It's not an easy marker to get close to, or even read. One has to pull in at the adjacent parking lot to get a good look. The State Highway Marker was erected and dedicated in late 2019 by the Virginia Beach Historic Preservation Commission. Miles James enlisted on October 28, 1863 in Portsmouth, VA with the rank of Corporal in the 36th Regiment Company B of the United States Colored Infantry. James's regiment saw heavy action at the Virginia Battle of New Market Heights, one of the outer defenses of Richmond. They fought against the Texas Brigade of Gen. Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. During the fighting Corporal James's arm was mangled and had to be field amputated. Regardless of his injury he continued to lead his men. James was promoted to 1st Sergeant and earned the Medal of Honor for his actions in the battle. In addition the Army created a special unofficial medal as a tribute to the gallantry of the African American soldiers who fought with the Union Army in the Battle of New Market Heights. James was born into slavery in Princess Anne County. Following the war he returned to live in Norfolk. The 1870 Norfolk Census shows him living in Ward 3 with his wife Sarah and three children. He was 43 years old and working as a shoemaker. Sadly he died August 28, 1871 of complications from his injury and is buried in the Sgt. March Corprew Family Cemetery. The Cemetery, located in what is now Chesapeake, VA, serves as a memorial for Unknown & Known Afro-Union Civil War Veterans.,

Tucked away by the entrance of Hampton University is this piece of history. Being an alum of an…read moreHBCU, this one is very special to myself. For those who aren't familiar (and I wasn't until recently), this oak tree is where President Abraham Lincoln stood to give the first Southern reading of the Emancipation Proclamation. And this was a place where newly freed slaves were taught at the Butler School which was built right by the oak tree, which was the beginning of Hampton University as we know it. Tip: There is a small parking lot (Lot 2) where you can park near the tree for free. There is a fence that covers the oak, but behind it is an opening where you can take some pictures up and close. Believe me, it's a sight to see.

The Witch of Pungo statue, located at the corner of Independence Boulevard & N Witchduck Road, was…read morea project conceived and fund raised by the late Belinda Nash. An expert on Grace Sherwood, Belinda would dress in costume and present informative historic programs on the only woman condemned as a witch in Virginia and dunked in water. Although Belinda wasn't a native of the area, I came to believe that she felt she was Grace Sherwood reincarnated. It was Belinda's goal to have the vestry of the Lynnhaven Parish Church, that originally condemned Grace, pardon her on the 300th Anniversary of the dunking. When it didn't appear that would happen, she appealed to then Governor Tim Kaine. On July 10, 2006, the 300th Anniversary, Governor Kaine issued an informal pardon of Grace Sherwood, the local legend known as the Witch of Pungo. A plaque on the statue is inscribed with the pardon verbiage. The statue embodies elements that first caught the attention of her suspicious neighbors, including her love of animals. To visit the statue, one must turn off Independence Boulevard onto N Witchduck Road. Then enter the parking lot at Sentara Independence, on whose property the statue is located. Across N Witchduck Road is Old Donation Episcopal, the Lynnhaven Parish Church. On her grounds is a small monument in the midst of an herb garden, in memory of Grace Sherwood. Winding behind the adjacent neighborhood is the Lynnhaven River, in which Grace was dunked but lived to see a longer life. A re-enactment of the dunking happens annually. Following the dunking Grace was imprisoned. Later in life court records prove that she was free. No record can be found as to how she was released. There are missing older court records. The Witch of Pungo Statue stands in a continuing watch over the area in which Grace Sherwood was dunked and imprisoned. She is a tribute to a time that should be remembered throughout the ages.

This is a little hidden gem for beach lovers that have access to military bases. The parking here…read moreis excellent and very close to the beach. You can virtually park right in the sand if you'd like, and walk directly ahead to your spot. The beach is small and quaint and it's also great for families with small children seeing that the beach is very small. During the pandemic the beach was stringed off into sections for families and it was wonderful that it was done so everyone was within a safe distance from each other. The actual beach itself is not very full of waves, and always tends to have a very large sandbar, and a very slow drop off. You can normally walk very far into the ocean and it only be waist deep which I personally really like. The only downside to this beach is that not everyone has access to it. You must have a military issued ID card that the front gate will scan prior to entrance.

I think many people thought the war was over in the 1770s and forget that the United Kingdom tried to recover their colony in what became known as the War of 1812. The marker reads, "In 1634, Capps Point, later known as Little England, was patented by William Capps, a prominent planter who maintained a lucrative saltworks. He served as a burgess in the 1619 General Assembly, the first representative legislative body in the New World. On 25 June 1813, during the War of 1812, British Admiral George Cockburn sailed into the mouth of Hampton River and shelled Hampton. A complement of 450 Virginia militiamen tried in vain to hold the British at bay with several small cannons mounted in the fortification at Little England. Afterward the British occupied and plundered the town." This is marker W-88 and was erected in 1997 by Department of Historic Resources. There is parking nearby though not much else to see here. Make sure to manage your speed and park in designated areas. The beaches never seem to be super crowded. They are generally clean as well. I have noticed boats anchor aching. Not sure how I feel about that, safety wise. There is one area that has lifeguards. The casemate museum is really great. It offers a lot of good education for the area. I highly recommend stopping and spending time inside.
