We booked in advance as with most old places it's on the small side, but it does have a covered beer garden for warmer days. One reason this placed gets packed out is the locally sourced Sunday roast. The meat and the veg come from within 3 miles of the pub and the gravy comes straight from the stock pot making it a real taste of Dorset. It's also very generous in portion and price. Another selling point is the friendly husband and wife team running the show. They have a warm humour and great rapport which gives the pub its homely atmosphere. It does come with a dash of eccentricity. The low original ceiling was covered in multi-coloured fairy lights and that combined with the choral music playing made it feel like eternal Christmas. I'm not complaining. I love Christmas! I'll definitely be back to taste the rest of the menu. Well not all of it at the same time, but there was certainly a Steak & Ale Pie with my name on it.

Ordered honey pot for dessert which may be one of the top desserts we've enjoyed anywhere in the world...Lava Cake @ Commanders Palace New Orleans being #1 but this was close enough to knock it off it's pedestal. The ganache filled edible clay pot with toffee crumbs, chocolate and ice cream magnificently presented and every bit as delicious as it looked. We live in the US but I know all future desserts will be graded against this one. Staff warn friendly and inviting. Hard to imagine a better pub experience anywhere.

This is a large J.D. Wetherspoon pub right across from the Portsmouth Guildhall, smack in the city…read morecentre. It has better than average decor (while remaining true to the JDW "formula") and facilities - including a lift to get wheelchair users to the bar and tables. There is also a small outside seating area, but it's right there on the pavement next to a busy street. Of course, The Isambard Kingdom Brunel (What a name for a pub!) offers the predictable food and drinks choices of Wetherspoons - but at lower prices compared to London! Expect to spend 50p or so less on a pint, and 70p-1 UKP on some of the meal deals. The regular food (served after 12 a.m.) includes the usual selection of "clubs"; that's a Wetherspoon term for specially discounted meal options on certain days. There's a steak club, a fish club, a chicken club, and of course, the sunday roast. You get the picture. OF COURSE most of the food is pre-prepared to keep costs down and the service quick (never had to wait for a meal at a Spoon for more than 15 minutes after ordering!). When there in mid-August of 2015 I was *really* hungry, so I opted for one of their premium meals, so to speak: the 14 OZ rump steak, plus the UKP 1.99 extra for six battered onion rings and a peppercorn sauce. The steak that arrived was a big rump indeed, and perfectly cooked to order ("rare" in my case) - also of good quality, as were the chips. See the photo - if that isn't mouthwatering, I don't know what is. An 8 OZ rump of similar quality would cost you more anywhere else! Served by particularly friendly waitress. The bar staff, too, was friendly and helpful. Not a given at every Spoon, I'd have to say. The real ales are of good quality, well maintained, and not too expensive (UKP 2.45 for a guest ale - try to get that at ANY non-Spoon pub!) - International lagers that can cost you 4-5 quid or more elsewhere are at least 50p cheaper here, too. And, unlike many of those oh-so-fancy places or hippie watering holes will not have the RIGHT, branded glass for *any* standard lager or ale - the Spoon has them! For many beer drinkers, that's just great. I was there on a Saturday afternoon, so it really wasn't busy at all. But given the prime location near Guildhall and the shopping area I suspect that, like all the other Spoons I've visited those past few years, it will probably be packed on evenings during the week. So, apart from the rather bizarre moniker, this is another perfectly solid and wholly recommendable JDW pub.

It actually took a few tries before we could even get in to try this as it was so busy and there was absolutely nowhere to sit. We actually found the Curry Night to be rather disappointing, as being people who usually enjoy good curries, we found the trays of provided food to be extremely bland and mainly just sauce. It tasted like it was pre-packed just straight out of a jar, heat and serve. Given the difficulty in getting in here we had high expectations and so we left genuinely disappointed with the Curry Night. It's not a bad pub the rest of the week, and delivers exactly what you'd expect from a local traditional public house, it's just a shame the Curry Night was a let down. It must really appeal to some less adventurous people though.

There is some street parking nearby though. The Cow has one Michelin star! Quite a coup! However my main course of fish pie was poorly presented and the accompanying vegetables were soft and the portion was small. The pie itself was tasty but the whole experience was let down by the poor presentation. The meals of others in my party looked good, especially burgers and steaks - if I go back I'll be sticking to those.

And on every day of the week you can get a specific dish for a fiver as well, ranging from Fish and Chips to Lasagna and Risotto. The cheeseburger tasted a bit microwaved, unfortunately but the chips were solid and service was quick. Clientele ranges from those these for a couple pints and the footie to groups of 20 year olds taking advantage of the cheap food and drinks.
