I have an open-gym membership and have 24-7 access to the gym (perfect for my schedule), NICE equipment, and killer atmosphere. The part I love most is the family I joined. Since day one, as an outsider, I felt welcomed and valued as a member. Justin, the owner and head coach, is knowledgeable, humble, and just a genuinely good person. When I walk in I know that I will get amazing results and great coaches. Coach Adam has been an unbelievably amazing coach to me.. I am 100% deaf, and upon learning this, he immediately started to learn how to sign in American Sign Language. His inclusiveness really helped alleviate my fears as a deaf person in a mostly speaking environment. You'll get a great full-body workout that builds strength, stamina, and improves your mobility. And it's FUN. If you come regularly you will experience results. Josh is the owner and so much more. He's also a kick ass coach and he does a majority of the programming. He keeps things spicy but all of the workouts are scaleable to your fitness level and ability. Josh is always encouraging and knows how to push you to be better, stronger and faster. If Josh is building an army, sign me up for the front line. The rest of the coaches are top notch as well. Chrissy, Heather, Cam, Phil, Marnie, JD, Shawn and Ali are all experienced athletes with the competence to instruct and push you. They will take the time to break down seemingly complicated movements to ensure proper form and make sure you are safe. The coaches are attentive and will ensure you get the most from your workouts. There's a huge priority on proper warm ups, stretching, form instruction, and scaling weights to your abilities. This makes it possible for new members and veterans to workout side by side and for everyone to get a great workout. On Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings, Courtney is the yoga/mobility instructor and she's phenomenal as well. The community at New Species is amazing. We cheer each other along and help push each other through difficult workouts. We hang out and chat after workouts. People organize outings outside of the workouts (happy hours, house parties, pickup games, etc.). These people are MY people. I'm not the fastest or the strongest. In fact, I'm usually towards the rear of the pack. But Crossfit isn't about that. Everyone supports everyone. We strive to get better, but no one tries to be better at the expense of someone not as capable. Since starting at New Species I've put on almost 10 lbs of muscle (while my pants size remains the same!) and have taken over 1 full minute off my comfortable mile time. I'm doing things I never dreamed I was capable of and at 36 years old I am in the best shape of my active life. Forget Disneyland, New Species just may be the happiest place on earth.

Thanks to my Aunt De-De and Uncle Warren, I was talked into getting up pretty early last Saturday…read moremorning to meet them for a workout at Art of Strength. I didn't know what to expect other than an intense workout, and that's exactly what I received! The class I attended was split into two smaller groups. One went with Mike and one with Peter. I went with Peter and my workout included cardio (with a stationary bike, rowing machine, ski machine, and jumping jacks), lunges, upper body using a medicine ball and ropes, and a ton of squats. I liked how we kept switching exercises so I didn't get bored at all. I also liked that Peter took into account injuries of those in our group and gave them alternative exercises that were right for their situation... trainers / instructors don't always do that. The folks in Mike's group (including my aunt, uncle, cousin, brother, and a few friends) were all out of breath and dripping sweat by the end of their workout. I could tell that Mike's reputation is to be tough and kind of a smart-ass, but it works. He's a huge motivator for those in the gym. I loved the energy at AOS and I would totally workout here if I lived in Michigan full time. I was a little nervous after the workout that I'd be too sore to stand up at my sister's wedding that evening, but I felt great and had a fabulous time at the wedding... Thanks again to Peter for the workout and to Aunt De-De for motivating me to get my ass to AOS that morning!

They were welcomed by the instructor with open arms and had their first experience working those accessory muscles. If you're looking for a welcoming environment, this appears to be it. The instructor even gave them a certificate to acknowledge their achievement. I am a firm believer in the positive, motivating culture of group fitness, and I think those boys are now, too.

Parking on a Saturday morning in Ferndale was shockingly not hard to find, you just have to pay unfortunately. It's not crazy expensive though. The entrance to push pilates is through the back of the building; I only found this out because I followed other people. Everything was already laid out and clean. The instructor checked everybody in individually as they walked in. The HIIT Pilates class was amazingly tough and satisfying. I enjoyed the music and instructor. The only thing I didn't like was a kid younger than 10 being there, and so many late people coming in messing up the flow. The instructor had to keep bringing out more mats and equipment when class already started. So she ended up putting the kiddo on the couch in the back so the late people could have a spot. Not sure if that normally happens but it was definitely a distraction to her and us. I understand 10 minutes being late, maybe even 15 minutes, but after that, I think there needs to be some sort of limitations
