Just home after a five day/four night stay for spinal fusion/revision surgery. (Cleaning up some issues from prior surgery 17 years ago and fusing two additional vertebrae.) This would've been five stars but for a couple of issues (enumerated below) that to me seem interrelated. I'll get them out of the way first, then share the many positives. The Bad: 1. Surgery started at 7:30 am, ended at 11:30 am. Was ready to be moved to an inpatient room by 1:30 pm. I didn't get to the room until 9:30 pm. Their explanation: a snafu moving the occupant of "my" room elsewhere. The impact: a half-day of post-op therapy lost. 2. I was being discharged on what I was told was a very busy day -- ER jammed, some people waiting days to be admitted. My EXCEPTIONAL care team was scrambling. In the confusion, I was about to be sent home without a walker my care team said was essential, but hadn't been "officially" ordered. My savior -- Occupational Therapist Kaylin Sansone -- quickly got it resolved. The point: book-ended negative experiences borne of behind-the-scenes chaos. The (really) Good: 1. Over five days, everyone involved in my care -- nurses, physical/occupational therapists, nursing assistants, physicians, etc -- were caring, thoughtful, attentive, and patient. 2. Nurses. You cannot understand unless you're hospitalized how central they are to EVERYTHING. My pre-op nurses kept me calm. My post-op nurse, Peggy, got me through excruciating pain, a bleeding scare and the interminable wait for a room. All my shift nurses and nursing assistants were caring, communicative and patient. 3. Physical and occupational therapists have a big impact on spine surgery patients. Mine were terrific. 4. Hospital docs were great. Really great. My hospitalist had a sense of humor and low key demeanor -- just what I needed. Anesthesia team was awesome -- calling me the night before surgery to check in and texting me after surgery to assure me they'd handled a medication issue with the pharmacy. 5. A relatively new campus -- opened in 2019 --all CPMC Van Ness inpatient rooms are private, spacious and comfortable. Mine had a gorgeous city view (not that I noticed or cared until my last day). Food is meh. Hospital food. Again: I scarcely cared. This wasn't a vacation. I hope hospital administrators are doing all they can to open up every available bed, because I heard regularly from the staff that the place is bursting at the seams. All things considered, I'm grateful for the great people who provided exceptional care. And to all the nurses and support staff on 7 East: you're awesome. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. read more

Funny thing happened on my family trip to San Francisco this weekend. I had been enjoying time with my family- staying at the Westin St. Francis- SF Giants game and dining in our suite at the hotel. I was experiencing complete loss of my motor functions and ended up at Sutter Health CPMC Emergency Room. What's interesting is the week started off at world class hotel and ended at a world class medical facility. Once at the Emergency Room, the amazing medical team went into action: within 2 hours they had diagnosed the injury in my brain that was causing the loss of all motor functions and I clearly knew that time was of the essence to save my life. They gave me the solution which was to surgically release fluid from my brain cavity. After surgery, I immediately was awake and alert, and I could already tell that I had 100 % recovery of my motor functions. 48 hours later my amazing experience at CMPC continued. I have a beautiful suite just like at the Westin St. Francis and I have a championship team just like the SF Giants that have been taking care of me meticulously every step of the way. I had many visits here after my failed organ transplant - the people are nice and try but they hospital system and post opp service is one of the most disgusting business practices I have ever seen. I use to be an Insurance Health Broker and thought I saw my fair share of horror stories but this place takes the cake. YOU GET NO HEALTH CARE - you receive health services with the focus first and purely on profit. How long do we put up with a system where we treated like cattle - not to mention we are over charged - this place is horrific and a pure example of how as citizens we are again being not serviced by our government and health agencies. The CPMC Van Ness Campus MRI Center has wonderful Staff. I've had MRI with Contrast done on Sunday April 28th, very grateful to have Karen, Meagan, Elaine, Hannah there to help me in different ways. Karen and Meagan took good care of me in the MRI room, they performed very detailed prep-work. Karen moved me in and out of the scanner very slowly to ensure my comfort and safety. Meagan injected the contrast very slowly, almost painlessly, she also kept me well informed through the intercom with encouraging words as what to expect from beginning until the end of the procedure. Karen and Meagan were so caring and compassionate which made it easier for me to endure the entire procedure without being too dizzy and stressed out. The MRI room was cleaned, waiting area has plenty of space to relax. Parking was terrible, need lots of improvement. But the excellent MRI team covered the flaws. Karen, Meagan, thank you for making this journey a lot more pleasant than I had anticipated. You are awesome! read more

Worst experience ever! SUMMARY: no cold packs, scam/fraud/extortion, still waiting for my medical records two months later! I though Kaiser was bad until I went to the ER here in Feb. 2024. BRING YOUR OWN COLD PACKS: I hobbled in. After I gave my info to the male receptionist, he didn't offer me any cold packs or bandaids. When I asked for cold packs, he said he couldn't only give me one, though I had at least three different areas of my body needed them. After waiting an hour, I asked a female nurse for another cold pack, she immediately gave me one. SCAM/FRAUD/EXTORTION: While I was waiting for a doctor, I thought it was weird that I got a text saying, "You have been unsubscribed from Sutter Health text updates. No more messages will be sent." I was never even asked to subscribe. In early April 2024, it was even weirder that I got a text asking for $1,000+ from a non-Sutter organization. In March, I already paid in full (thousands of dollars) to Sutter Health. It said, "Your provider statement from San Francisco Emergency Medical Associates, Inc (SFEMA) for your visit to CPMC MISSION BERNAL CAMPUS is ready. View & pay your balance for $XXXX via this secure link: https://ppaya.com/XXXXX." I looked at their website, sfemergencymedical.com (now defunct), and called their phone, (415) 467-4880. No one answered. The ppaya.com link asked me to give my birthday before showing me an itemized list of services I received. Fishy! Someone needs to investigate if SFEMA is a legitimate organization and how they got my cell. WON'T GIVE ME MY MEDICAL RECORDS: In early March, I emailed WBMBHIM@sutterhealth.org asking for my medical records and suggested that they fix two bugs below. When I filled their medical request form: online: I filled it twice but I got the attached error at "Birthday" and couldn't click Back and had to start over. PDF: Each time I checked a box, it would delete my "X" in the box before. As of today, I haven't heard from them. FEEDBACK SURVEY: The day of my visit, I got a text saying, "Sutter Health would like you to take a survey about your recent visit." This is for the discharge in the ER, not for the general care I received. In general, the nurses were fine, the doctors AS PER USUAL do ***not*** listen to female patients, etc. I was basically kicked out with the nurse strenuously telling me she did not have the TIME for me to figure out if I needed to stay longer - I needed to make an immediate decision as they were doing a change of shift (the implication being it would be extra work for her if I stayed). I was still obviously sick and pretty delirious but I said "clearly you guys want me gone" and she just said she needed an answer and wouldn't leave without one so I said "I guess I'll go?" and they could not have pushed me out fast enough. I limped out of the ER and was still so sick that my taxi driver didn't even want to take me home. It was so upsetting that I did call to talk to someone about it. Good news y'all - they did an internal review and found out that every thing they did was totally fine! So now you know - make sure you advocate for yourself, because the people who work there hate you and want you gone ASAP (and that attitude comes from company management, who thinks they did a stellar job in this case :)). read more

Honestly, I can't thank the staff at CPMC ER enough for the quality of care that was provided. I went two times in two days for two different causes, and Dr. Kumamoto, and Dr. Wagner, both provided extremely empathetic, and effective care. I know the US healthcare system is f'd and I was afraid to even go in because I am afraid to look at the bill, but between them and the several nurses whose names I wish I could remember, who came in just to talk to me because it was so clear my mental state was so bad, I know that no matter how much I am going to hate this bill, I got really good care. Especially being a knee dislocation amongst people having deep, deep, emergencies, I didn't feel any less important or cared for, just at the right spot in the queue. Dr. Kumamoto even recognized that I have an anxious personality type, and gently let me know that my anxiety was only making me feel worse in that situation. And Dr. Wagner sat down to counsel me through resources I might need, and how I might feel, and what I might go through after discharge. Again, I wish I could remember the nurses' names because too often they are under appreciated, but I actually ended up having the same one two days in a row, and she was especially great. Also the one that doesn't drink and talked about family history with me, stick out as particular highlights of the experience. I wouldn't wish going to the ER on anyone, especially for what I was going through, but I was glad I was able to go here and receive care. read more

I gave birth here in 2019 and recently changed my current pregnancy care to Alta Bates in Berkeley due to the terrible service. All the good OBs have left the practice within a year of the hospital opening and it has been riddled with poor business management. Also, the hospital itself is located in the middle of SF - inconvenient and a literal shithole near Hayes Valley and infamous Tenderloin. When I gave birth here in 2019, the hospital had just opened and was disorganized and the supply for the post partum area wasn't stocked regularly (broth, crackers, etc.). There were several rude nurses including one who would turn on all the lights in the middle of the night and announce herself loudly for vitals (remember mamas you can request another nurse - don't put up with any silly bs). The older OBs do not hesitate to schedule c-sections while the younger ones who have left are all for natural birth, ECV success for breech babies and waiting it out even if it takes days. I had to be vigilant and and advocate for myself to have the birth I wanted - natural with an epidural! Also, they do not encourage breastfeeding here. My husband caught the NICU nurse (white, middle aged, overweight) force feeding our newborn when we specifically wrote on the board to pace feed and that we were breastfeeding. Super disappointing how we felt sabotaged! Other than that, the young Asian female NICU staff and docs were great for the short time we were there. When I was readmitted a few days later without the baby, the hospital refused to help refrigerate pumped breastmilk bc my baby was no longer a patient. The management eventually relented after some argument (but I had to walk back and forth post partum to a different floor to use the NICU fridge). At a minimum, the hospital should have basic fridges in for post partum pumping moms! Most recently, for this 2021 pregnancy, the sad office staff (reminds me of the DMV) never scheduled an appointment for an OBGYN doctor during my whole pregnancy (so far 30 weeks!). They scheduled me with random midwives despite my "high risk" pregnancy and referring me to maternal fetal medicine, scheduling monthly ultrasounds, etc. The maternal fetal nurses and staff are the worst - they wanted to have me come in for a blood pressure reading instead of doing a virtual appointment even though I was there in the office for an OBGYN midwife visit the week before and there was an in person reading in my chart. The nurse just kept demanding a blood pressure log to check boxes even though I told her every reading was within specific ranges. The service here is terrible and the OBGYN and maternal fetal medicine practices are so disjointed even though they exist on the same floor next to each other. They don't read each other's charts and there's a lot of self management that they put on a pregnant mom. Service sucks and take your insurance benefits elsewhere (UCSF Mission Bay or Alta Bates!). Steer clear of the brainless office staff and disjointed medical practice here. And terrible hospital service in the middle of the drug and homeless capital in this pandemic. Gross. read more

I had to go to CPMC emergency room four times in a nine day period because of complications of my condition. Initially, since I was referred by my Nephrologist, I was taken in immediately, and they treated my condition. But even the times I had to return, there was little time in the lobby area. I got the opportunity to explain why I was back and what I needed. Yes, once I got "inside," I would be waiting in different areas between processes because they needed test results, a scan, a room with an available nurse, etc. But I felt better that things were happening and my medical condition was being addressed. Most of the nurses were great. In fact, one of them, Kevin, recommended additional treatment (after consulting with the doctor) that ended up being very helpful. This added procedure was not fun, and it meant an additional 3 hours of more work by Kevin on a busy night. Thank you Kevin for thinking about my health over the additional work you would have to do that night. I ended up having surgery and a hospital stay at CPMC nine days later which also impressed me but that deserves a separate review. read more

This review is for the Emergency Department. Yes, it's true, you could be waiting a long time to see a doc. Unfortunately I had the bad luck of arriving at the same time as several ambulances carrying car crash victims. Naturally they were first priority and the rest of us had to wait a long time. That's just how triage works. I get that, so I'm not going to complain about the 4 hour wait under the circumstances. Now for the good: I was not expecting much but was really surprised at the very good ER doc and nursing staff. Despite the busy and stressful situations they were dealing with that night, I felt like everyone who saw me took the time to listen and were not rushed at all. While my problem was not life threatening, I did need an urgent MRI. I thought I'd have to wait until the next regular business day to do that, but they literally got an MRI tech out of bed to come in at 2:00am to do the imaging. Then they managed to find an off-site radiologist to review the MRI and give a report in only 45 minutes. Really impressed that they made than happen in the middle of the night. Luckily my issue was not as bad as feared and I was able to go home after 9+ hours feeling confident that I got good treatment. In particular Dr. Matthew Tafoya and RN Ben Wilkens were outstanding. read more

I went to the Emergency Department at CPMC on Van Ness around midnight on a Saturday. I was impressed by the professionalism displayed by all the staff there. The facility seemed first rate too. My injury was by no means serious yet I didn't feel comfortable not getting checked out. The staff was really understanding and helpful. After receiving a tetanus shot, I got comfortable that I had done the right thing. It's good to know there's a facility like this close to where I live. read more

Just a few weeks ago my family had an emergency and we had to rush a family member (let's call her B) to CPMC Van Ness campus' emergency center for evaluation and/or possible treatments. This was on a Sunday at 9:30 pm so not a time when the place is fully staffed. When we got to the hospital emergency entrance, this is when the "situation" began. There was already an elderly couple in front of us being checked over by the security guard. The two passed through the security arch and it rang for each of them. Then the guard used a handheld wand to check each body. Once done, the guard had to take down info & then give a visitor sticker to the companion accompanying the potential patient. In the midst of processing this couple, a homeless man wandered into the building, bypassed the security station and walked in through the exit aisle to the clerks inside the emergency reception area. When the guard noticed that the homeless man had snuck in he abandoned the couple he was processing and went to try to corral the homeless guy waving him to leave the building. While this was happening, two other men hoping to get emergency treatment got in line behind my party. While I conveyed the needed info to the guard and shooed my family members into the emergency reception area, in my head I was feeling really upset for the length of time to get into reception and checked in. This is an emergency center. Why was there only one guard at the entrance? B was experiencing chest pains; could have been having a heart attack; and we were left standing watching the security guard lose it dealing with a homeless man. This was a low point. We waited quite a while before B went in to various stations to get examined (heart monitor test, blood pressure reading, weight taken, etc). Each of these tests were administered from a different alcove. The fact that the patient had to move from station to station when they're feeling bad seems insensitive although it probably is efficient flow-wise. Inside an emergency exam room finally! The nurse assigned to our room who had to make sure the monitoring equipment was set up right, get an IV into the patient and answer questions from B was stellar. The nurse, an older man in his 50s, was funny, informative, sensitive to B's fear and extremely helpful. He was the star of the evening. We were in that room an incredibly long time. A doctor came in, asked questions, reviewed the test results and then said B had to stay overnight for observation. But they couldn't find an open room to move her to. At this point it was 3am and still no room. We were told B would be in the emergency exam room until a patient room opened up. As there was nothing we could do at this point, B suggested we each (2 of us companions) go home and come back at a reasonable hour of the morning. She was going to nap. We don't live far from the VN campus so it was easy to return. I entered the hospital through the main entrance on Geary and went to the info desk to get documented, receive a visitor sticker, and given info to B's whereabouts. These info people were efficient! I even recognized the woman helping me from when I had previously visited someone at the Pacific Campus. She was very, very nice. I have to say what a big difference here at VN compared to Pacific campus. The corridors of the hospital are wide and spacious. Free of medical equipment, stretchers or wheelchairs! There was art on the walls and floral arrangements which made the place pretty and calm. The room where B was was easy to find. It was very modern and bigger than Pacific campus' rooms. Almost like a superior hotel room. B told me when I arrived that a troop of doctors and already come & gone discussing B's condition with my sister who had arrived earlier but had to leave for work. She was to be released shortly and allowed to go home. Whew! Nothing serious. In total, B was in the patient room an hour and a half. We left the hospital at 9:30 am Monday morning. As I look back at this experience, I am appalled by how messed up the security station at the emergency entrance was. The emergency room nurse assigned to B was an angel. The hospital's patient rooms are spanking new and very nice. The clean look of the hospital corridors was reassuring. The hospital was calm, secure and seemed efficient. This is what I expect since I'm trusting this institution to care for a family member. I would have given CPMC VN four stars but brought it down to two because of the arrival situation we had to endure. More security guards at the emergency entrance are needed. And there has to be a better way to get people in quickly for help. It's all up to you CPMC to figure it out. read more

Came here earlier this year to get stitches from a su!c!de attempt and the nurses were attentive and kind. The hospital itself is clean and spacious, and check in wasn't too difficult. Once checked in I was seen by a nurse and properly bandaged until I was able to be seen by a doctor. The doctor was incredibly sweet, and patient with me, and the male nurse who came to numb me before stitches was incredibly kind. I kept apologizing for taking their time for such a "minor" incident but the nurse and doctor kept ensuring me that I did the right thing by coming in, as this was an emergency and to never feel bad for getting mental health help. Truly appreciated them for being so kind. The security guards who were watching over me were also kind. I only gave 4 stars as when I was evaluated by the Psych team they said I was fine to leave, however both the doctor and nurse insisted I should stay over the weekend. They argued a bit but Psych gets final say. Aside from that, good place! Overall good experience! read more

I had the most upsetting interaction with the Emergency Room Physician than I've experienced in my life. The doctor, Kenneth S kumamoto, MD was rude, lied in his notes regarding my visit, and mistreated me. Although I arrived at 7:05 AM to the ER, this doctor did not enter my room for at least 90 minutes (There was no one in the ER waiting room when I arrived). Further, he lied and forged my name on a form, stated that he examined me (he never came near me), and belittled me for going to the Emergency Room. He also lied about other comments he claimed I made. I went to the ER on the advice of my Primary Doctor who felt that I should be admitted. Finally, while I arrived at was admitted in to a room at 7:26 AM, I wasn't discharged until after 12 noon. I was never offered food or water. My advice: If Dr. Kumamoto is the only ER doctor present, avoid the CPMC Emergency Department at all costs. I recommend going to an urgent care center if you aren't in serious condition. read more

The nurses where nice to my wife while she needed care. And she felt safe and well taken care of. But the ER staff are overworked and working at a high volume patient to nurse ratio. They dont have enough beds. So be prepared to wait in the ER for days. The nurses in the er need help. Hire some techs or more nurses. Dont forget the wait. 3 to 4 hrs wait in er and days before being brought upstairs. read more

I had to come here for some labs, and I was very pleased at my experience. Like any big complex, I had to find my way around, but people were very nice and helpful. The wait was very short, despite the fact that I had been sent here (along with I am sure many other patients) due to issues at another campus, so they were likely a little overloaded. Everything was clean; the staff was friendly and knowledgeable, the process was minimal. This was also during the covid-19 epidemic, and they were screening anyone who came through the door to try and keep the facility uncontaminated, which while not perfect was a good gesture for sure. I would happily come back here again in the future for other procedures based on the quality of service I received. read more

This hospital opened in March. A loved one was able to use this facility after a massive stroke, you know, the kind that causes paralysis, takes away your ability to breathe, eat, talk, and drink. The paramedics were amazing when they rushed our loved one to the hospital. From what my cousin told me, the paramedics were yelling at one another to drive faster and faster. Every minute counts when you have a stroke. Our loved one's nurse, Richard, was pretty amazing. The ICU only allow two visitors in the room at a time, but he was ok with my large family overcrowding the room and having a flood of visitors come in and out during the the day. He was also open to our questions and didn't seem annoyed. This place also provides translation services during family meetings. You just have to request it ahead of time. They also have a social worker come in to help with the transition process, such as deciding to pull the plug or having the individual stay at a nursing facility. This place is ocd clean and smells fresh without the chemical smells from Clorox. It's so clean that I would have no problem sleeping on the floor. Most hospitals give me the feeling of wanting to flee because they feel icky. I assure you that this place would give you the feeling of staying for hours. It literally feels like I was at a 5 star hotel. I highly recommend this facility. read more

Terrible nurses who don't care about the patients AT ALL and terrible Dr.s for the most part as well. They treat you like objects and try to get you out of the hospital as soon as possible even if the cost is damaging you for life or death. I gave birth here on January 11th. I was always told that L&D nurses really care about patients and are kind, guess what? My nurse did not advocate for me at all but also helped the OB move forward with a procedure that I didn't say "yes" to and was clearly uncomfortable with. The OB didn't ask for consent and used my fear to do what she wanted to do while there was a c-section option that was a lot less harmful to my body. I left with lifelong damage and a newborn to care for. Find a different hospital, people here are careless. Also in case you are looking at hospital's c-section rates, yes, it's lower here and they proudly advertise it but it means pushing instrumental delivery when labor gets complicated which causes so much harm to mothers and sometimes babies that can't be reversed. Low c-section rates can mean more harm sometimes. Be aware. * Thanks for the comment Laura. I can't reply to your comment so adding my response here. Medical mistakes can not be fixed by me complaining to the hospital. Your system, nurses and negligent OBs took my health away and destroyed our life. read more

Dr Meg Faughnan is the WORST pediatrician I have ever met. Within 5 minutes of meeting me, she told me this about my 10 year old son, "We're having a hard time justifying him staying for another night. The insurance won't pay for it." My son has been sick with a horrible stomach flu for 2 weeks and has been in and out of the hospital for the past week. This dr has NO bedside manner or compassion. I don't feel comfortable with my son under her care and don't recommend her at all. She added more stress to everything else we're going through. I will be lodging a formal complaint against her. I do have to mention that Dr Lilly Bellman in their ER is amazing and you are in good hands with her. I would trust her with my life. Also, every single nurse we've work with has been top notch. They had/have to deal with a lot with us and they provided and are currently providing us with excellent care. Laurel, Margaret, Marissa, Heather, Lily, Anessa, Julie and Ivonne were all amazing! Thank you so much for your care. The nurses there are excellent. Also, the childlife specialist Astrid and Evelyn were wonderful. They brought peace to my anxious son. The childlife specialist in the ER on Thursday night, March 11th was also amazing. She was so compassionate and thoughtful. The service from everyone we met was 10 stars with the EXCEPTION of Dr Meg Faughnan. If you continue to have this kind of pediatrician running your hospital, your trust in the public with parents will continue to fall and parents will eventually stop bringing their children here for care. read more

I'm guessing everybody in there had a problem with their vagus nerve due to the Covid shot because everybody had heart problems and I begged for Benadryl and they finally gave it to me after four hours and then I had to beg for the second pill these people do not know what they're doing OK they might be able to put a Band-Aid on your thing, but they cannot help people in Covid. Let's just get that clear because it took us eight hours to convince this guy to get me a prescription for Lorida dine, and my doctor had to get the prescription for the Lyrica because just like another guy there I was couldn't even walk and they wanted to say it was anxiety. Well it's not. It's not anxiety it's the vagus nerve and it controls whether you can speak or walk. I suggest you educate yourself because these doctors are not educated and it is sad sad state when I have a megaphone lady in my ear when I arrive to the hospital telling me to calm down. 5 Stars for the technician that did the echocardiogram today. So pleasant and professional. The 3-star rating is for a few things that weren't so great. We went to the next available person who checks people in on the 4th floor this morning. (Another family was being checked in by the only other person who was working there--at another window.) We were the only ones in line. We waited a bit because she was texting on her phone and wasn't about to look up--no "hello", no "I'll be right with you" etc. When she did call us up she started with, "I can't hear you--you're going to have to wait until the other people stop talking." (She meant the people that were checking in at the other window.) Wow--just like that--that's how things began this morning. And, she meant it. More training needed?? Ya think?? It's bad enough with the stress that you're already under knowing that a loved one has to have tests. There shouldn't be any additional stress. When we did finally leave the hospital around 12:30pm--she was gone.(probably already at lunch while the other person was still checking people in.) The other reason for three stars is the confusion that so many people have regarding 1101 Van Ness and 1100 Van Ness. It is not uncommon for people to show up at the wrong building resulting in missed or late appointments. 1101 is the hospital and 1100 is the medical office building that is literally across the street. Most people get confused--especially the first time you are there. It could easily be fixed if they add the word "hospital" or the words "medical office building" when appointments are made. For example, "Your appointment is at 1101 Van Ness--the hospital." Or, "Your appointment is at 1100 Van Ness--the medical office building." The hospital parking garage is on Post (one way) between Franklin and Van Ness and there is also an entrance on Geary (one way -the other way) between Franklin and Van Ness. The medical office building has a garage on a tiny street called Cedar. It's in between Polk and Van Ness. Hope this helps. read more

This review is more for a nurse and labor and delivery. I think her name was Shelby. She was very loud, obxious, and unprofessional. It seemed that she thrived on giving orders to her patients and pushing what she thought was right for them. Very combative. I felt tense when I was there trying to deliver a baby. My intention was to have a calm peaceful birth however, this nurse talked loudly and in the middle of my drawing blood had a full on conversation with her coworker while poking me everywhere not focused on drawing the blood. In the middle of a c section you could her speaking loudly with her coworkers and at chance she would remember to ask hey are u ok? Hopefully u won't have to experience this. She was also very rough in all the things she tried to do physically my body while I was pregnant and laboring. Hopefully you will luck out and not get her. read more

My daughter delivered on Monday and I can't say enough good things about her treatment! Labor nurse Shonda was the best and worked well with Claire, Peggy and many others. My daughter was watched like a hawk from monitors in and out of our room. Once the baby was delivered, he was also treated with excellent care. The staff were kind and respectful to me and other family members. Overall, it's been an excellent experience. Update: my daughter said I starred too soon. The baby's discharge papers were NOT sent to his pediatrician for his first appointment one week after birth. My daughter's post op appointment is over a month away when it should have been two weeks. My daughter needed to change her appointment with the lactation specialist and was hassled over the phone, asked "What's the problem?" and then told she would be charged if she missed the Zoom appointment. I was first diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in Feb 2018 and have ever since been playing musical "hospital-beds" with all 4 major hospitals in the Bay Area. Here's my personal ranking (in descending order) based on the doctors' credentials and experiences, their bedside manners, their consoling rather than intimidating attitudes, their sense of humor if any, the display of empathy, compassion and concern from all other medical staff, the thoroughness of the admitting nurse and triage in going over my meds and medical records and most importantly, my own "at ease" feeling with the hospital's ambiance and personal comfort level. The California Pacific Medical Center Van Ness (CPMC) came up tops. A spanking new and spotlessly clean state-of-the-art hospital opened last year. There were no exceptions. A mandatory Covid test is required from ALL patients no earlier than 4 days prior to admission or medical procedure. Caregivers, friends and family were strictly prohibited from entry. Occupying an entire city block on Van Ness, it was constructed like an architectural masterpiece, dedicated to the health and well being of all patients. I was fortunate enough to be assigned to Dr. Andrew Nett, a top-notch gastroenterologist/surgeon bar none. Despite his youthful looks, his medical credentials are stellar and he has tons of them. What impressed me most were his national publications/abstracts, research papers and presentations on pancreatic diseases and gallbladder/bile duct diseases. Go see him, God forbid, if you should have these issues and he's is affiliated with CPMC. The anesthelogist, Dr Lawrence, was equally caring and competent and had prior consultations with Dr. Nett as to the level of sedation I needed. A big shout out to both of them! Hip hip hurray! The other hospital was at Stanford and the surgeon was downright intimidating and did not pull any punches in guesstimating my time remaining. Don't you think that's up to God? It was helluva irksome to listen to a doctor talk down on me. I might not be medically trained but certainly no dumbshit either! Next the surgeon in UCSF wanted me to lose 60 lbs in a 3-month period before he considered surgery. Admittedly, I was obese. I didn't even try and gave up! Both Stanford and UCSF are of course well known and state-of-the-art hospitals. I just didn't feel at home like I was in good hands in spite of the reputation of the surgeons. The other medical staff was impersonal and didn't give a damn. The worst had gotta be Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital in my hood, where there was a recent outbreak of Covid when some nurses and care partners were exposed. The Sonoma County Health Dept hauled me in after my hospitalization to be Covid tested (my 8th this year) after 14 days of home quarantining. UGH! read more

I came for myomectomy procedure. In general check in is done in a slow pace. System could've been improved. Slide someone's ID or passport then BAM! Visitor badge printed! Instead, it is handwritten. Move foward.. Check in process #2 Go to 4th floor, fill out your personal info and wait till you get call. Surgery was supposed to be at 1 pm but delayed. My Dr, didn't get notified. Ok, snafu happens, i get operated, out by 4.30 pm. Smooth sailing. Check in process #3 ( post surgery room- out patient- they say) Now, my Doc said, i'm going to check back with you tomorrow, evening probably but then she changed to AM. So I can get discharge soon.. but See how i feel, right? Ok, come 5 pm, we order food, and eat dinner. Come 9.50 pm, Nurse Natalie woke me up for a walk. 6 hrs after procedures. Since 6 pm, We kept asking if we will be move to a room that has bed for my momma to lay rest, but no definite answer from her. During my first walk, another nurse we asked why i'm still here and not discharged after dinner? Maybe my doctor forgot?! I'm like.. what r u talking abt? I'm not going home just because you think I know how to walk a couple step.. and pee?! I'm still in pain and i can't really argue. Nurse Natalie then moved me to another room which the same size & floor, across from Nurses desk. Before she went off shift, she got my mom a recliner. Thank you!! To sleep. She's been with me since 8 am this morning. Meanie Nurse said, they have to move the recliner from my room coz it doesn't belong there. But my mom can sleep on empty room next door, she'll take responsibility.. i'm like.. Seriously who want to do that when she can perfectly sleep w me next to recliner in the same room? Mom felt pressured with her high pitched voice, she was watching her ipad till 12 midnight and sleep occasionally in her tiny lil chair, coz afraid nurse will take away the recliner when she's sleeping. Duh mom?! Nurse came again to wake me up for pee. She finally told my mom recliner can stay. Before she left, she said, this is outpatient area, we generally don't allow overstay. This is midnight and my mom finally gettin ready to sleep. Girl, I don't know your hospital rule.. I requested a room you didn't assign one and even make me feel that i'm a wonder woman and can be discharged after dinner when I'm still clearly could use some tlc and knowledge what to expect after this surgery. I don't come to hospital EVERYDAY so Telling me oh I know how it feels, wont help me at all! She then added, we have 70 patients today, i don't want to sound mean to you, but You're gonna have to get ready and get discharged by 9am. There are other patients that needs this room. And it will cost you more if you're admitted to in patient room, you wouldn't want that, right? Why yes if you put it that way lady. 4am, Nurse Dominique came checked my temp, took my am breakfast order. 7am, Nurse Annie came to remind us breakfast is coming, doc is coming too and I'm getting discharged soon. The whole night, its all about getting discharged it seems. I was so happy to see my Doc, but I forgot what should I do in few days with the wound etc. They call a wheelchair service, a man came to pick up, but dude please don't rush me. Every time you hit that speed bump, I feel the pain and you don't! I thank Dr.Hu & Dr.Zaid, thank you for taking care of me. Nurse Bella, Natalie, Dominique and Annie for being patient. You are wonderful angels that has to put up with us patient . The mean one, I don't remember your name, you're tough cookie and i know you mean well. But in the future, if a mama wants to be with her daughter to watch over her, please be kind and don't stress your patients out. Also I request extra pillows for a reason, but you took it away while i went to bathroom. Wth?! Again, thank you for taking care of me. I appreciate the new facilities and cleanliness, and hope you can continue to show more compassion & encouragement to those who needs it. read more

This is by far the worst hospital I have ever been to. I was taken by ambulance after suffering severe smoke inhalation. The fire in my unit was so bad all of the building's fire doors and fire curtains were activated and my building ordered evacuated. The Red Cross told me it was a 3 alarm multi resident fire. The fire was in MY unit. I foolishly put soup on to eat while I took a quick shower before bed. Once in the shower I got very dizzy and collapsed. Once I collapsed I couldn't get up. My legs were paralyzed. Meanwhile the soup boiled down and started a fire. The alarms were all going off. My fire curtains slammed closed and I could hear the system ordering people to evacuate as there was a fire detected in the building. I screamed for nearly two hours and was about to give up and die when a neighbor let me know the Fire Department was in route. Even after they arrived it took a while for them to break the door down and get me onto a gurney. My legs were paralyzed. Yet after all of this I was NOT treated for the smoke inhalation. I was refused water and they had the MOST hateful nurses I have ever encountered. I was not given oxygen, fluids or ever water though I kept begging for it. People came in and out of my room like I was an inanimate object. At one point a nurse came in and took my only chair. Because she did this when I was told to get dressed I had to sit on the DR's stool and when I tried to stand it shot out and I fell again hard. My head hit a concrete wall with such a loud crack the nurse from the nursing station heard it. She was such a b***h. No empathy at all. I had to wait 3 more hours for a head CT and not once was I shown any kindness or empathy from the nurses. The tech in CT was very kind and explained everything well. I don't know why the nurses are so hateful at this hospital but I will NEVER go there again. To make it all worse my aftercare instructions NEVER mentioned the smoke inhalation. Yes, I had a fall but the smoke inhalation was the worst. I was not treated for it at all. Also I kept asking for food and water. At the point I hadn't eaten for 3 days. Finally after asking 4 times for food and water the nurse came in and tossed a kids prepackaged snack pack on my bed. Juice boxes, graham crackers and cheddar goldfish. None of which I could eat because I am diabetic. I hate, hate, hate. CPMC. How can a person be in a fire and not be treated for smoke inhalation. The fire was so bad the street where I live was blocked off by no less that four rigs. Other tenants were treated for smoke inhalation and I was in the nexus of the whole thing and not even treated at all. No oxygen, fluids, food or water. If I could give no stars I would. read more

Labor and Delivery. Don't recommend. They just do things without explaining or telling what they will do. The rooms are small/ poorly designed. Different levels of birthing and after care... worst of my 3 places I have given birth at. If you have special food restrictions, like vegan, you won't have no good options, porridge only for breakfast, one lunch option and dinner. No snacks or other foods given outside the meal hours. So if you give birth at 9pm, you will not be served until after 7am. read more

Is it unreasonable to think a hospital would have wheelchairs available at their entrance? I was about to give them the benefit of the doubt, maybe it was a busy day. However, when I asked for one because my wife was in active labor and could barely stand, the guy at the front desk literally did nothing for 5 minutes and then decided she didn't need a wheelchair because she could stand. I ended up carrying her to the elevator because the guy preferred to argue with me than do anything helpful. Then we go to triage and the IV nurse stabs my wife in the arm so hard she screams out in pain. The nurse then literally laughs and says "No, you're not feeling pain, I'm the best nurse in the hospital." Later the anesthesiologist botches the epidural and can't figure out why my wife is still in pain after an hour and a half of her screaming. It felt like I was on a reality tv show where we go to a hospital and get treatment by a bunch of random people they found on the street. read more

No sympathy at all... I was scheduled for an endoscopy this morning unfortunately, I got really sick vomiting diarrhea from the same diagnosis that I'm being referred there for. I called to let them know what had happened and that I couldn't make it because I got really sick and instead of having sympathy and offering me the next appointment the receptionist said she was told by the manager to schedule me no sooner than end of August early September just because I got sick and couldn't make it, in a way punishing me when I was already crying and said I was so sorry for missing my appointment. Some of the worst incompetence and negligence I have ever had witness and firsthand experience with as a patient advocate and visitor of a family member here, who was hospitalized and had surgery at this wretched place. During her stay, she was given an antibiotic she is allergic to, even after reporting her allergies. As a result, had severe edema all over her body, yeast infections (thrush), and c-diff infection, severe diarrhea, vomiting, gained 15 lbs in fluid retention, and the list goes on. The doctors (especially Daniels) and nurse practitioner Kozak were extremely uncompassionate. They ignored their own incompetence, and blamed everything on her and the pain medication she needed to get her through this. They refused to own up to their mistakes even though they knew of her health problems going into this procedure (she's immunocompromised, as well as a host of other problems). They should be sued for malpractice. One nurse (Flo) actually yelled at her for asking for help to get to the bathroom! To add insult to injury, another took advantage of her situation and actually stole from the belongings of her purse. Also, I'd like to mention the ridiculous expense of parking just to visit a patient makes it extremely onerous to advocate on their part. It's like they intentionally set it up so that visitors can't witness the heinous practices going on here. The doctors wait until a visitor leaves before they come in to visit the patient. They don't want to have to answer to anyone. This hospital needs to be sued for gross negligence in keeping such inept employees on staff. UPDATE: The patient died two months after being released from this hell they call a hospital. She would have written this review herself, but was unable to, but I dictated it on her behalf with her consent. As a witness to her suffering, I blame the staff for making her life absolutely miserable in the last few months of her life. read more

I had a major operation here and the aftercare was top notch. I was hospitalized for two nights after my surgery. It was really hard on me. I woke up with sharp pain in my sides and inability to breathe. The nurses helped me find a position where the pain wasn't as bad. They stayed with me when I asked. They walked me when I felt up to it and built up my confidence when I felt low, when I felt afraid. In short, these wonderful nurses helped me in the first few days where it's truly the hardest. My room was on the same floor as the pediatric ward and had sea life decor. I will never forget how much my aftercare team helped me, restored my confidence and stayed with me in the hardest, most traumatic surgery of my entire life. It's been two weeks since my surgery and I feel well on the road to recovery. I'm so grateful for my care team and I wish them the best. read more

CPMC Van Ness Campus - A hospitalized patient post surgery at CPMC Van Ness - Hospitals Near Me - San Francisco, California

I've been an inpatient and outpatient at CPMC for a wide range of care over the past 30 years and except for the hand therapy clinic, the majority of doctors and care I have received there have been substandard and some absolutely horrendous. While the details of each surgery. inpatient stay or service are important, there is not one doctor or department that I would ever see again or responsibly recommend. But beyond that, the most disturbing aspect of the institution is the predatory nature of their terms and conditions required for admission to any treatment and care. These practices extend to staff who attempt to get patients once admitted to sign forms that unwittingly transfer financial burdens to them for services they correctly believed to be the formal responsibility of the institutions providing their care. One example of a predatory term is a section which states that you agree that you will see doctors that are not affiliated with CPMC, do not accept your insurance and will be billing you separately and further that it is your responsibility to investigate and confirm independently whether or not a doctor does or does not accept your insurance. Once admitted, staff may try to get you to sign a form that says if your length of stay extends beyond the average number of inpatient days that your insurance typically reimburses for your diagnosis or procedure, you will pay for those days. This is because they don't want to have to do any work in documenting/demonstrating medical necessity in the event any days of your stay are denied by your insurance. In both these cases, patients are being coerced into assuming costs for services and care that without such waivers would be illegal and which is otherwise known as balanced billing. That is when a provider accepts your insurance but then attempts to bill you the difference between what the insurance paid them and what they would have charged you if you were an uninsured self-paying patient. When I was admitted to CPMC Acute rehab in 2020, I crossed out the section on seeing doctors who didn't take my Medicare, but I still got a doctors bill for over $10k upon discharge. Had I not crossed this section out, I would have been responsible for it. The Case Manager and Physical Therapist kept trying to get me to sign a form saying if my stay extended beyond 10 days I would be responsible for the subsequent daily hospital fees. I refused and luckily, my doctor walked in on one of these discussions and told them a longer stay was medically necessary and that should just document that, read more
