    Meadow trail
    Anna S.

With Ms. Rona making her big comeback this winter, I've been feeling a bit cooped up and out of touch with nature. I was perusing the All Trails app when I discovered Cromwell Valley Park and its many, many trails. I decided to hop in the car and get some fresh air. Once I pulled up to the park driveway, I realized I've driven past quite a few times and never even noticed it. As others have mentioned, there are a few parking lots but I can imagine on weekends or nice days that they could fill up pretty quickly. It was around noon on a weekday so I had luck finding myself a spot and quickly began the 1.7 mile loop on the "Loch Raven Drive and Meadow Trail". You get to walk past old lime kilns, through a gorgeous open meadow, and under a thick forest. I spotted a fire pit in the middle of the meadow which can be reserved with a permit and there are plenty of picnic tables and benches scattered throughout the park. Even in the wintertime this place was really beautiful - you could see Pretty Boy dam off in the distance through the bare trees. I'm sure it's even prettier when everything is in bloom. It should also be noted that this park is very dog friendly too! I look forward to coming back throughout the year to see how it looks in different seasons. Overall, this was a nice workout on a clearly marked trail and I'll be sure to keep exploring.

Went hiking here with a friend today. Great hiking area with clearly marked trails. I prefer the dirt paths v. the rock/gravel paths. Be aware that some of the trails have incline ! Lots of dogs on the trails too! There is a nice nature center and some outdoor cages with all kinds of things in them! All in all a fun time!

Adorable chickens in Cromwell Valley Park.

I came here today for a quick pleasant lunchtime walk with my mom. The parking lots were not so crazy crowded as they have been on the weekends. We walked a loop of mostly flat trail and of course got some quality time with the chickens and turkeys. Also, be aware that there are some free-range turkeys here too. Thank you for the lovely walk, Cromwell Valley Park!

This park is very historic. Very big, with lots of trails. There is historic slave graves, on the land. The trails are very nice, there are various trails all over the park. You may even see some friends, on your walk. Lots of different types of nature.

    River on the blue trail!

I love Cromwell Valley!! Been going here since I was young. I came with my dog to collect some of the hiking trail markers in my hiking book. We had a great time! She especially loved the river and got herself soaked! We also had a good time looking at the animals. Highly recommend for a fun hike by yourself, with friends, or with your pup!

Lots of birdhouses like this throughout the park

This place is great for trail running. Woods, meadows, creeks and some good climbing. You can also get to the loch raven trails from here.

For this reason, it feels very safe since there are houses and people around not too far from the middle of this park. Very good parking lot and clear map when you enter. Playgrounds and covered pavilion/picnic areas too! Even though it is small, there are a lot of trail options, you can mix and match them and make it as short or long as you want. Last time I was there I did a mixture of the inner and outer trails and it was just under 2 miles. The trails are not marked well, they are a little confusing and I get turned around every time I go there, and I am pretty good with directions! Make sure to take a picture of the map before you enter! Overall it is a very easy hike though, not a lot of steep inclines. The best part about it though is the water. It is known for the rocks obviously and small waterfalls. It is very peaceful and pretty. Someone made chairs out of tree branches at one point in the trail, that was kind of cool!

Me and my friends made a quick stop on the way home from brunch in the Cross Keys area, and the day was perfect for it. The park was alive with families and their furry friends just having small picnics and taking in the scenery. If you're not familiar with Sherwood Garden's, it's a privately owned community park in the Guilford section of Baltimore City. It's been famous for its annual tulip since the 1920's by John Sherwood, whose home bordered the park. To this day up to 70000 tulips are planted annually along with other flowers such as magnolias and dogwoods to name a few. Best time to visit is always towards the end of April and beginning of May. Although a private park, the public is always invited to stroll at your leisure throughout the grounds. The ongoing displays are 100% privately funded and depends entirely on contributions to fulfill its mission of providing a natural place for recreation for the community and related education.

There is no start or end, so just park on one of the surrounding streets and walk over. We were there the third weekend in April, and while the tulips were definitely past their peak, and many were completely gone, there were plenty of flower beds of tulips still blooming. Plus, almost all of the azaleas were blooming. I loved that they had so many different colored tulips and azaleas. They did different combination of colors in all the different flower beds, so we ended up seeing some surprisingly beautiful displays, even with some tulips no longer blooming. We weren't there very long because it was cold out, but this would be a great spot for engagement pictures or a picnic.

Otherwise it's very odd that the only place with information on the park won't share it with the public. I almost gave up trying to join (and I literally live down the street), but then one day I saw this application at the library. It says to mail it in. I haven't tried yet. I hope that works. If not, then I have no idea how to get the gate code. It's almost like no one wants you to join. What a weird concept for a public dog park. Anyway attached is the application if it's helpful. FYI you need a city dog license and updated rabies cert to join (if you can figure out how to join!).

The Georgia mansion home was the largest private home in America when it was completed in 1790. The estate was a plantation, one of the largest in Maryland, and hundreds of people were enslaved at the plantation until the end of the Civil War. The property is operated by the National Park Service, so a park ranger gives guided tours of the property. Our ranger guide was really friendly and did a wonderful job guiding us through the house. She taught us about the history of the area, the family, and the estate. She taught us about the architecture of the house and the artifacts visible throughout the house (many of which are original to the home). She also highlighted the lives and stories of enslaved persons who spent part or the entirety of their lives at Ridgely. There is some important Maryland history here at Hampton, and I really appreciated our experience. The house is undergoing some renovations right now and we were a bit tight on time, so we weren't able to explore the grounds (I think you can visit the slave quarters, cemetery, and more on the grounds), so I'd like to go back and explore more of the site's history. As an NPS property, it's free to visit and tour and definitely worth checking out. It's history hidden in plain sight - you've probably driven past it many times without stopping by!
