She was patient and addressed all of the questions that I had. More importantly, she didn't skim on making sure that I knew how to apply what she had taught me -- she made sure I tried my own hand several times and went over whatever I struggled on. Only hindrance was the locale in which the lesson took place, which was relatively hot -- and may affect one's ability to focus for an extended time.

I was late for the test and she made me apologize to everybody in the class, which threw me out!!! It was my fault that I was late but she officially made me feel embarrassed by forcing me to say sorry to the whole class!!!! It was horrible!! :( But I wanted to learn French so I said sorry to the class and took the test, which I regret doing it.... HOWEVER after I finished the test, she even approached me saying that she was angry at me because I was late for the class!!!! Mariam was really rude and I found she is not professional as a teacher so I quit the school! There are better other french schools out there!

The cost of…read moretuition really cannot be beat: as a Canadian citizen, the cost of the program is $55 for the first level you take (2 months), $10 for the second, then it alternates $55/$10 for further levels. My binder full of printed exercises basically accounts for my entire tuition fee. Because the Centre Saint Louis is a government sponsored program, they can't advertise in English and rarely show up on search engines. Basically everyone in my class heard about the program through word of mouth. We're all really happy we found it. If more people knew about the program I'm convinced most language schools would be out of business because the QUALITY and affordability of this program is awesome. The staff are super friendly and they truly care about the students. I have no doubt I will be bilingual after completing all the levels (takes about a year). We even have a social worker to help with any aspect of Montreal life. Go here! You won't regret it.

Are the pipes, the pipes a'callin' you, o Danny Boy?…read more I don't need to sell you on playing the bagpipes (or the drums, if that's your fancy), because they're just undeniably awesome. No question. And when you realize that fact and find you can't live without knowing how to play the bagpipes, MPDS is the place to learn. When I moved to our fair city, I wasn't sure that Montreal would be a good city to get back into playing the bagpipes again after a long hiatus, because it didn't seem like the most bagpiperly place. But that shows how much I knew moving here. I was delighted to find that there's a whole Montreal Piping and Drumming School, for anyone who wants to learn. They meet at the Shriners Karnak hall in DDO, right off the highway, and they've got groups at all levels to teach you how to play the Scottish Highland bagpipes, even if you're starting from zero musical background. The school is really tight-knit and makes a great little community, and the instructors and students at MPDS help you get to know the greater bagpiping world in Montreal (which is surprisingly enormous). Lessons run in the fall and the spring, and there's a free weekly meetup all through the summer for former students. But I guess, bottom line, you totally want to learn to play the bagpipes.

And now for something completely different…read more.. I had a good friend visiting from out of town who has always been a bit of a daredevil. Recently she's gotten into trapeze lessons. Apparently us Montrealers don't know how lucky we are to have three trapeze schools in one city. In Calgary, where she lives, there is only one and its seasonal. So upon her insistence we signed up for a 2 hour afternoon lesson at Chateau du Cirque. It's in an old movie theatre on St Denis near the Jean Talon market. The people were super friendly and welcoming and the instructors were very patient. Our class was a mix of newbies and more experienced people. The class felt very safe as you were always connected to a safety line. By the end of a two hour class I was able to complete a basic trick of hanging by my knees from the bar and catching the wrists of the catcher on another bar. This is a really fun and non intimidating place to try out a circus class, I definitely recommend it for a unique outing with family or friends. Just FYI two days after the class my shoulders are killing me... but totally worth it.

So here's the thing: I'm afraid of heights. I'm not talking regular afraid of heights- I'm talking…read moremy knees give out while I'm in line for roller coasters and I occasionally I may go blind if my heart begins to race too quickly. That being said, it was a hell of a Saturday fun-tivity for me to attend my friend's flying trapeze class birthday party (it's good to challenge yourself, no?). First of all, the space is really interesting; appended to a large gospel church, the hall offers a large trapeze area and ample space for all other circus practices, as well as a large bleacher/seating area. Throughout our visit they had chill beats going with a giant projector screening old Cirque du Soleil videos. Imma just say it- I felt really cool being there. Speaking to the price, you really get what you pay for here. For two hours it's $300 which isn't half bad because you can really bring a sizeable group, making it quite affordable. The one suggestion I would have however is perhaps if they had a staff member who took photos during the party- it's pretty impressive stuff for the average person so I feel like they would up their marketing game with more in-house done photos. The first hour of the class was main-à-main activities (basic circus mounts) which I LOVED. Everything was explained well and the instructors assisted us all individually in getting the mounts right. In this spirit, I have to say the staff is fantastic. If I counted correctly we had at least five different staff members who were available for us during the two-hour period, all to ourselves. All of them were bilingual and incredibly talented, friendly and helpful. With this, after I finally got the gumption to climb the tall tall ladder up to the trapeze platform I had two very sweet circus performers to talk me down from a doozie of a panic attack. As luck would have it, I did manage to jump off the platform and successfully trapezed (high up in the air, I am proud to say!). I didn't muster the courage to go up again, but there's always next time!
