They are compassionate, kind, respectful of your loved ones, and they gently walk you through the selection process. They realize you're numb from grief and no one is ever ready for this process in our lives. Conkle's interior remains as it has been for years but is clean, well maintained and cared for even though the drapes are certainly out of style. I know! Who's looking at the drapes at a time like this? The chapels are large and can be increased or decreased as necessary. They try to accommodate every person's budget and are helpful even after the service when you need death certificates or have questions. One additional thought is many restaurants are located within walking distance of Conkles in Speedway for those who spend hours supporting the family. This was brought to my attention and much appreciated for those assisting the family and friends.

This is a very small but nice memorial park located of the Central Green in front of Fisher's City…read moreHall. It was built in 2011 and is a memorial that features a monument dedicated to those who have served in the armed forces and is the home to our annual Memorial Ceremony. Around the base of the monument you will find the logos of all the uniformed services and Fisher's Police and Fire Departments. They each lead to one of the points on the six-point star that the monument sits on. There are benches in the area for visitors to sit and reflect. The monument itself has different sized granite slabs with stars on the and the tallest one having an eagle on top of it and the inscription, "Liberty Plaza, Proclaim Liberty Throughout the Land, Unto All the Inhabitants Thereof." The monument sits in a functional fountain, which is laid upon the six point star. The city holds its annual Memorial and Veterans Day ceremonies here. There is a decent amount of free parking on streets near the Plaza and there is a parking garage nearby. This place is very well maintained and nicely done. This is a good stop to make if you are in the area, but I would probably not make it a destination stop. So, to all the veterans and public servants out there, thank you for your service.

Plots to Plates Organic Community Garden is located on the grounds of Carmel Middle School. Not…read moregonna lie: I didn't know this existed until a couple of months ago when my 3rd grader had a field trip here and I was one of the parent helpers. I arrived at the garden and was like, "What the heck? I've been to this school multiple times and I never saw this entire garden ecosystem flourishing here?" But yeah, there's a community garden at the back of Carmel Middle School! So good. To get to the garden, use the entrance by the tennis courts and then drive all the way back to the woods. This community garden is used often in the spring for Carmel Clay school field trips, but it's also used by the community as a place to plant and harvest produce. According to the website, the space is intended for public gardening, education and community fellowship. You can apply for one of the 123 garden plots available to the general public and schools. Garden plots are 4 feet by 15 feet. There is usually a waitlist for these garden plots, but you can get on the waitlist by visiting the website. Spots usually open at the beginning of the year. This is a very tidy and nice community garden, and you can tell that the people who use it love it and take care of it. There's a designated space for compost, which is neat. There's also a small playground at the garden, which is nice for people who visit with children: the kids can play while and adult gardens.

This was my first visit to the Veteran's Memorial Plaza. Indianapolis hosts numerous war related…read morememorials, probably more than any other city. The Obelisk is the focal point of the Plaza. The Plaza honors all Indiana veterans from the Revolutionary War to present. The Obelisk and surrounding fountain were designed by the renown artist, Henry Hering in the 1930's. The Obelisk honors Hoosiers who served on land sea and sky as well as family members who waited. The resemblance of the Obelisk to the Washington Monument symbolizes hope and inspiration according to the plaque. The bronze panels at the base of the Obelisk, sculpted by Hering, represent law, science, religion and education. State flags stand together on one side of the obelisk and other monuments for specific wars stand throughout the plaza. There are plaques on each side of the quadrant for a self guided tour, but they are faded and somewhat difficult to read. The Plaza is lovely on a clear day with wide sidewalks and lots of green space. There is metered street parking around the park. Restrooms are available in the nearby War Memorial. The plaza is opened from 7:00 am - 11:00 pm. And there is no fee to enter.

The center piece of the plaza is a 100' tall Obelisk fountain in the center of the park. The Obelisk (tall pointy thing) represents the hopes and aspirations of the nation. The bronze tablets at its base represent the four fundamentals upon which our nation's hopes are founded: law, science, religion and education. There are benches and picnic tables that you can hang out at in the plaza. There is also shade and grassy areas. Special events are hosted here on occasion. Fun facts: It was completed in 1930. The Plaza was first known as Obelisk Square. Originally, the plaza was almost completely paved.

It was somber and very personal so I see why someone would choose to go this route. It opened my eyes to a different view of the traditional process of a funeral. Worst experience ever!!! We took our beloved dog to be cremated and were promised a paw print and a…read morenice box for him as well as a cremation certificate. We received no certificate and he was returned in a flimsy cardboard box and the paw print did not even look like a paw print and was on the back of another business' post it note not even on a plain piece of paper or something pretty and nice. When asked about the paw print they stated our dog "was uncooperative". We were then told they never provide boxes other than the cardboard and implied we were lying. They were "gracious enough" (their words) take off $50 from the fee but were very rude and told us when they received our dog he was "in bad shape" implying rigor I assume but he was literally dropped off within 20 mins of passing. DO NOT go here for your fur babies as they do not seem to care how they treat them. They were unprofessional and I will never return there again!!

This is a small memorial dedicated to our Fallen Hoosier Heroes who gave the ultimate sacrifice…read moreafter 9/11 as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. It is the brainchild of Don and Carol Peed and is a beautiful memorial and is an excellent honor to those heroes. The memorial honors more than 200 local herons and is maintained by Vietnam veteran and local groundskeeper, Dennis Zavada. You will find it near Westfield High School, just outside of downtown Westfield. The memorial was dedicated in 2009 and consists of plaques with the name of each honored soldier, where they were from and when they died. Originally the memorial started with white crosses vice the plaques. There is also flagpoles with flags representing each branch of service behind an American flag, a Family Member Military Service Flag, and a POW/MIA flag. There is also some granite and stone plaques that are dedicated to gold star families, and instrumental people that made the memorial possible. You will also find brick pavers that are dedicated to special people, with lots of room for expansion. The memorial is very well maintained and looks awesome. I reminds me of something that you would see at the Arlington National Cemetery. It grabbed my attention as I was driving down the road. There is free street parking available right in front of the memorial and it is easy to get to. The memorial's first cross was in memory of Jeanette Winters, a Marines Corps sergeant who was killed in 2002. and the last memorial belongs to U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. Humberto Sanchez who was one of 13 American service members killed in August in an attack on the airport in Kahul, Afghanistan as the US was exiting the war in 2021. It is amazing the impact that only a few people can make. This memorial is managed primarily by two people with support from local veteran's groups. The Memorial plays host to a Memorial Day service each year that is organized by the Carmel VFW and the American Legion. It is well attended. I love we a community puts something together to honor anyone that served, especially when it is as well done as this memorial. This is definitely worth a visit but I would make it part of a larger itinerary with attractions such as Big Hoffas, the Anti-slavery Cemetery, or nearby Asa Bales Park.
