They are compassionate, kind, respectful of your loved ones, and they gently walk you through the selection process. They realize you're numb from grief and no one is ever ready for this process in our lives. Conkle's interior remains as it has been for years but is clean, well maintained and cared for even though the drapes are certainly out of style. I know! Who's looking at the drapes at a time like this? The chapels are large and can be increased or decreased as necessary. They try to accommodate every person's budget and are helpful even after the service when you need death certificates or have questions. One additional thought is many restaurants are located within walking distance of Conkles in Speedway for those who spend hours supporting the family. This was brought to my attention and much appreciated for those assisting the family and friends.

I didn't find it and found out this trip she is in Mendon Cemetery, Then I found out my other set of maternal great grandparents are buried here. My mother loved both of her grandmothers and named me after both of them. In this cemetery is my great-grandmother Louella, nicknamed Lou, from whence the second half of my name comes, so it was very poignant to be standing in front of her grave, knowing I was her namesake. I don't know if I have ever been here before, but if so it was when I was too young to understand who they were. I'm glad I now know where they are so I can visit them when I am in town.

I will confess that I'm not particularly fond of reviewing historical landmarks or public art,…read morethough there are certainly places that possess an allure that is undeniable and prove themselves to be worthy of special mention. Spring Valley Cemetery is such a place. Located on the grounds of what used to be Fort Benjamin Harrison, Spring Valley Cemetery actually preceded the military installation and maintained its status as a cemetery when the original farmer who owned the land simply refused to sell it. The Army tried several times to have the property condemned and relocated yet failed. Now, the military installation is gone and the cemetery remains. I love stories like that. The first burial ground in Lawrence Township, Spring Valley Cemetery has also been known as Thomas Silvey Cemetery, its original name, along with Reddick Farm Cemetery, Joshua Reddick Cemetery, and even Fort Harrison Cemetery. This is one of those "blink and you'll miss it cemeteries, though interestingly enough it continues to be considered an active cemetery with a cemetery association secretary who is located in Sheridan, Indiana. I tried without success to locate any type of official website or contact information for the cemetery - while it is listed in the cemetery database run by the State of Indiana, only the individual's name is listed as a contact. Spring Valley Cemetery is fairly easily accessible, though you have to be looking for the entryway. As someone in a wheelchair, I'll note that it's an older cemetery and if you want to wheel around it you need to probably have someone with you as it's not what I'd call an easily accessible cemetery. It's relatively flat in terms of surfaces, so it's possible. As most of the graves in the cemetery are older, the cemetery association's funds are limited and even 20 years ago the association was concerned about future maintenance. Geocachers should note that there's a geocache located in the grounds of the cemetery. Because it's a seldom used, relatively isolated spot you can pretty much search without being bothered other than the fact that you're relatively close to the Lawrence Police Department and City Hall. Fascinating facts include that at least one Revolutionary War veteran is buried here, a Reddick family member, though there's some doubt as to whether the grave actually includes his remains. There are also at least 15 Civil War veterans here. There are quite a few grave markers that are so old the ability to read them has long since faded away. It's not always known that around the turn of the 20th century that this area of Lawrence Township was actually comprised of 5 small towns. Some of the names have stuck. For example, Castleton actually really was a small town even back then. Spring Valley, with about 25 families, didn't even qualify as a small town. It was more like a neighborhood, though a fairly well functioning one. I've always loved older cemeteries. I find them fascinating and sad and mysterious and peaceful. In this time of quarantining, I finally took the time to really explore this one and really fell in love with it so much that I explored its history and, as a result, learned much more about an area that is fairly close to my home. If you're stopping by Fort Ben or Culver's or Cafe Audrey or any other of the fine restaurants or attractions around here, check out Spring Valley Cemetery and learn a bit about the history of this area and its people.

Hurlock cemetery is a pretty little place. It is not very full, maybe 50 graves spread out over the…read moregrassy expanse, so if you're looking for a name you have to do a bit of walking over hilly terrain. I found it a bit difficult to find even though I had directions from my GPS. I drove past it the first time, not because I couldn't see it but because there was a car pushing me from behind and I couldn't figure out where I was supposed to park to go in it. When I doubled back I circled around behind it but that was just a neighborhood full of houses and I didn't see any access to the cemetery from the back or either side. I came back out in front and with no cars on the road I was able to slow down and pull into the grassy area in front of the cemetery fence. I never did see a sign indicating the name of the cemetery like I have seen at other cemeteries I have visited on this trip. I did find the grave of my great great grandparents. If there are any other relatives here I don't know about it. I walked up and down the cemetery and got a few mosquito bites for my trouble in spite of putting on repellent but never did see any other names that looked like they might belong to my ancestors. Hopefully the next time I will be able to find it more easily. It isn't all that far from the Crown Land Cemetery where I have other ancestors buried, so at least it is convenient once you know where it is.

It was somber and very personal so I see why someone would choose to go this route. It opened my eyes to a different view of the traditional process of a funeral.
