Roundhay Road Resource Centre

Working as a central point for community groups this building was established not to run resources…read morebut to supply the actual infrastructure needed to run dedicated working community groups from. In other words the building provided workstations and a quality working environment for community groups as well as good environment for fragmented, vulnerable or disenfranchised members of the community to seek help from. Groups in the centre include help for asylum seekers and refugees, South Leeds Health for All, Community Action and Support Against Crime and Leeds Development Education Centre.
Despite looking like a bank (it's housed in an old Barclay's building), the Roundhay Road Resource…read moreCentre is in fact a lively hub and an important resource for the community. The idea is to provide a one-stop shop for community services, offering reasonably priced office accommodation to groups working in the social sector. In practice, this means that individuals looking for support can come here and have many of their needs under the same roof. When I visited, it was still new and many of the spaces were unfilled, but already the atmosphere was warm, communal and engaging. Anyone who entered the building was made to feel welcome, which is especially good considering many of the groups operating from here work with vulnerable people, and there were plenty of staff on hand to advise and assist. They are currently advertising for more services to set up their offices here, and in my opinion any groups with social or environmental aims would benefit from being part of this community.

~ A great therapist and facilitator ~…read more Danny's impacts run deep. He listens very well, yet does not blank when faced with the human dimension, nor is clinically detached in the same way other therapists can so commonly be. He investigates topics WITH you, making them approachable and human; yes, even exploring difficult things can be fun and Danny makes that so... His teachings are memorable, personal and embodied. A truly great therapist and facilitator, particularly for if you are trying to untangle something, uncover something, discover something and or feel authentically empowered. The only balancing feedback I would give would be to say - I dream for an empire of D's teachings! Workshops, Workplace interventions... Wall-to-Wall... basically be Starbucks ;) ...

Citizens Advice Bureau are a god send for many people. If you don't already know what they do, then…read moreyou need to read this or look at their website in case you ever find yourself in a sticky situation involving housing, debts, employment etc. They basically know your rights and they understand the law. They offer "free, confidential, impartial and independent advice and information on a wide range of subjects" and can help you figure out what to do in times of need or confusion. For example if your landlord owes you money, or isn't doing their job properly you could go to Citizens Advice Bureau. Or, if you are in a lot of debt, or you are having employment difficulties. They may be able to help and keep you informed on what your rights are. It is often better than trying to take things into your own hands, they know what they are doing and will be able to inform you of various options of action to take. 90% of their workforce is made up of volunteers, and they are always open to applications, so if you fancy volunteering for CAB the check out their website.
CAB do a brilliant job at what they do. Sorting out their website & getting hold of them by phone…read moreis obviously a VERY LOW PRIORITY FOR THEM & is quite another matter. The website gives an 0870 number, doesn't work, but no other number given. Looked in the phone book, gives an 0844 number, which then gives a Leeds number. When you ring that number, the list of places, times, dates etc is, frankly very, very off-putting!! I have a degree & I was struggling to keep up with them & take it all in. So my advice to the CAB is GET YOUR WEBSITE & PHONES SORTED!!! ASAP!!! PLEASE!!!!
I went to visit the CAB while experiencing some, ahem, minor difficulties at work (hem hem say no…read moremore). I found them extremely well informed, with a lot of extra resources at their fingertips, and very keen to put clients in full possession of all the facts pertinent to their case. All power to the excellent staff, especially in light of the fact that these people are largely volunteers. You do have to get there awfully early in order to be seen, let me caution you! Unbelievably early! In fact, I would say give them a phone call and check their hours out before just turning up: otherwise you may well just be wasting your time. But it's liable to be well worth a visit should you be in the position of needing a little advice
