No food and there were kids in there (as most Irish pubs do), but just early...say before 7. Stop in and have a few if your ever up in N.E. Ireland! As we explored the city and its rich and rocky history, we decided to visit the Bogside neighborhood and boy are we glad we walked into the Bogside Inn! The owner, Shane (sp?) and a good group of his friends occupied the stools and tables while the soccer match and horse races were on. They were so friendly and welcoming to us as we sipped on some delicious pints of Guinness (and some Jameson, too!). Most everyone in the bar took the time to come over and chat with us, ask us about our holiday in Ireland and tell us about Derry. They were a fun, cheery, and boisterous bunch! This was definitely one of our best nights in Ireland. If you're visiting Derry, Bogside Inn is a must!

The Harp was a lovely spot in between Dungloe Bar and a couple of other shops on the steep slope of Waterloo Street. We walked inside and grabbed a seat at one of the narrow and cozy window-front tables -- pressed against the front door entrance. We enjoyed our time there in this little pub, enjoying pours of various single-pot whiskey and other whiskey drinks -- specifically those mixed with ginger ale. I wished we could have stayed longer, but because we were trying to fit as many places to visit during our time in Derry, we had to move on after a couple of drinks. Still, we loved the vibes at this pub, which embodies what you want in a pub when visiting from the states -- small, cozy, authentic, and genuine.

Beautifully picturesque, with lots of 17th & 18th century buildings, it's situated at the point where the mouth of the River Lennon, flows into Lough Swilly, and is around 12km northeast of Letterkenny. The BBC filmed the 1995 television production The Hanging Gale here, set during the 1846 famine, indeed there are many pictures of the filming inside this exceptionally cosy pub. The nearby Bridge Bar, also great, may be the place most notable for live music, but if you're after the true craic in a pub from old, old Ireland, then this is the place to come. From outside, with it's thatched roof, it looks like a classic model for one of those typically Irish, turf-burning little model houses, or the popular subject for a tourist post card, but there is nothing phony in here. A genuine warmth permeates throughout, and in what I found without exception was a hugely sociable town, where literally everyone I encountered gave me a cheery greeting, and meant it, the welcome here was exceptional. Ramelton is a must-visit if you're in County Donegal, and Conway's would be worth coming this way for alone. The beers good too!

Tracys Bar was that first pub that we frequented on the corner of Waterloo Place and Waterloo Street -- located at the bottom of a steep hill that begins the latter. The stay was certainly a good one as we went into the traditional pub and enjoyed some drinks. While we only stayed for one drink, we enjoyed ourselves in one of the booths by the front door with the bar right across from us. Sipping on a pour of The Quiet Man Irish Whiskey, I felt very at ease and relaxed and could have probably stayed for a little longer, but there were other pubs we wanted to check out. We will definitely return when we are back in Derry.

Probably shouldn't have ordered a Guinness at that time; likely my fault in retrospect. There was definitely a lot of good craic here, and it looks like everyone was having a grand time. 5 stars for the Irish music…read more The whiskeys they poured at Peadar O'Donnels were probably the smallest I've had in the UK, and I had plenty of whiskeys during me 3+ weeks traveling there. The sign on the wall, if it was to be believed, made it seem like they were pouring between 18-20ml. Every other bar I had been to either used a 25ml measuring cup or the rare 35ml measuring cup (THE CEILIDH PLACE in Ullapool stands out in my mind as giving out 35ml), but this guy just poured from the bottle into the glass, and indeed it did seem a very wee dram. :) My wife got a beer though, and that was of a normal size. :) If you don't care about the music, I am sure there are plenty of other bars in Derry that can give you a good wee drink.
