I arrived here in January as a wedding guest and stayed for two nights. The hotel reception area and function rooms are beautiful, a great place to hold a wedding, birthday or conference. I did feel that the quality of the bedrooms did not match the price charged and this is why I can only give 3 out of 5. The bed was comfy enough, however the pillows were too soft, the hair drier barely dried your hair and the bathroom had been neglected. The floor had several marks and the bath was dirty around the edges. I would also say that the breakfast was not very good so all in all, a disappointing experience for the money. I did enjoy the wedding and the bride and groom had a fantastic day but I feel the rooms need to be improved.

The food was fine, the location easy to get to and the overall look and feel of the place was as I would expect. What let it all down for me was the service. At the bar, a disinterested bar staff that didn't bother to smile, help or even really engage with the paying customers. Ordering a G&T at £3.80 and then having half a glass, no slice of lemon or lime or anything and a barman that seemed to amuse himself by flinging the empty tonic bottle into a bin. If you are going to use catering sizes of mixers then get glasses that look full when you use them. A paltry effort like this wont make me come back to the bar. The same guy actually served drinks during the meal. Clutching three bottles of wine (red, white, rose) in between his fingers he proceeded to fill the champagne glass on the table with red wine. No idea if this was deliberate, the forgot to serve champagne for the toasts or they don't have a clue. I suspect the third is most accurate. Rolled up sleeves, sighing, no grace or even a sense of how to serve. As I said, the food was fine. It was the service that let the place down. Hotels are not cheap for weddings, and really a friendly and efficient staff should be a given. Needs to improve.

The croissants were gone. We were fine with that because we got there late. However one of the servers came back 10minutes later with two hot out of the oven croissants. Above and beyond. I would highly recommend this hotel. Rooms clean! And comfy.

Everybody said that the food was excellent and to my surprise, it was soooo cheap! The UK isn't the cheapest place to eat in Europe but we had 5 main courses and 5 drinks and the price for all was under 70 pounds. The dining room was beautifully decorated and from what we saw of the hotel, it was on the "posh" side, which was nice. The friendly staff was also a plus. Highly recommended for eating and I would bet that staying there is also a good experience, being just a very short distance to the beach.

Located at Maidens harbour with its fishing boats bobbing about, it makes sense that there would be a focus on fresh fish! The menu is well balanced though and fans of meat, poultry and vegetarian fare are well catered for. The dining room is modern, bright and airy and full of nice decorative touches. The drinks are a little more expensive than some places but they are generous with the jugs of iced water at the table, so thumbs up for that. I'm not a fan of fizzy soft drinks, so as I was driving I opted for a glass of lime cordial with tap water which also kept my costs right down. Being a bit greedy we polished off the warm fresh bread and butter before our starters arrived, but the friendly staff were only too happy to bring us another basket on the house. Our starters were fabulous as were our mains, but we had no room left for dessert which is a pity, as it doesn't add much to the bill at lunchtime! This is a place where tables are properly set with linens and nice cutlery and its a perfect spot to bring someone for a special occasion. It may be a fair drive for most people to get here, but it's definitely worth the trip. I've dined here many times over the years and used the opportunity to walk across the beach to Culzean Castle where you can access the grounds free of charge. I don't feel too bad about not paying to get in, especially as I've been an almost lifelong member of the National Trust anyway. Another spot you can go to walk off lunch is the iconic Turnberry Lighthouse on the famous Open golf course. Its two minutes from Wildings Restaurant and there is a public right of way across the course. Tip: Ask for directions to the lighthouse at the Golf Club starters box so you can safely avoid getting hit on the bonce with a golf ball! Guests at the adjacent glitzy Trump Turnberry Resort Hotel flock to Wildings Restaurant for a change of scene. They know good food when they see it and I can't disagree with them! Went on the hunt for something better and happened upon The Chestnuts Hotel. A bit more expensive at £180 for two nights b&b for 2 adults and 2 kids, but what a difference. This is a family run hotel and all staff are friendly, courteous and efficient. Nothing is too much of a bother and the place is immaculate. We are not ones for eating in hotels as we like to see a bit if the area but this place is so good there's no need to go elsewhere. It's handy for all decent attractions in Ayr and a short walk from the beach. Even if you don't stay here, pop in for a beer (real ale too!) or some food as its the business. You won't be disappointed.

It probably helped that the sunshine came out during the day, but the bridge, river, and old buildings all make for a very picturesque location to have a wedding. Food wise everything tasted great, we had soup, pate (which I ate, as usually I am not a fan, but this tasted good), lamb gigot chops with mash and also some brilliant cheesecake. Drinks wise there was bottles of punk and some other interesting craft beers on offer. The red wine served at the table was also lovely. The service was fast and efficient. Sat on a busy country road just past the little village, it doesn't look much from the front. Once you are past reception and into the bar area you have some stunning views. The main function room has a grand staircase entrance with again amazing views and a balcony the whole was round the outside. This room doubles up as a ceremony suit and also a dining room! After dinner was cleared it was now ready for the evening celebrations. No for the impressive part, the grounds. Set on a little river with high bridges on either side you can tell this place has some history!! I really would have liked to have spent more time here checking out these amazing grounds!
