Double-booking myself is something I've become talented at doing and on this occasion it saw me needing a reliable form of transport from Cleveland to Doomben Racecourse and back again. Jeeves was off on his annual round the world jaunt on this weekend so helicopter transfer was out. Enter Betta. Mark & Nicole run a pretty great local and family business. Having ruled out public transport I found this Cleveland based car hire company and they made the booking process as easy as ABC. Not only did they have a small car available on the dates I needed, it was budget-friendly ($60 and 200kms included) and they collected and dropped me off at the ferry terminal for Stradbroke Island. Talk about service! The car itself was spick, span and safely speedy. Any tolls that you may have driven through are fixed up upon return. Plus, rather than you having to take account of any existing damage to the car they photograph it before you zip away. Suffice to say, these guys will be top of my list next time I'm in need of four wheels in Cleveland.

Given that it's one of the cheapest places for private rooms in Brisbane, it was adequate. The beds are small and look a bit threadbare with tiny, thin pillows. Tight quarters and overall slightly depressing rooms. Bathrooms are shared (though I think there was a next option up with private bathrooms) and nicely clean, with good showers. We never had problems with lines or anything. The breakfast is a fairly basic cereal and toast (with jam/vegemite/peanut butter,etc.) The staff were quite pleasant though seemed rather busy when we were there. They said we could leave stuff there while we were out and about on our checkout day (before catching a train in the afternoon), but it turned out there wasn't any actual locked space to do this in...they just had us leave it in the corner in the dining room...which was fine in the end but certainly made us nervous, and we consequently ended up taking a bit more with us than planned. The location is one of the best features - easy walking distance of the train station (especially once you figure out the closest entrance!) and close to downtown and the river. The house itself is also quite cool, with lots of antiques and knick-knacks. Overall, a perfectly acceptable spot for the price!

Buses are never going to be the cool mode of public transit (despite Brisbane's efforts to get you…read moreto "catch the Buz"), but the system here is quite useful. Substantial bus-only roads and bridges cover routes complementary to the train system, enabling the buses to still be useful during rush hour. The system is quite well integrated with its counterparts, allowing easy access to ferry stops and train stations. I've had mostly good experiences with the drivers. Giant bus depots with many routes coming through make travel much more efficient when changing routes. The buses are quite clean for public transit, and by and large the services are regular and fast enough to be useful. The worst things I've experienced are the occasional overcrowded bus (but nowhere near as often as I'm used to) and the occasional late or missing bus (again, not that often). There's no such thing as 100% reliability, but I feel comfortable making long trips to unknown areas and trusting my Translink app to find me a way back, which I would never have risked where I come from. The protected bus routes are very much oriented around the universities and hospitals, which pushes the clientele even more towards students and hospital workers than one would expect. However, since I happen to be both of those things, I am okay with that.

But when you combine the fun of riding a Segway ,over 20km of one of the most scenic bike trails in the world, and a fantastic tour guide you get one of the best values in the tour business :) kevin was a great guide and instructor on the Segway- he when above and beyond to make sure we had a great time and were safe on the segways. Riding through the zig-zagging wooden bridges overlooking Roma street parklands was an unexpected highlight of the tour! We'll be back with our friends and family soon!

We encountered a clear misapplication of Marriott Bonvoy rules at check-in at Four Points by…read moreSheraton Brisbane. Two spouses were sharing one room. One of us is a Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite member and was staying in the room; the other spouse (Silver) happened to be listed as the lead name on the reservation. The front desk clerk refused to provide Platinum benefits, claiming that elite benefits only apply if the Platinum member is the primary name on the reservation. He insisted it was company policy. That claim is flatly incorrect under Marriott's own published policy. Marriott Bonvoy Terms & Conditions state: "Only one Member per guest room may earn Points, Elite Night Credits, and receive Elite benefits for that room. If more than one Member is staying in the same guest room, the Members must decide at check-in which Member's Membership Number will be applied to the room. Elite benefits apply only to the one guest room in which the Elite Member stays." -- Marriott Bonvoy™ Terms & Conditions, Sections 4.1-4.2 There is no rule requiring the elite member to be the lead name on the reservation. The only requirements are that the elite member is staying in the room and that their Bonvoy number is applied to the folio. I told him it's not Marriott policy. He said "Well it's policy for THIS property." I told him "No it's not. You don't get to invent policies. You have to obey Marriott, not fantasy policies. After escalation, the Platinum number was finally added and breakfast was honored -- confirming that the original refusal was unfounded. This should never have required escalation, policy recitation, or guest intervention. Having lazy employees who don't want to do the work to put in the platinum member's Bonvoy number is unacceptable. Elite status is part of what guests pay for through loyalty and spend. Front desk staff should know and apply the program rules correctly at check-in, rather than inventing conditions that do not exist in Marriott policy. Well, maybe they will educate him.

I especially like the tile in the bathroom - it was that perfect blend of having enough grip so you don't slip in the shower, but it looks nice and is comfortable to walk on. 2. Breakfast was pleasant each morning. It didn't change enough from day to day (which gets a little old after a week there), but there is enough variety where it's not too bad. 3. Staff was friendly and I got water replenished each day. 4. Location is convenient to Eagle Street Pier as well as Queen Street retail. Cons: 1. There was constant noise at night as they were fixing the road, even from the 28th floor. Not the hotel's fault, but it was hard to ignore. 2. The gym is very tiny. It's not awful, but it is definitely below average. 3. The room heater doesn't get that warm. The solution was to ask for a portable heater which worked ok.

It's a couple blocks from the river, right across from south bank, and a few blocks from the skytower. It worked out perfectly! We got upgraded to one bedroom suite and it was ideal for our family of five. The bed was phenomenal and the rain shower an absolute delight. The pool was a quick kid favorite and the workout facilities, right next to the pool, we're very nice for mom and dad. The executive lounge was perfect. They served a nice breakfast in the morning and had drinks/snacks in the evening. If you are traveling with kids, they don't allow anybody under 18 in the lounge after 6 PM, so that was the only piece of information we were lacking initially. Everyone we met was friendly and very hospitable, and overall the place was just perfect. Next time we find ourselves in Brisbane, this is going to be a spot that we head up again. You should too!
