I never imagined I'd be leaving a one-star review for a funeral, but unfortunately, our experience…read morewith Father Jim at St. John's left us shocked and deeply hurt. What should have been a sacred and comforting service turned into something cold and disrespectful. He showed no effort to personalize the homily and gave the impression that we were inconveniencing his day. Worse, during a moment when a family member was doing a reading, he interrupted--not to offer support, but to move things along. There was no compassion, no warmth, and certainly no sense that this was a moment of grief for a grieving family. Funerals are hard enough. We came seeking solace and spiritual comfort, and instead left feeling dismissed and disrespected. I wouldn't wish this kind of experience on anyone. A little kindness would have gone a long way.

I usually attend St John's church when I'm visiting my parents in NJ. The parish is conveniently located close to where I usually lodge on my visits. Lakehurst is a military town, home to the former Lakehurst NAS, now renamed and part of the larger Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, and is a typical south-central New Jersey township complete with restaurants, shopping, etc. As a visitor here, I find the parish welcoming and warm. There are devotions like the Rosary, Divine Mercy chaplet, and novena prayers said before each Mass, and while the construction is modern, the architecture is not at all distracting. This attribute helps tremendously when engaging in personal prayer and meditations. The original church was built on Center Street in 1874 and now serves as the offices of the Lakehurst Historic Society. The present structure on Chestnut Street was completed in 1973. Definitely recommend St John's if you are visiting the local sites (i.e., taking a tour of the 1937 Hindenburg disaster) and need a place to worship and attend the holy sacrifice of the Mass. Mahalo nui loa and thank you for reading my review. Pax et Bonum.
