This place is AMAZING!! I've been going here for a few months now, and I really look forward to each workout and have seen great improvements in my strength and flexibility. The coaches are super engaged and truly care about each athlete. There is a true focus on safety and form, which isn't always the case at other boxes. They are all really talented at providing little tweaks to help fine tune complex movements. I've overcome my fear of the barbell from working out here. The gym itself is pretty large and has ample supply of nice equipment, which is kept tidy and clean. The prices are very reasonable for what you get, and there are a lot of packages to choose from. There's a 10% discount for Children's/Brigham/BI hospital employees. Finally, the community is the best. There are usually icebreakers if new people are present, and it really feels like a family. If you want to get you health back in peak physical shape, look no further, cuz you've found it with Crossfit on the Hill. Promise. When I started (almost a year ago) I was "skinny-fat" You know that weird grey zone when people think you're in shape but when you take all your clothes off and see that spare tire around your waist and your flabby arms, you cringe? yea, that was me. Not to say I am a toned, fit, athletic model but I've had so many improvements (aka serious gainz) since starting last summer! I began by doing the "foundations course" classes. Its a great way to get one-on-one personal training with a coach to learn the basic movements and for the coaches to assess my strengths and weaknesses. My first couple of classes, I was thrilled to see so many walks of life there. It wasn't just shredded beef-cakes, and supple leopards, like I was expecting, but instead people older, younger, big and small. Crossfit is literally for everyone, since you scale based to what you are able to do. No one is pressuring you to work past your comfort zone (Which I was worried about) and never did I feel like I was going to puke after the workout since I listen to my body and moved at my own pace. Instead, there is a community( rather, a family) encouraging you and cheering you on! Its true what they say, often times in Crossfit, the person to finish last is the one that gets cheered on the most! I never had so many people cheer my name before! And every workout is different, which means- you don't get bored! Kettlebell swings, pull ups, clean and jerks, wall balls, deadlifts, rowing, double unders- I can go on!! All the coaches have lots of experience and come from different backgrounds, they each have their own special way of running class and are all very knowledgeable in their trade. Crossfit is for someone who wants to see what their body is capable of doing- never did I think I would run a 5k (let alone a mile) without stopping to take a puff of my albuterol inhaler. But guess what? I did it, and I have the coaches and the training at Crossfit on the Hill to thank. I cant even remember the last time I needed my inhaler! My endurance, strength, mobility and confidence has skyrocketed since joining. Some people think the price is extreme, but that's if you are one that puts their health on the back-burner. Fine, just keep sitting on the couch, watching Netflix and develop Diabetes Type II from living a sedentary life-style...paying for insulin/visiting doctors are WAY more expensive. Highly recommend On the Hill for anyone who wants their workout to be challenging and personalized to meet YOUR goals. It takes a lot for me to get out of bed on a Saturday morning and dash for the gym, but I'd do that for Jenna in a heartbeat, totally worth it! I go to COTH for personal training with Dan. Full disclosure: Dan is actually a friend of mine. BUT I don't get any preferential treatment or discounts and also I'm pretty critical. I've had a passport membership to BSC for over 2 years and I probably have been a total of 50 times? I'd have moments where I'm really good and then I stop. I was thinking about personal training for a while and was going back and forth between BSC and COTH. The cost is similar but COTH doesn't have a contract and is on a per session basis. BSC you need to pay for 6 months at a time. I ultimately decided to go with COTH because although it's further from me and the gym certainly isn't as nice as BSC, it seemed like the trainers are invested in each individual. Ok fine and I didn't have faith in myself that I'd last 6 months. Anyways, I'm so far very, VERY happy with my personal training sessions. I REALLY look forward to my sessions and love working out with Dan. Since COTH isn't my regular gym, Dan gives me homework to do catered to my abilities. At the very least I exercise 5 times a month which is a HUGE accomplishment. I teared up the day I did 80+ pushups. I typically quit after 5 -- no joke! Seeing "results" in this form keeps me motivated to continue working out on a regular basis, even if I can't make it to a session. Dan is super passionate about CF and more importantly, very caring and attentive to my personal goals and needs. He's not just a great coach, he's an amazing cheerleader! I think one concern I had about training with a friend is that I would feel judged, but he's been nothing short of encouraging. I am sure that his level of care would be all the more excellent to "strangers." I typically have my sessions when there's a group class going on, and you can tell that everyone there -- coaches and regular people alike -- all LOVE being there. It's very communal and "homey." I'm still a Netflix-binging couch potato at heart, but it seems that my body is shedding off that shell. read more

I had an extremely positive experience during my time at Crossfit On The Hill (or COTH, as they call it). I was definitely nervous during my first couple of visits since being the "new kid on the block" is never easy, but everyone was exceedingly welcoming and friendly. It was really a huge relief. And, to make it even better, the workouts were killer! Every time I attended a class I found myself pushing my limits and breaking through mental barriers. It definitely helped me grow as a person and as a lifter. The price (I paid $179/month) is comparable to other gyms, and well worth it in my opinion. Each time you go you have the chance to talk and work personally with one of their coaches. If you're having troubles with a certain movement, if you need a spotter, if you have a question about an injury or a hindrance, etc. etc. So, essentially, that membership cost includes personal training sessions any time you need them. COTH is such a great place to work out. The difference maker in my opinion is the coaching. I didn't expect anything close to the level of instruction and guidance I've received and have been able to make improvements on a lot of complex lifts in just my first few months. Working out here is nothing like the regular dull gym experience we're all used to. It's like you're athletes showing up to practice every day with your coaching staff and team. The programming keeps each workout interesting; introducing new challenges and also progressing on your goals. It's a blast. It's also a friendly and fun environment that anyone would feel comfortable in. Since repetition is the enemy at CrossFit, boredom never settles in. I trained and competed in martial arts for well over 15 years. Crossfit on the Hill, is one of the top Crossfit locations in the Boston area. The coaches, owner and facilities are top of the line. I had already been doing Crossfit for 6 months, before I moved to Boston and was searching for a new "box" to join. The same day that I moved to Boston, I called COTH, and Javy (the owner) quickly answered my call, and got me in the gym the same day for a free trial. Immediately, I knew that Crossfit on the Hill was a great fit. They have a great variety of experienced and knowledgeable staff that works tirelessly to help their members improve. Their facilities include everything that a crossfitter would need. They also provide a variety of classes run throughout each day. My favorite is the barbell strength and competitors class run by Josh Gould. The staff is focused on teaching proper technique and improving mobility to maximize results. In my short 3 months at COTH, my experience has been terrific, and my overall ability has improved in every facet of crossfitting. I was up in Boston for 3 weeks for a degree program, and worked out here almost everyday. The coaches could not have been nicer. I was there for a total of 19 days, worked out for about 15, and they only charged me for 10 classes - very reasonable. The workouts were hard and well thought out, as was the programming - excellent combo of strength training programs and brutal metcons. Javy and Josh were incredibly good guys, even though I was there for a short time, they were super nice and invested in my improvement. I've been doing crossfit since 2009, and this is easily one of best boxes I've been too - great programming, down to earth people, without any of the drama you sometimes see with crossfit. This is everything a CF gym should be. It's not flashy; they aren't trying to sell you their t-shirt. It didn't have that mass market feel; classes are capped at 15. It doesn't have a fancy billboard sign, and is off the beaten path. After dropping in I got the sense they really wanted you to enjoy your work out. I've been to 45+ CrossFits in my 3+ years. This is a great one that has small classes and focuses on quality. My travels take me to Boston frequently and I have tried all the CF's there. CrossFit on the Hill is the only one that felt like a true CF gym. I can tell Javy is more interested in training the athletes than packing his classes and making $.
