This home is where the nine students were picked up and dropped off each school day, while being transported by U.S. troops during segregation in Little Rock, Arkansas. The bullet holes are visible in the window pane where shots were fired into her home by prejudice people who defied desegregation. I can only imagine the disturbance that Daisy Bates endured. She also experienced an arson attack in her front lawn.

The L.C. and Daisy Bates House Museum is a wonderful experience. It is a great display of a period…read morein time that demonstrates the complexities of the segregated south of the 1950's. The authentic story telling from the guided tour makes the experience even better. The tour ends with a story of hope for the future. Well worth young people and old to have.

I am so glad that I did. This was my first time experiencing Board and Brush as I am more of a Painting With a Twist, chick; however, I loved the banging, staining and painting that went into the creation of my new board. Now, I want to stain EVERYTHING! LOL I am thankful that the owner easily accommodated my last minute addition. The layout of the space was pretty good though I wish my table had been pushed a little more away from the wall because the employees had to access things behind me a lot during the session and that was a little uncomfortable. It was also difficult to hear instructions sometimes and I think might have been helpful for the staff to have whistles to get everyone's attention for important things. Our group was highly verbal (smile). One additional thing that would have been nice is if we'd had the ability to adjust the design a little bit. I did not know that the corporate trademark designs were so very rigid that we couldn't do something simple like add a hook to the front of the board to accommodate the calendar I am going to hang from my board. Corporate really should give sites that bit of flexibility but it's cool because I'm going to install one myself as soon I get home. Overall, I had a great time with my friend and made a few new friends along the way. Great way to spend a Saturday!

The Scott Plantation Settlement depicts what early farming life was like when Arkansas was still a territory and prior to the introduction of mechanization. There are structures include a hand-hewn cypress corncrib, 1840s dog trot log cabin, Big House from one of the nearby plantations; commissary, one-room schools, doctor's office, tenant homes, and blacksmith shop. The Civil War interpretative sign describes the Battle of Ashley's Mill, which was part of Union General Frederick Steele's 1863 Little Rock Campaign, which resulted in the fall of Little Rock in 1863. I heard that the Little Rock High museum was a must see while there so I decided to check it out…read more The museum/visitor center is about a block away from Little Rock High, so it literally took a couple minutes to walk there. I'm not sure if they have a parking lot since u walked there, but it seems like they have plenty of street parking since I saw a lot of people parking on various sides of the museum. The museum itself was really interesting and even though it was small it was very informative and provided ample methods of learning the information, including videos, audio, timelines, and other information.

Visiting the Little Rock Central High National Historic Site was a must for me as I feel it's…read moreimportant to bear witness to history. In 1957, nine Black students integrated Central High. This integration was considered a test of Brown v. Board of Education that found that "separate but equal" was unconstitutional. The National Historic Site consists of the Visitor Center/Museum, Little Rock Central High School (which is still an operating school), the Commemorative Garden, the Magnolia Mobil Station (which served as an impromptu press base), and the Elizabeth Eckford Bus Bench. It is managed by the National Park Service. Admission is free and they allow photos. The museum is small and does not take very long to walk through, though it will take some time if you read all of the panels and watch the videos. They offer guided tours on certain days. If you're doing a self-guided tour, you cannot enter the school. Central High School is very beautiful. The architecture is a blend of Art Deco and Gothic Revival. Climbing the stairs was an extremely heavy feeling that I wasn't prepared for. As I ascended the stairs, I imagined what it would have felt like to walk through angry mobs just to go to school. It was honestly overwhelming and I don't know if I would have been able to endure such hatred and discrimination. I'm grateful to the Little Rock Nine for their courage, perseverance, and resiliance.
