It was hard to tell one church from another just looking on the Internet, but we stumbled upon a real treasure, Lake Hills Church. The worship was fresh and creative, even featuring a beautiful new song the music leader had just written. The message was excellent, simple but relevant, and very encouraging. But, desiring community in our new town forces us to search. Checking out the websites and the "what we believe" section, it seems like everyone just copies and pastes that whole thing changing just a few sentences. But really. We all know Jesus is the Son of God, the Bible is infallible and the Holy Spirit is here now. What about those deeper issues that can show the true heart of a congregation? These are the foundations of a congregation and will influence the teachings and the atmosphere of a church. I encourage you to email your prospective churches and ask the hard questions. Our situation now: Covid has been raging for half a year, George Floyd protests have exposed our deep sin and the protests have started to calm down a bit. You can love our Country and yet want to make it better. The sin of racism has wound its roots deep within our hearts. From the first "joke" our uncle made when we were little to our hastened footsteps as we walk down the street. When our power is challenged and our comfort threatened a Christians true colors are revealed. Such is the case at this church. My email asked questions such as what do they think about Black Lives Matter, shrouding of the Vance memorial, and AVLs historic reparations vote. The answers to my questions were disheartening. I encourage you to look past the typical "what we believe" and ask the hard questions to a prospective church. Be the Bridge by Latasha Morrison is a great resource to examine your heart on the matter. Because of this book I was able to clearly recognize the false doctrine I was presented by this pastor.
