a blood thinner, I worried about a brain bleed. The ER nurses and Dr. Timothy Duncan were extremely nice and more than competent. They quickly provided me with a CT scan and told me what to expect every step of the way at the hospital and later at home in recovery. They made sure I was comfortable. I was cleared to leave in two hours. I was very pleased by their considerate treatment and would recommend CPMC without hestitation. Thank you for your wonderful care! read more

I'm not sure why the reviews for this hospital are so low. My 99-year old grandmother checked in upon the recommendation from her senior home's doctor on Friday and I finally got to visit her on Sunday--there were COVID protocols that restricted the number of visitors someone in the emergency room could have. Security was good and I always felt safe. Once inside, it's very clean. I love the artwork as well--there's some bright and fun paintings to brighten up the space. However, my 5 stars are for the amazing nurses providing constant smiles and laughs. Susanne, Lidia, Merryl, and Quincey. (While we're at it, shoutout to Drs. Klonk and Ganeson as well--I wasn't sure if they'd take me seriously as the granddaughter when my mom was also there, but they did and they asked the right questions about my grandmother's life.) My adult tennis team has a higher-than-you'd expect number of nurses, yet seeing other nurses at work really made me appreciate their care, patience, and empathy. They have great resources, PPE, beds, and facilities, it's so clean and shoutout to the great staff who sanitize everything multiple times throughout the day and they're also so knowledgeable. The cafeteria was pretty good, I loved the bright and airy space and they had a nice selection of food to-go and drinks. We could fill out a survey to get free coffee too! There was a Starbucks outside the cafeteria that closed in the afternoon which was sad so I couldn't get my PSL (pumpkin spice latte.) I can't imagine better people taking care of my 99-year old grandmother, watching over her, helping her get up and go to the bathroom, feeding her, answering her many questions, and also comforting me and keeping me and my mom (her daughter) up to speed on happenings. read more

First of all there is a guard posted outside the elevators of the hospital's main floor's elevator. This is the elevator you take after you park in the very very confusing, badly designed parking garage. The guard on duty on my last visit was so damn rude. He didn't even greet us or ask us POLITELY what we needed. Once we got out of the elevator we were trying to figure out where the MRI room was to check in. The instructions said through the double doors off the main lobby near the Emergency dept. This guard just rudely demanded to know if we have an appointment. We apparently disturbed him from doing nothing. After we said 'Yes' he just barked that he needed my ID. He never even said why. I had to just look at his actions: He looked at a printed list of appointments and patients' names then had to write my driver's license # on a Visitor's pass. After completing this task he just handed my license and the pass to me without a word. This is the sort of people they hire at this hospital-a PRIVATE HOSPITAL no less. Too bad he didn't get to go back to doing nothing as more patients appeared needing to go through the same procedures. Wow. He actually had to do his job. Next the MRI office personnel were another story-not a great one as well. The check in lady was surly to me. No 'Hello', nothing. She just printed off my paperwork and told me check if the information 'seemed like me' and to sign two pages. She never said 'please' nor 'thank you'. However, while waiting for my appointment there was a white male patient who she treated with so much respect. She greeted him with a smile and a lovely voice. She told him 'please' and 'thank you'. I accompanied my husband here a few months ago and she treated my husband in the same manner. She is racist it's obvious. Strange because she herself has a thick accent and looks like middle eastern. I thought the scan personnel next would be much more professional. No luck. My scan involved having an injected tracer. Firstly the woman who took me in kept staring at me while walking to the procedure room. Worse she had a sort of half smile/half smirk and kept staring at me. After she brought me to the procedure room another young woman just walked in and both she and the first woman stood there just staring at me with that half smile/half smirk look both of them. Then the guy who was charged with injecting me found the worst spot that was painful. Claimed it was the only spot available. It was so unsettling because no one explained why in the heck there were 3 people in the room with 2 of them just standing around staring at me as though I was an alien. Fortunately they were not the ones to perform the actual scan which was handled by a caring professional and assistant. My husband had told me that his experience was stellar. He said the technicians were all kind and nice even told him that he could use the restroom and his phone as you need to wait 30 minutes for the tracer to take effect. The people I got never told me anything. I had to ask where the toilet was located. To think these are the same people servicing Alzheimer's patients is unbelievable. Maybe and hopefully they're kinder with them. So if anybody has to use this campus of CPMC's hospital for scans good luck. It's hit or miss with personnel. And oh God hope you don't need to be admitted here. I had an operation and was admitted 3 years ago. The RNs are very very hit or miss. If you get a good one you're lucky. read more

Wish I could write a review directly to Sutter, cant figure out how. I was referred to the liver specialists due to a mass on my liver that could be a number of benign things, super grateful that they took such good care of me regardless and made sure we had all the answers. Huge thanks to Dr. Guy and Dr. Ward for making me feel comfortable and ensuring I understood everything happening. I had an eventual procedure there (minor liver biopsy, literally a tiny needle taking a sample, no cutting). The day was somewhat chaotic, I work in healthcare, I get it. Charge nurse Jamie immediately explained that there was an emergency ahead of me, understandable, then they figured they could squeeze me in by doing an ultrasound vs CT so i didnt need to wait longer. It was a little awkward being in a peds room with toys for my procedure but glad it was over with faster. When I got moved up to post-op the doctor never put orders in and the nurses were very confused (also don't blame him for having to run to another procedure). They were unable to give me meds or answers for an hour which was frustrating, finally got the OK to leave. I was told to read the AVS, when I didn't know a tiny detail, the nurse felt the need to read me every word front to back which felt excessive. I also shared that the "after-care" instructions didn't really apply to me as they discussed cleaning an open wound, taking antibiotics, etc. (none of which I had). I also pointed out that the doctor that did my procedure gave me the go-ahead to have alcohol in a couple days as my liver function was perfect (and unrelated to my issue), the nurse decided to pass judgement without reading my chart and asked if "I should be drinking" with my liver issues. It felt frustrating and judgemental, I will not disclose her name publicly for her privacy. Just wanting the nurses to spend more time reading a patient's chart to understand what is happening. read more

Zip zip, in and out: I was scheduled for a radiology appointment and was out within 38 minutes. Intake was a snap, the building's brand new so every space has an ultra-bright, Stanley Kubrick feel. CPMC runs like a finely tuned machine, kudos to the nurses, doctors and staff. read more

We were on the PICU. The staff were friendly overall. The doctors were amazing! The facility is clean with updated equipment. The city view is gorgeous! The only downside is parking. It's $35/day to park. Imagine paying $35/day when you're admitted for a week. INSANE!!! Secondly the 1 parent only policy when staying overnight is ridiculous. Children need both parents, especially when they're sick! In addition the parents need each other's support when dealing with a sick child. Lastly, what about people who live an hour or more away? It's not feasible to travel back and forth AND be expected to pay the astronomical parking fee. However, if you can get past the parking and can avoid the peds units, you're in good hands! We registered here for childbirth and are very glad that we did. The nurses are all top notch and extremely helpful, and there are so many different support staff that always check on your needs. You don't need to ask for a lactation specialist or birth certificate expert because they come to you on a set schedule. Rooms are also outfitted well, so you'll be comfortable as mom, dad, or baby. We felt extremely taken care of and would recommend this place to anyone. read more

I had a really positive ER experience here when I had abnormally high fever and other symptoms. I feel compelled to share because it's on the heels of a negative ER experience at UCSF Parnassus, where they couldn't care less if you're keeled over -- the nurses there justified being inattentive and cold with the hospital's long wait times and systemic inefficiencies. Meanwhile, at CPMC Van Ness I was treated with incredible care, got accurate diagnosis, treatment, and supportive care in half the time, everything felt clean and modern, and yeah, I guess I just don't know why we put up with the crap at Parnassus when we can go to CPMC. My PCP had sent a referral to CPMC, and I called to discuss the next steps. So, I haven't met the real doctor yet. I just wanna share my experience. The tone of the admin staff I got on a call with was extremely off-putting. She spoke in a very cold, suppressed tone that was almost machine-like. This lack of warmth made the interaction feel very unwelcoming. Her communication style was far from conversational. It felt as though she was talking down to me, which was both uncomfortable and unnecessary. The conversation was particularly frustrating when she asked for my name. Despite her asking me to pronounce it, she still ended up mispronouncing it. Sure, this sounds petty and I'm usually lenient about names but in the context of what I described above, it didn't feel right. This lack of attention to detail in an essential aspect of customer service was very disappointing. I am genuinely taken aback by the rudeness and lack of professionalism displayed by the admin staff during our phone conversations. If you expect compassion and respect from healthcare providers, so far, that's not what I got from CPMC. read more

I had to go to the ER for strong abdominal pain and had never been to this facility before. Facility is new and clean, staff is very kind, efficient and empathetic and throughout the time I spent in the ER I felt well cared for and had complete confidence in the entire team. Communication was excellent, all tests done promptly with results that came through relatively quickly and with good support even following the ER visit when I had trouble with the prescription. Compared to other ERs and facilities in the city, this is a great center. read more

I half jokingly tell people that we're "quarterly subscribers" to CPMC Van Ness. I wish I wasn't a regular, but with 3 young kids we invariably wind up in the ER from time to time. We have "enjoyed" CPMC's services for the birth of my daughter, head injuries to my eldest son, and a 3-night stay for my middle son's pneumonia among other visits. In each case, the doctors, nurses and staff have been world class. All of the equipment is new (or new-ish) and state of the art, especially compared to the old campus on California St. Managing the logistics of a hospital seems crazy hard. Our daughter was delivered at CPMC Van Ness only a month or two after it first opened. Thankfully, CPMC does a very good job and has worked out some of the logistical kinks since its opening. ...and this wouldn't be a review for a business in San Francisco if I didn't mention parking which is easy and located in the garage underneath the hospital. :-P read more

I am motivated to write a review, after having had a terrible experience with pregnancy in a different city with a different medical facility. CPMC Van Ness is a newer, clean, functioning facility. The post-partum rooms are modern, have views, working tech to order food, and spacious bathrooms. The nursing staff were compassionate and helpful with one exception, and I was met with understanding when I requested to not work with this person again. Prior to delivery I came here for NSTs. Just home after a five day/four night stay for spinal fusion/revision surgery. (Cleaning up some issues from prior surgery 17 years ago and fusing two additional vertebrae.) This would've been five stars but for a couple of issues (enumerated below) that to me seem interrelated. I'll get them out of the way first, then share the many positives. The Bad: 1. Surgery started at 7:30 am, ended at 11:30 am. Was ready to be moved to an inpatient room by 1:30 pm. I didn't get to the room until 9:30 pm. Their explanation: a snafu moving the occupant of "my" room elsewhere. The impact: a half-day of post-op therapy lost. 2. I was being discharged on what I was told was a very busy day -- ER jammed, some people waiting days to be admitted. My EXCEPTIONAL care team was scrambling. In the confusion, I was about to be sent home without a walker my care team said was essential, but hadn't been "officially" ordered. My savior -- Occupational Therapist Kaylin Sansone -- quickly got it resolved. The point: book-ended negative experiences borne of behind-the-scenes chaos. The (really) Good: 1. Over five days, everyone involved in my care -- nurses, physical/occupational therapists, nursing assistants, physicians, etc -- were caring, thoughtful, attentive, and patient. 2. Nurses. You cannot understand unless you're hospitalized how central they are to EVERYTHING. My pre-op nurses kept me calm. My post-op nurse, Peggy, got me through excruciating pain, a bleeding scare and the interminable wait for a room. All my shift nurses and nursing assistants were caring, communicative and patient. 3. Physical and occupational therapists have a big impact on spine surgery patients. Mine were terrific. 4. Hospital docs were great. Really great. My hospitalist had a sense of humor and low key demeanor -- just what I needed. Anesthesia team was awesome -- calling me the night before surgery to check in and texting me after surgery to assure me they'd handled a medication issue with the pharmacy. 5. A relatively new campus -- opened in 2019 --all CPMC Van Ness inpatient rooms are private, spacious and comfortable. Mine had a gorgeous city view (not that I noticed or cared until my last day). Food is meh. Hospital food. Again: I scarcely cared. This wasn't a vacation. I hope hospital administrators are doing all they can to open up every available bed, because I heard regularly from the staff that the place is bursting at the seams. Very nice hospital. They have a Starbucks in the lobby. They had a harpist during lunch time. The staff is friendly. The cath lab has great medical practices and are sticklers for procedure. Recommend getting procedures here lol read more
