Shhh.. don't tell anyone. There isn't going to be a 10 carat ruby/sapphire/diamond hidden in that bucket of dirt. But nothing is more fun than watching little kids try so hard to find one, especially in a place with all the COVID precautions needed to keep everyone safe. We had a fantastic time at Crystal Mountain. The "mine" is well set up with all sorts of crystals and stones on display and available for purchase. On the right side of the shop is a sluice that runs roughly 30 feet. If you head into the back of the mine, you will see fossils and other unusual finds. After walking around a bit, we decided to go with the green bucket to split between our two girls and used an online coupon to save a few bucks on it. The green bucket comes with all those little extras, including a geode, that kids find so important. The very kind and well informed owner/manager of Crystal Mine carried our bucket to the sluice and showed our girls how to find those special stones. He gave us several bags to hold their treasures and then left us to 'mine' for gems. Our girls cried out over every little find. They especially loved anything quartz. The owner came to check on us and showed the girls how to tell what kinds of gems they were finding. We filled up four bags with various kinds of stones including a huge geode. Once the bucket was empty, our girls looked over the store and the owner helped them make their own necklaces. We appreciated how mindful he was of expense. Each one cost just $6 when all was said and done and yet he made our girls feel as if they were wearing Cartier. The best moment came when he cracked their geode. In an unexpected bit of good luck in rotten 2020, the big geode turned out to be two geodes. Each one cracked to reveal a cavern of crystals and our girls were simply thrilled. The owner wrapped each one in paper so they could take their geodes home. Our kids had such a good time in this gem mine. It filled them with wonder, something I want for them every day. Much of the credit goes to the owner/manager. He made every moment into an experience... even if we didn't find that 10 carat sapphire. read more

We were in Brevard this past weekend and our Granddaughter wanted to go mining. Crystal Mountain is an indoor facility with a mining sluice along the side wall. They are "social distancing" and the length of the sluice allows for several guests at one time. We did the small bucket and she still walked away with a good size bag of rocks. She plans to tumble them. The staff is very friendly and there are a lot of gifts and trinkets to browse through while your miner is at work. read more

Fun place to spend a little time on a Saturday afternoon. It's indoor mining and lots of fun for kids. Great location. We bought the smaller bucket which was just right to have a good experience. What a fun little activity right on the main street! Staff was so knowledgeable and helpful that it really added to the fun of sifting through dirt and collecting little rocks and gems. We found some really cool looking stuff and while I just thought, 'hey cool rock' the guy working there was more than eager to tell us all about them, where they come from and what they're used for. What? Super cool! I really didn't know what to expect since the last time I did something like this I was a little kid but I had a blast and think this place would be a great stop for couples out for the day or families looking for a group activity. 5 out of 5! We had a great visit on Monday, March 15. Holden helped us from the time we walked in the door until we left. His customer service skills were amazing!! He definitely went above and beyond to make our visit a great one. After my granddaughter finished mining, he took the time to explain every gem she found!! This place is pretty big and set up nicely. We've been twice and the gentleman at the counter is always so nice and personable I almost feel like swinging by just to see him. My 6 year old daughter had been dying to going gem mining. Reluctantly I agreed to take her after warning her she might not find much. As a child we'd both been gem mining elsewhere and only found slivers of gems for $40 plus dollars a bucket. I bought the $10 kids bucket after the woman (sorry I didn't catch her name) at the counter suggested that would be more than enough. There were pretty large chunks of crystals in this bucket and numerous ones. Nearly every scoop of dirt had several gems in it. My daughter was absolutely delighted and I was thrilled with how great of an experience this was for her. We will definitely be back. The gentlemen working there are so knowledgeable and helpful. They were engaged with each and every person that came in the door no matter how busy they were. My son made a special connection with Holden who works there. Holden took the time to talk to my son about some issues we have been having at home and gave him some insight that my son really valued . He really he made our visit so amazing that we have been back to visit every time we are in the area. This place was on our weekend itinerary, and one of our only activities that wasn't canceled for rain. We bought a $20 bucket (pictured is only about 1/5 of the gems that came out of it). We ended up with about two and a half sandwich bags of gemstones. The process was fun, and we got a lot of very pretty gems. The staff was super friendly and helpful. This would definitely be a lot of fun with kids (or ya know, without kids we still had a nice time). We drove 2 hours from our Airbnb cabin to visit this business. The cold weather temps in the middle of December caused most gem mine locals to close but lucky for us, this one is indoors! It ended up being one of our favorite adventures! We had a blast, our kids would have kept going but we stopped at 2 - 5 gallon buckets. The young man that was there on the Sunday we stopped in was one of the best parts of our time there. He was such a joy to be around, helpful and the kids appreciated his knowledge. We found rubies, emeralds, sapphires, copper, iron, fossils, rose quartz, etc. etc and two softball size geodes that were packed full of crystals. The place was beautiful, well maintained, colorful, clean and fun. So happy we made the drive. read more

What a great place for the kids to find some really cool gems. We got a big green bucket for 2 kids to share and my son even found a large geode that they cut open for us. I'm a local and Crystal Mountain is my favorite store in Brevard! They have AMAZING specimens that seem to change every time I go in. Their prices are very reasonable, especially compared to other rock shops around like those in Asheville. As for the gem mining, its a total blast! It doesn't matter how old you are, it's so much fun. I bring all my family and friends gem mining when they visit, and everyone loves it. The owner Chris is super knowledgeable and very friendly. He took the time to go through our gems and tell us their names and lots of fun facts about them! Also the flume is totally inside so I still get to bring friends gem mining even in the winter, a great way to get out of the cold!
