This is a very attractive, small but well-filled museum and shop connected to the Crossnore Children's Academy. Even the bathroom contains attractive art objects. I was dragged there by an elderly friend, who works there as a volunteer, begging me to make a small contribution to the school through a purchase. I fully expected it to suck. Boy was I surprised!
Let's just say that I have been to more than my share of craft shows waiting patiently for women who are related to me to explore the subtleties of earrings, necklaces, sculpture, paintings and polished wood objects. So when I hear the words giclee or raku I cower in fear and prepare a backup plan of feigned illness or an emergency at work. Some men sit under a tree and pout; I know all the symptoms of a STEMI and the meaning of 'flood' and 'power outage' to the hospital where I work.
The weaver's store is set on a beautiful campus inside a very attractive building, more like Hansel and Gretel's house than the Guggenheim. I expected to see Keebler elves at the looms and running the shop. Just driving into the parking lot calmed me down.
The woven items were impressive in design and quality; all suitable gifts for a new home or handsome woman. Other artwork was similarly impressive for a favorite spot on the wall of one's home or for practical use at a dinner party. You're not going to find lawn ornaments or carved baby names on a wooden choo-choo train here.
In the end I didn't buy anything because I didn't need anything. But others in my party did and I survived and even enjoyed the visit very much! read more
