Keeping it in the Greek family…read more This classic inner Adelaide suburban corner shop used to house George and his family serving up deli items when every suburb had a reliable deli for the last minute, need it right now milk, ice cream or bread before we had supermarkets open to 9.00pm (yes this is awhile ago). Back then Parkside was a bit dingy, a bit boho and very multicultural - Greek and Italian families predominated. Fast forward 25 years and Parkside has now been gentrified and and is a bit yuppiefied but blessedly Duthy St deli harks back to its deli origins and not just in name only. Vasili our host, has been smoothly operating a very successful cafe here for a number of years. Good service, well trained baristas, efficient chefing on view and a consistent, reliable extremely well presented selection of breakfast and lunch cold and hot items. Shrewdly but thankfully very competitively priced in a locale that could cough up more. Always good and always fresh -congratulations on maintaining the tradition in a slice of slightly out of the way suburbia. PS I do miss the Haigh's dark chocolate buttons though that used to accompany the coffee (I'd be prepared to pay a little more to have the chance to drop one in to create a gooey chocolaty melting moment on top of my latte/cappuccino froth). Especially got a laugh from the visible work 'notice board' reminding wait staff to generally stop being idiots and stay off their phones during service piled amongst other threats. Does explain the faultless service on their part. Food is pricey but utterly amazing, the space is huge and the service is awesome so ruling with an iron fist must be working for them! Coffee was made by who I assume was the owner as he exuded the kind of confidence with a coffee machine only decades could foster. I was only there for few minutes as I was on my way to meet a friend, but I found the service to be prompt and very friendly, it was easy to have a casual chat with everyone there (including the workmen - although I suspect they're not permanent fixtures). The to chocolate was delicious and was just what I needed on that cold afternoon.

Maybe it's because I've been wandering the city for hours on a starving belly. Maybe it's because I've gone off sugar, and they dumped a load of sugar into this bad boy. I don't know. But I DO know that the pasty tasted amazing. I'm salivating at the memory and am considering another purchase. The inside is nice and well-lit, with - true to the 'green' coloured theme of the place - energy saving light bulbs. The staff is nice. The prices are mercifully cheap. And the only mess I saw in the place was that one engendered by me as I ate my pasty, as neatly as a three year old might. But I make no illusions; the five stars is all in the taste of the pasty.

We all ordered at the counter and the price is reasonable and about what you would expect for an Italian Cafe in Adelaide. I have coeliac disease and the staff were very understanding and made sure I had a gluten free meal. Another diner had gluten and lactose sensitivity and she was also catered for well. The food came out pretty quickly and was delicious, I didn't hear one complaint from over 20 people! My only criticism would be that they took our names in order to identify each dish and that they didn't use that system to give out the food. Consequently there was a little confusion, it was a minor issue. The food did also not come out in the order that it was ordered even when two or three people had ordered the same thing. These are minor criticisms though as we all had a good night!

I'm not sure who their supplier of beans is (though I did see Lavazza stamped on one of those vertical PVC pipe grinds bins), but whoever it is should go in guerrilla style and ask them to make a Latte. The first time I tried one I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt; just a bad day, maybe. The second time we went, it was equally as bad - not only was it scalding hot, but it tastes like the beans themselves are burnt. Third time I thought "OK, make or break time" and if nothing else I must applaud them for consistency. I'd rather drink instant, and that's saying something. This is seriously up there with the worst coffee I have ever tasted. Three times. There were 5 of us and each square table only fits 4 comfortably. A carpark is available and just as well as most on road parks in the side road were taken due to the number of businesses in the street. Upon trying to enter the store the sliding doors from the carpark weren't opening and had to take a side door entrance after a friends gestures I could see through the glass. They didn't have a sign on the doors and other friends that arrived had to walk around to the front entrance as we didn't see them to let them know. The store has lots of produce from cheeses, hams, pizza, salads, hot delicacies, gelati and cakes. The salad choice is amazing and all looked scrumptious although I thought the pricing is a bit steep. Then again, there was freshly roasted pork with crackling that was a bargain, so the prices are a real mix. My coffee came with a lovely St Pat's shamrock pattern and the $3 coffee was decent too. I purchased a triangular savoury (more suited to lunch than breakfast). Even though it doesn't come with Napolitana sauce the lady offered a bit on the side to try. My savoury was delivered warm and the sauce (a little runny but tasty) in a little jug so I could pour myself. The savoury triangle was a mix of spaghetti in a creamy sauce and covered in crumbs. It was big and a bargain at $3.50. My only disappointment was that they don't do breakfast (yet). Staff were very pleasant. I'll be back once the breakfast menu is up and running.
