    Croque Madame
    Benjamin C.

I admit, I have passed by Croque so many times but I've never felt compelled to go in and try it out. I dunno why, could be its location isn't exactly the most ideal to put a cafe, or I keep getting distracted with the other restos near my place. Who knows? Anyway, I finally dropped by to check it out, and I am sufficiently satisfied with it. Croque is a comfy little nook in the rather chaotic but emerging Arnaiz Avenue. The bakery cafe is easy on the eyes and looks to have a decent menu. You would not be off your game to bring a date here, and it looks like a nice place to bring your crew as well. I tried out their Croque Madame, reasoning it must be good for them to name their cafe after it. And it was! Creamy, savory, and rich, the Croque Madame was wonderful and satisfying. The bread was of the right texture, the sauce was on point, and the slice of ham imparted just the right texture and flavor to the dish. I still think that Croque would have been better suited inside Legaspi or Salcedo Village. I bet they'd do much better if they were more accessible. Still, I'm glad I dropped by to check out this place. I'll be back to try out their other dishes, but for now, color me impressed.

Croque is one of the newer dining places along Aranaiz Avenue that has piqued my interest. They are basically a bakeshop that offers so much more. They specialize in freshly baked breads and their own drink combinations (summer coolers). This is a great place to hang out in the middle of they day, when it gets too hot or you just need a break from work. Drop by to sample their specialty breads. I'm a big fan of the one with the Speculoos cookie butter filling. Their cakes have very rich icings and a fluffy center, try the Salted Caramel and Ganache mini-cake. Though small, it is very decadent so sharing it with a friend is highly recommended. Pair this with one of their coolers for a refreshing break. I super love the virgin kalamansi cooler. They also have some full meals for those who are there during lunch break. The place is accessible by walking but for those taking a car, parking is at the back of Dominion building.

Croque Cafe and Bakery is a small, cozy cafe along Pasay Road in Makati City--perfect for a late afternoon merienda meeting with work mates or a late night out with friends. Due to limited dining space, it may not be an ideal place to meet during the busy lunch hour. We found ourselves in the area looking for a bite to eat after attending an event on a rainy night. We had the Pork Feast Platter, which I found to be good. I would have preferred a little more time on the grill for the sausages for that crisp exterior. The pastries were okay. I am quite intrigued by the other items on the menu--specifically the crispy chicken skin dish and the cheese platter--and I should plan a return trip to Croque the next time I am in the area.

Cafe-UK is one of those cafes that manages to establish it's own identity able to set itself apart from the generic or those that aspire to be a copycat of Starbucks. They have tea, coffee, juice, and a wide variety of American canned drinks that you won't find in your local grocery. There's a lot of food to choose from. They're a bit pricey, but the size and the taste will more than make up for it. Cafe UK has some of the best cakes I've ever had. Their cakes come in the form of a slice or a mini cake. I love the fact that they offer several kinds of cheesecake with the triple chocolate cheesecake being my favorite, I mean it's cheesecake and chocolate come on! Cafe UK is open 24 hours, and becomes a great places to study at around nine in the evening. Things are quiet at this hour up to around ten in the morning the following day, at which point it becomes a melting pot for the different students from the different schools that populate Mendiola. Wi-fi is free, which is probably another reason why so many students love to congregate at this awesome cafe. The biggest quirk that this cafe has that I don't find anywhere else are the free to use iPads. Never have I walked into a cafe that has free to use iPads, These iPads are ingeniously built into the table, I often find students spending a lot of their time drinking their orders and playing the latest games on Cafe UK's tablet. Free WiFi, excellent food and drinks, wonderful prompt service, and the tablets allows Cafe UK to deliver a great experience. Go for a visit sometime and I promise you that it'll be time and money well spent.

Walked in last weekend during a crazy downpour, dripping wet, and the barista just smiled, handed me a towel to dry off, and asked what I felt like without any rush. Sat by the window watching the rain hammer Pasong Tamo, worked on my laptop for hours with zero pressure to leave. The space is still that perfect mix of raw concrete and warm light, never too crowded, always calm. Staff remembered my usual order even though it's been months since I last dropped by. Fortunately, Habitual Coffee holds its own. Situated on a super industrial part of Pasong Tamo (though gentrification is very real and will probably make its way here very soon), it's kind of out of the way compared to most third wave coffee spots. This is a good thing though! I've never had a problem finding a seat there. The set up is great too. Very industrial. I like the large amount of natural light and sparse feeling of the place. There's a lot of exposed concrete and metal, making the place very Instagram worthy. There are also outlets, wifi, and pretty large tables so getting some work done here is definitely possible. I just wish the seats were more supportive. The coffee is amazing! I believe Yardstick sourced a lot of their coffee while I was there. Their mocha and Americano are great. Not too bitter. The only downside I have is the clientele was a little snooty. The staff, however, was great.

That's because most of them try to be something that they're not, which is of course Starbucks. Few cafes out there establish their own identity. Few cafes in Metro Manila can stand out from the competition without emulating Starbucks. Cafe UK is a part of the few. A local favorite among the people in P. Noval, Cafe UK never fails to draw a crowd each day. A crowd mostly made up of students. The students love it here. Great ambiance, good food and coffee, nice staff and free Wi-Fi are just a few of the reasons why this place has become a regular on many people's place to chill. I'm pretty sure the guy who owns this place knows his target market. I mean, the way this place feels and how it's setup is just so right for students. It's tailor made to appeal to that kind of demographic. The branch here in P. Noval looks a bit tight and cramped. What it lacks in floor area it makes up for with the number of floors. In a way though, I actually liked the cramped space of this cafe. It forces people to be close and conversations are more likely to be intimate and engaging that way. Cafe UK is sweet. It draws students are drawn to it like flies are to honey. A warning though, be sure to bring a jacket. The place can get really cold especially at night.

The place was comfy not because there were couches everywhere but because you've-got-the-entire-floor-to-yourselves-with-comfy-pillows type of comfy. The place is not a typical tables and chairs cafe, what you'll see are sort of cabins with throw pillows that's enough for you and your friends to fit in. The place is also perfect if you have gadgets (wifi availability!), you can easily plug it on the wall socket if you ran out of battery. And every cabin has one. How generous, right? The place is great and cozy, the concept was superb. However, if you're planning for a quiet Me Time in the cafe, you might get distracted with other customers, they tend to get really noisy. The Main Event Travel Caramel Frappe Caramel Macchiato Blueberry Cheesecake I was told that Blueberry cheesecake was their best-seller so I've tried it, although it was great, it didn't stand out from other blueberry cheesecake I've tried. The coffees were just right, too. One thing that I love about this place? It's very Instagram-friendly!! We were billed less than P600 for 2. Inclusive of service charge.

Or was that just me? Getting back on track and away from bouncing balls, the owner of Cafe Noriter opened a new place in the building right beside in, in Archer's Nook Dormitory. Lasallians, this is the building with the Yellow Cab and Army Navy. Take the stairs to the second floor and you'll see a very Korean coffee place, with a very Korean owner greeting you at the door, and very Korean pop music playing on low in the background. The restaurant itself is THE dream for students with extra-long breaks between classes. Like the old Noriter, it features double-deck loft-type nooks filled with the most comfortable marshmallow pillows you can imagine. I've fallen asleep on these pillows and I'm proud of it. Oh wait, I'm not. Remember that very Korean owner by the door? He's also very gorgeous and he carries a camera with him, and he takes a photo of every guest after they've settled in, which he posts on Facebook and on the main wall. Ladies (and men, I don't know) take note and prepare accordingly. The prices are a bit steep, but let's face it, you'll probably only order one slice of cake (if you do, try the blueberry cheesecake -- it's heavenly) and stay there for hours on end. Can't blame you. I've done that countless times.
