The staff are lovely, and it's well lit, so you don't have to worry what colour things are going to turn out when you get them home. I did a Google search for yarn stores nearby and came across Maxime's, so I stopped in. I explained what I was working on, shared what size I was aiming to make it, and showed the yarn I had already started my project with. They recommended a similar yarn (they didn't have an exact match) and how many skeins they thought I would need (which initially I thought sounded like too much, but I'm newer to crochet, so I went with it and sure enough, they were right -- I was surprised at how much yarn blankets eat up)! The Hayfield baby chunky yarn I used is nice. I also bought a couple of ergonomic hooks (I explained the type I was using and that I was having some hand fatigue, and one of the ladies suggested it would help -- she was right!), measuring tape, plastic darning needles, and yes, a bit more yarn for other projects. :) I was sad to have missed their bi-monthly meet-up in the shop, which I had read about on their website, due to conflicting plans. Essentially, you can bring your project and work on it while sitting and chatting with fellow yarn enthusiasts. They provide coffee, tea, and light snacks and you are asked to bring a small donation amount to support a cause of their choosing. Overall, I was happy to find Maxime's and the ladies there were friendly and helpful. I certainly had a great time crafting during my time in the area and have some lovely gifts for friends and family as a result!

It was lovely to be able to purchase British wool while actually in England rather than having to send for it through the post.The owner helped me pick out the proper wool to go with the pattern I'd chosen and suggested wooden needles so that I could knit on the long flight back to the States. I'm not sure if you are still allowed knitting needles wood or otherwise on flights anymore but I had finished half the sweater by the time we landed at Newark. I still wear it every spring and really appreciated the input the store owner gave me whilst making my pattern and yarn decisions . It is this input that I attribute to my still loving the sweater so much ( right colour, yarn weight and pattern for my colouring and build) Thanks!

There are a few fabric shops on Berwick street so shop around for the fabric you want at the price you want. I've never bought fabric from a shop before, i've always gone to the market, and this place was a bit pricey at £3/m for undyed cotton. The place is an Aladdin's cave of fabric and the staff were helpful and asked what weight fabric i wanted. I hadn't a clue but they had some good advice for me. They even climbed over mountains of other fabric to get me the cloth i wanted. I'm going to keep shopping around for somewhere cheaper, but will go back if i'm in the area.

To be honest, most of the fabric stores on Berwick St. have grouchy and sullen employees, but this place is the worst. I have shopped at the fabric shops on Berwick Street since 2013 and the rotten attitude of the staff at this store (in my experience) has been consistent. It has not mattered who has worked there, that's the funny part, I am not even speaking about one person. Everyone I have ever encountered there is rude. About two years ago I mentioned how unpleasant the staff were to another salesperson at MacCulloch & Wallis and he told me that he used to work there, agreed that the staff were unfriendly and in particular worked a woman who customers always complained about. The negative vibes this store gives off has discouraged me from shopping there for about a year or more. But today I thought I would go in, because it does have a great selection. However, once again the Berwick Street Cloth Shop vibe was moody. Therefore I have finally decided to write this negative review because of my final horrible experience. I was looking at fabric bent down while a sales person was busy organizing the rolls of cloth across from me. She accidentally hit me in the face with the end of the fabric roll. I stammered "oh sorry" and as she turned around to glare at me, she aloofly said "what, did I hit you?" to which I replied "yes". She then very (surprise!) rudely responded "sorry". So I said "I am sorry I guess I am in the way" to which she said "no it's fine". LIKE OBVIOUSLY IT'S FINE I AM A CUSTOMER. It's absolutely okay to accidentally bump into someone or hit them in the face, but to do so and not react until the person who has been hit says sorry to which you then glare back is too much. Literally comical. There are so many shops on Berwick Street, for price and value go to my favorite shop there The Cloth Shop. The selection is varied and the staff are much much much more friendly. Fabric shops should be enjoyable to enter and explore. No one should feel intimidated to go and ask for help or buy stuff. Lastly I feel bad for anyone who works there that is nice, because I have not met you and this review is focused on everyone being glum. But in my experience I have only ever encountered mean spirited people. Two stars, one for beautiful goods and the other for the one nice employee who maybe exists there.

My fellow yelper wasn't so lucky, as she seems to be looking for some items that just don't prevail anywhere in the UK, but if you need a crafting mecca, I suggest you pick up a crossword puzzle and take the tube ride out. It's just a short 5-10 min walk from the tube station too!

They sell luxury fabrics such as embroidered silk, black lace, velvet and furs that suit well for theatrical costume or bridal wear. In addition they have now added 'Peace Silk' to their merchandise. 'Peace Silk' means the moths are allowed to emerge from their cocoons to live out their full life cycle, conventional silk is made by boiling the intact cocoons and unwinding the single silk strand onto reels. Peace Silk has a different feel to commercial silk, it is soft, fluffy and light as a cloud. (There! and you thought I wouldn't explain the difference!) I haven't bought anything from them so far, but having a good browse is a sure way of getting ideas for projects and letting your hands do most of the enjoyment.

You will be treated like a princess, and there is no need for using elbows or sweating in queues. But luxury is not cheap, and as I have been browsing and searching fabrics around London I have noticed that this store, as does it's rivals, add some nice Soho-extra for the price tag. You can find many of these silks (and I mean the very same fabric) with a lot more affordable prices if you just find your way out of zone1.
