I did not feel my Niece was learning anything as they were just playing games. My Niece is 7 years old. I know kids should have fun, but this class was all about fun and games and had no real merit or value in terms of learning anything. I don't think Judo is good for kids, I noticed also with my friend who does judo that the practicioners get Cauliflower ears also, as there is lots of rubbing around the ears.

OK, I confess, I am somewhat biased. I am a long time member of this organisation, although I…read morestarted in NZ many years ago when the earth was young. When I migrated here in 2000 I didn't join the local club for a lot of reasons, but the main one is because I lived so far away at the time. I came back recently after a 10 year absence, having toyed with a number of other martial arts over the intervening years, and I was struck immediately by how friendly, caring and competent every senior member of this club is to newcomers, even returning old broken down folks like me. Head Instructor Ino Macquaring, title Jun-Shihan, is a 6th degree black belt, and his wife Leigh, a Sensei of 4th degree (at the time of writing) are such lovely folks and dedicated karateka that this club has a total family atmosphere. Jun-Shihan can name practically every member of the club by first name, quite an achievement given the size of the organisation. The very large number of families that are members and the large number of juniors is testament to the heart of the club. The style is very traditional Japanese karate, with it's roots in Kyokoshinkai, from which it split in the mid 1970's. It has approximately 20 kata to learn for shodan and generally will take between 4 and 5 years of consistent training to achieve a 1st degree black belt. A key difference to many other Japanese karate styles is the attitude to sparring, or kumite. Safety gear is a must, and it is all about the experience, not about knocking out your opponent - although that may happen! This is born from the US HQ where, like Australia, liability and insurance is a bugger. If you are considering a martial art, look no further - that is unless you have dreams of UFC, in which case walk on by.

The teachers are exceptional, and offer helpful, one-on-one, personal assistance. My yoga instructor was Sari Redzeposki (qualified in Ki Yoga), and she was great. Her method of teaching was informative and calming, and she never made me feel embarrassed when I looked like a complete goof trying to position my body correctly. I always took the Saturday class, and it was quite busy, but not uncomfortable. Perhaps a midweek class would be quieter, if that is what you're looking for. Sinosic Perosh Martial Arts also offer training in MMA, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai Kickboxing and kids Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Although the class was advertised as "Yin Yoga", gentler and more advisable for beginners, I think it could better be described as a Hatha class aimed to advanced beginners or intermediate yogis who already have a better understanding of proper alignment. The class was held in a room at the Tamarama Surf Club, meaning that the only view I got during my workout was that of the wall in front of me, but bending like a pretzel to the sound of the Tasman Sea crushing on Tamarama Beach down below brought out in me meditative states I didn't even know existed.

Even in the group sessions they try to hone in on weaknesses (and strengths) which is a killer when you've had a few too many drinks the night before. I like them because they know their stuff. Rod and Brooke always have tips and news of the latest research findings on health and fitness - they know a bit about the fads but have enough general knowledge to give an unbiased and informed opinion on them. There are a lot of personal trainers down at Balmoral in the morning but I feel pretty confident that Evolution are the team to train will. They keep things fresh, adding new exercises and routines each week - pilates, kettle bell training, beach sprints, boxing and a range of resistance training. They're also fun and social. My sister who trains with them now goes out regularly with a bunch of women she met through the sessions.
