There are a lot of naysayers out there of Crossfit, usually people that have never participated in the training, but I can say I have found the negativity completely unfounded in Criterion. After all of the variety of training I did during 22 years in the Marine Corps, I wish I had known about Crossfit while I was still in. It is no wonder that so many members of the military, particularly Special Operators, and law enforcement and first responders use Crossfit as a valued training tool to enhance their capabilities. As a disabled Veteran, my coaches have worked with me and have scaled the workouts to achievable levels to help me set goals, build confidence, and get me back to the levels of fitness I want to achieve and more. Drew and Matt are outstanding coaches and just great people! Did I mention that they are both former Marines? Join this box and you're getting great coaching and supporting a Veteran-owned small business! And the people! The folks that I've met at this box have none of that globo gym attitude nor do they have any sense of "elite" snobbery that one might run across from other people at other Crossfit boxes. I could write a book on what I think about this place. I joined in Dec 2014 and holy hell was this…read moreplace intimidating, especially for someone as big and out of shape as myself. Luckily my first on ramp class a few friendly members introduced themselves to me which helped easy my nerves a tiny bit. Let me tell you, of all the gyms I've ever been a member (YMCA, Anytime, Snap, etc) no one has EVER done that unless they were trying to sell me a membership. So anyway I did on ramp and decided to stick with it because, plain and simple, I needed to. My body was fed up with the abuse I put it through. It was scary at first and I was fat, intimidated and shy and didn't want to talk to any of these incredibly fit people. But as I kept going people learned my name, they cheered for me, they wanted to watch me succeed. After the holidays I joined the 8 week fitness challenge that started in January. I started showing up 3x a week and as I got better I started showing up 4x per week. At the end of the challenge I weighed in at 14.5 lbs (and that was an evening bloated weight, not a 5 am weigh me now weight ), 5.5 inches, my strength increased by 20lbs and my benchmark wod increased by 25 reps. I couldn't believe the measured success! After the challenge I decided to sign up for the open and I just completed week 2. I can now do things like knees up and a few push ups in plank position. I couldn't do those in December or January. To date I've lost 21 lbs, 2 pants sizes, 1 dress size. I can do more burpees before I feel like I'm going to die, I can jog a little bit further than I could before, and jump rope, while still my nemesis, is getting better every week. I've realized I have my strengths and weaknesses inside the gym. The best part is that I've had such great success my sister joined crossfit and my sister-in-law hired a personal trainer. We're becoming a fit fam. My friends at JCCF still cheer for me and I still show up. I hope I encourage people to take charge of their fitness. If you're in on ramp and feeling intimidated just come talk to me. I'm at the 6:30 pm and 6 pm classes My ass can't run a half a mile so trust me you've got nothing to worry about . Everyone has to start somewhere. Even if it's learning to pick things off the floor without falling.

They are super motivating with their classes, which range from a resistance training class that's beginner-friendly with Coach Branda, to options for something tougher. They pay good attention to shoulder and hip mobility through a thoughtfully designed warm-up and then a sort of HIIT-style set of exercises that keep things fun and dynamic. Resistance ("strength and conditioning") classes are M/W/F and then there are stretch and yoga classes on other days. There is a great community here, with men and women, members of all ages, and beginners to serious competitors. I cannot more highly recommend this gym. I wish it were close to my home!

Luckily (or so I thought) I walked up as the class of two people were wrapping up... But I was denied a gym tour because the owner was overwhelmed that there was a walk-in. Lol. She said that she "had never had one before" and the look she gave me was so gross. Ew. I can't. There were literally just the two people leaving her and I in there..... any other CrossFit I've EVER walked up to greeted me with smiles and warmth bc THAT is what Real CrossFit gyms are about. This one can't even handle a walk in when there is no one there. Sad really.

My previous review complained about their policy of requiring a credit card to book a free class…read moreand my hesitance to do so. I decided on a workaround. I used a visa gift card to book my free class. And I really liked the class, they were actually doing 2 free classes at that point in time, so I liked both classes. After the second I signed up for their cheapest membership which was 4 classes/month at $59. Then they ran a thing called Hell Week, where you got a free t-shirt if you did X out of X workouts in a week, I think it was like 5 of 7. This required me to buy more classes, but I got sucked into the challenge. And it was hard, but it was good. So I bumped up to their next level, 8 classes/month for $100. So I was going about 2xs per week. I'm a 38 yr old guy who hasn't really consistently worked out since high school. I had to kind of ease into this and make sure it worked with my schedule. But the workouts worked for me. The coaches work for me. I like the motivation. I like just showing up and having someone tell me what to do. They always show modifications, and I've never had anyone make me feel weak for the size dumbell I pick up, or modified sit-ups because my back hurts. I've increased my stamina and endurance on the treadmills (when I tried running outside last summer I kept getting bad shin splints, the coaches helped me with how to work those out, but the short bursts on the treads mean I don't get the shin splints very often anyways.) I asked the Coach Theo a few weeks ago about signing up for a 5k, and he encouraged me to do so, said I'm running almost that far on the treads in a class, and that I could totally do it. So I signed up for the Reentry & Recovery Fresh Start 5k last weekend and I ended up finishing far before my goal, knowing I could have actually run a little faster, and I bewilderingly won a medal, 2nd place in my age/gender division. It was an amazing feeling. I'm feeling way more strong, fit, energized. I love that there is a kind of team mentality but that it's also about me and my goals and pushing myself and not about anyone else. It's a great way to clear my head and a great start to my day. I'm now signed up for the unlimited classes for the next 6 months and I'm going like 4-5 times per week. You do have to use one of their brand of heart monitors, there's an arm one, a chest strap that's a little cheaper, and I think they're coming out with one that communicates with the Apple Watch? You can borrow one for the free class, rent one if you want each class during the first month if you're checking it out, but it's more cost effective to buy one eventually. Because of the 30 day cancelation policy, basically anytime you decided you want to quit you'll still have to pay for 1 more month. And they also have like 10 class packs. They want you to come in and try the class and then they'll explain the contract stuff to you, but it's not super high pressure. The people are chill and cool. There's a transformation challenge thing coming up in January that involves photos and weigh-ins and cash prize for percentage of weight loss.
