The marker is quite tall, reading "Captain John Lonergan. 1837 - 1902. Hero of Gettysburg. In this park on July 22, 1863, Vermont's only ethnic Civil War unit was welcomed home from the battle of Gettysburg. Lonergan commanded Co. A, 13th VT Regiment - the Irish Company - and he received the Medal of Honor for gallantry in the battle. "The five VT regiments on 9-months duty formed the 2nd VT Brigade on October 27, 1862. In late June of 1863, the brigade marched from Union Mills, VA. to Gettysburg in six days. "On July 2, 1863, the Irish Company helped recapture four cannons and took 83 rebel prisoners. The next day Lonergan's men led the way when two VT regiments flanked Pickett's forces assaulting Cemetery Ridge, causing heavy rebel losses. "The Irish battle cry: Faugh a ballagh - Clear the way!" Ah Winooski. It's a small industrial town on the other side of the river from Burlington, and it…read morewas the place I called home for several years during graduate school. I enjoyed the quiet stream flowing by, outside my apartment window, and the recreational opportunities it provided such as kayaking out to Lake Champlain and fishing or swimming if you dared. Okay I will admit occasionally, it got a little smelly...I think there were some sewage issues - but I always found it pretty. Winooski has been growing and changing. I will say that I like the changes and only some of them have scared me. I love the Blue Star Cafe for their fabulous coffee. I've enjoyed many evenings at at the Monkey Bar and have found memories of meeting the recent love of my life there. Sneakers has a place in my heart for breakfast, as long as you get there before the crowds. I'm glad they added the rotary because it helps with traffic, but it was pretty scary for the first several weeks, while people learned how to drive in it. I'm a little nostalgic at the moment, and missing this funny little one square mile town with weird laws and low speed limits. It was nice place to call home for a bit.

Our home was recently burglarized in Lake Placid, NY, while we were out of town, and I want to take…read morea moment to sincerely thank the NY State Police Troop based in Ray Brook, NY. Within moments of this unfortunate event I was in communication with the Troopers, and answered their questions as they began to process the scene for evidence. Over the next 72 hours they diligently worked the case, including overtime for a number of the Troopers, and were able to identify the suspects and secure what had been taken from our home. These State Troopers were courteous and understanding, and also energized and determined to figure out who burglarized our home. These are the Troopers who put the time and effort into this case.
