Yesterday I decided to check something else off my bucket list and set off to buy a mandolin. After doing a fair amount of research, I ended up at Mountain Music. (I live in Nashville now but did not feel like any of the shops around there would be welcoming of a newbie like myself, as most of their mando's started in figures that were WAY out of my budget). There I met Matt who took me aside and showed me every mandolin they had, even played each of them to let me hear the differences. We talked about body styles and strings. He hooked me up with a great deal on everything I needed to get me started, re-stringed and tuned my new instrument, and gave me recommendations on picks, tuners, etc. Which was great because I'm brand new to stringed instruments! All in all, these guys know how to bring in a beginner player like myself and keep me as a repeat customer. They have a fantastic return policy so even if I decide to go bigger and better, they'll accommodate! I definitely recommend checking these guys out.

Being a kid that has a real passion for music (or books or any kind of art, really) at a certain…read moreage can make the world feel like a pretty lonely place. I vividly remember being that kid at that age and how much riding my bike all the way across the town I lived in to go to the local guitar shop on a Saturday just to be in a world that gave me a sense of belonging for a few hours meant to me. Honestly, it was sustaining in a time that felt hopeless. Reason I mention this is because my wife and I stopped into Jack's a couple weeks ago and I was taken right back to that experience and I was left not only impressed with how well virtually every guitar I picked up played, but by how supportive, encouraging and kind the owner was when just such a kid was in the shop with her dad, excitedly talking about sci-fi books with him. Honestly, he was just great. When the kid and their father left the store, there was a bit of a pause and the owner said to his partner/wife "What a smart kid!". This little interaction I happened upon made me a fan for life of this store and I just wanted to share. I was that kid many years ago and I can tell you for certain that the kind of kindness and encouragement the owner offered makes a huuuuge difference in what can be a difficult period. There are other things I could mention, like how the set up on nearly every acoustic guitar they had rivalled a Taylor fresh off the rack at Gruhn's. Or how rare it is to find such a great collection of under-the-radar gems and hand made local luthier boutique in one shop. But none of that floored me the way witnessing the owner's interaction with a fellow sci-fi fan did. These are good people.

He feels at home and comfortable, his confidence is growing daily. From lessons with Kirk, mentoring from Brandon, Cole, Ryan, the amazing family that run the store. Friendly and welcoming but also really top musicians, true experts from playing in bands to engineers to editing, these guys are the real deal. He took it for about 30 minutes and hooked me up to one of their acoustic amps and the problem was solved. The battery in it was dead for one but he also addressed something else that I didn't fully comprehend. 15 minutes later he came by, I said "you fixed it man! How much?" "Eh, don't worry about it." I'll be buying a new guitar from here someday and all of my strings and other guitar needs in the meantime! Trust, this place should be your go to.
