My husband and I took the L train during our weeklong stay in Chicago. Belmont is an above ground train station where the Red, Brown, and Purple lines run. It's a nice train station that is situated in an energetic, walkable neighborhood. We had spent the afternoon exploring Lakeview, and were heading back to our hotel near Michigan Ave. We caught the Red line from here and got back to River East. Clean station and well-monitored. I mean... seating is limited at virtually all El stations. However, for one that has the space, and three lines running through it, seating for more than four persons per direction would be welcome. Also, overhead heating is opposite the benches, and thus also very limited. Otherwise, Belmont is great! It is extremely well lit, easy to navigate, wider than the average El station, and fully accessible. There is sufficient cover from rain, and ample signage on upcoming departures/wait times. Now, while as many of its colleagues, it too could benefit from an extremely thorough pressure washing, the station is generally clean and void of debris. Finally, while I don't frequent Belmont after midnight, the times I've been here during the day or late evening, I've not encountered any unsavory characters. Thus, while not immune from some problems and quirks, Belmont is one of the better stations on the El. read more

CTA has an L station on Belmont. It provides fast access to Lincoln Park. Such a big ass station in a happening area, and there's lots of bars and restaurants. Good as far as things like being safe and clean. There's also lots of opportunities to transfer between a few Lines. Big station with a lot going on in and around here. It serves the Brown, Purple, and Red Lines. There's usually a train coming within a few minutes. Around here are a ton of bars and restaurants just outside of it. There's a location of Devil Dawgs, and some great ethnic places like 11 Degrees North. Easy to find something for everyone. It's at the intersection of Belmont and Sheffield. Get off here to avoid the Wrigley chaos. The one thing unavoidable is the piss smell. Even though it's outside, the air doesn't help. There's a few areas around the benches and stairs that always look wet, so avoid sitting or even touching anything if you can help it. Good as far as getting around at stations go. It's busy so it's mostly safe and there's lots of places to eat around it. There's never a really long wait for trains. read more

Hub train station. Love it or hate it but I find myself stopping in often. Great stop for local theater and quick eats. Music and some last minute party supplies. I honestly like to get off here to go to Wrigley Field just I could start at the beginning of the gauntlet of themed bars starting two blocks North on Clark. Addison just gets overwhelming during games and events. Late nights can sometimes be a fright. Gets a bit like Gremlins after midnight. But the police are responsive just being next to the Addison station. read more

"Geez, I don't know what color to pick! Brown is so 2020 and I hate the way Purple looks on me, OMG! Let's go with Red!" Belmont station has you covered. It's a decent place to transfer, embark or disembark, whether you're into the whole bark thing or are just barking mad. It's a plain station, but more modern. It has an elevator, which may or may not have a person just hanging out in there for the whole night in their own mumbley world while they're on some unknown high (eek!). Stairs look relatively clean and climbable. Platforms are nice enough. I feel like it should get an extra star for the area and somewhat sleek feel, but Belmont just isn't doing it for me. Omg it's raining CTAs and DGOs right now, it's making my dylsexia come out really dab! CTA Belmont is kind of a scary place. This is the stop where you get off if you're gay on a Friday or Saturday night - or perhaps even if you're straight and want to have some fun. If you're bisexual then I guess you can just go anywhere you want. Anyway there are lots of drug dealers and freaky people hanging out under this bridge and nearby and when you get off the train or park nearby you're going to probably encounter them especially at night. In the daytime it's a little bit more family-friendly. On the plus side it's good to have a stop right next to where all the action is, and I do like some of the cool sculptures that they have around here which really gives this station some serious character. read more

The Red Line was my favorite line of all of the lines available in Chicago. It's basically running all night long. It takes me North and South, but be careful, don't go past Sox after 2 am... The place we were staying at was minutes from this stop and it was able to take you anywhere in town. LOVE IT! Why are the stupid trains in Houston the ground?! read more

Pretty big fan of the CTA and how it makes getting around the city pretty easy. This Belmont stop can be rather busy and hectic so PAY ATTENTION to what train you are getting on. A transfer can be as easy as walking across the platform to another train and it still amazes me that the trains work with similar paths... [good signaling and switches]. I did almost get onto a purple line train the other night, but luckily the announcement on the train said their end destination and I figured it out in time to step off of the train. Overall the platform is kept fairly tidy for the amount of traffic it gets during the day. read more

The remodeling of this station turned out fantastic. It's much larger, more efficient and easier to get around. The mosaics . . . maybe I'm biased because my friend, Chicago artist David Csicsko, designed them? No, I am not. While they're not museum-quality, they are fantastic, fun, public art. They make this station . . . dare I say it? A happy place to be. If I Ran the CTA, I'd assign an artist to each stop. The escalators are finally done. I walked thru here last week and saw a guy and his cute son running down the escalator in the opposite direction. They were giggling so much I thought they'd gasp for breath and wet themselves. It cracked me up. Yep. It's the mosaics in this cool station that make you feel whimsical and giddy.Wow, just wait till spring! read more

Spacious and relatively clean. Easy access from red line to brown line without getting off the platform.

It's hard to get too excited about an L stop. But let me try to give you the scoop. The Belmont stop on the Red line is pretty nice as far as L stops go. There is lots of space and the area is clean and feels safe. Plenty of turnstiles on the south side of the street. Only two on the north side. So if it's rush hour, head south. Busses and trains intersect nicely here. And there is plenty of cover if it's raining. The Red, Brown and Purple lines all intersect here, as does the route 77 bus. So, you shouldn't be stranded. There are a few homeless and panhandlers here, but generally not too bad. As for businesses near by, you are set. Great food, great drinks and even good entertainment. I won't detail them out, after all, you have Yelp. But let's just say you won't have a problem finding something nearby. Even the lake is just a 10-15 min walk away. All-in-all, I like this stop. read more

The previously older and dreary stop, a major thoroughfare for the younger culture in the city, is now revamped with multiple ramps, shiny new fun tile art, a large central space, modern digital signage, and good lighting. Back when the Brown Line went through extensive renovation going down to three tracks, the Belmont train station looked like a scene from some post-apocalyptic nightmare. Late night three track operation also made waiting a genuine pain in the you know what. Once all the scaffolding was removed, sawdust swept away, and concrete hardened, we're left with one of Chicago's most beautiful train stations. Walking in, you'll feel some space even in the dead of rush hour as the walkways have been dramatically expanded. You can now enter and exit from both sides of Belmont and there are plenty of escalators and elevators. Why is the Belmont stop so important? Being a connector for the Red, Brown, and Purple Lines, there are probably tens of thousands of people who use this train stop on a daily basis. I usually like to get off my train and walk four blocks up to Wrigley Field and like the fact that when I'm waiting for the train, there is now an electronic sign with approximate ETAs. Yep the Belmont train station does have post-Cubs traffic, plenty of wild people from Boystown nearby as well as a hell of a lot of people during rush hour. I still like this train station since it almost seems like the center of the north side. Good food abound in the surrounding neighborhood and a stone's step away from Wrigleyville. I just let 4 red line trains go by before getting on one just in time to let me walk in the doors at work at 9:02. Getting on these piss smelling cattle cars has struck my last nerve. I have heightened anxiety lately with chest pressure and stomach pain. Maybe it's that I've had enough of standing so disgustingly close to strangers that I hear their breathing and smell their stale coffee cigarette breath at 8:30am. Maybe it's that the operators run the heat on these trains while we are in our winter coats to the point that I have to wipe the sweat off my brow once I finally arrive to the loop. Or maybe it's the fact that it almost always smells like urine or hamsters, or both. I guess it's only $2.25 a ride which is why it's like traveling on the last frontier in a covered wagon with a bunch of sad looking people who undoubtedly feel the same way I do. read more

Okay, I have now seen at least 4 people eat it at the new Belmont CTA Red/Brown/Purple line stop. I was so excited when the renovations were complete -- I mean, they have an entrance on both the north and south side of Belmont now, AND the Belmont buses actually stop directly in front of the station. Perfect. But what on earth were they thinking when the put down the tiles? This is Chicago! We have snow, and rain, and inclement weather! Putting down slippery ass tiles in a station where people are often running to catch a train doesn't make any sense! Even without running, if these tiles are remotely damp, you are likely to fall. I saw some poor older couple hit the ground HARD as a result of just trying to walk timidly across these tiles. It looks pretty, but was a complete and utter waste of money. Why didn't they just pour concrete like at all the other stations? The CTA has a budget deficit and yet instead of installing sensible entrances to public transportation, they're spending $$ on installing slippery tiles and cutting service in the middle of winter? In the past year, I've seen: * A man, drunk beyond his means, fall onto the train tracks, and live to tell the tale. *Countless transvestites. *Drug deals go down right at the train station *A drunk frat boy trying to get into the train station without a shirt, holding a beer, and a blow up doll at 5am. This has been my jumping-off point for the past 7 months, and it has served me well. Cars be damned. I only have one complaint about the renovation, and it's kind of a big one. The black faux-marble floor at the bottom of the stairs is AS SLICK AS ICE when wet. I've slipped and nearly fallen about 5 times now (sober). Granted, my cowboy boots don't have a ton of traction, but you aren't going to pry those off my feet anytime soon. I really don't know how these things go overlooked during the design. I'm really not a huge fan of this stop. It's always swamped and I always feel like there is one purple line for every 15 brown lines. This infuriated me when I lived in Evanston. Is it me or does it always smell like urine on the platform?!? read more

So the Brown Line (the other B-Line) is fine, especially from Belmont. When this was my stop and my means of transportation, I had a 67% chance of securing a seat. Otherwise, I had trixies and dapper dans flapping Red Eyes in my face, as I stood holding on for my life. Is the RedEye news really that interesting? I stop through here often either heading down Belmont or switching to the red line. Coming back from the Sox game tonight, I look up at the time signs and notice a huge spider web with a huge spider smack in the middle of it. I walk to the other side of the platform and there are more webs with more creepy spiders in them. Are these webs left alone because spiders eat bugs? Who knows but it creeps me out. Now I'm afraid to do anything but pace while waiting in case one of these bad boys drops into my hair. Eeeeeek! Otherwise, a good stop and better for transferring than Fullerton. read more

The Belmont stop is kind of like my garage, since I don't drive, so of course I love it. And it's an integral part of the neighborhood. I love that it's in the middle of a lot of activity. Many places in Chicago, you have to choose whether you want to live closer to the train, or closer to the commercial activity -- but at Belmont it's in the same place, which is the way it should be. read more

It's no fun having your car in the shop and being on the redline from the south end through the north end at rush hour. My tip: avoid it.

This is one of the nicest Red Line/Brown Line/Purple Line stops. It provides easy access from either side of Belmont and you can get in and out fast. The monitors that show train times are usually working and the new ad display screens are nice to look at. read more

I have always thought - and I think it is true - that this is the stop where you want to see all the pretty folks.

The Belmont stop is my preferred stop for switching between Brown and Red (and Purple, if I happen to need that one). It's much better than Fullerton simply because there are fewer stops in between. I mean, sure, Diversey is closed right now, so Wellington is the only intermediate stop at the moment, but once the construction is done, you save two unnecessary stops in the Brown/Red transition. read more

This is the stop before the Addison stop on your way to Wrigleyville. If you know where you are going it may be better to get off here in order to avoid the large crowds. This stop is just a 5-10 minute walk north to all the hot spots in the Wrigley area. read more

Even though I have seen three red line trains go by when I want a brown, I love this stop for its perfect location and the number of different routes that pass through it. It's well-lit, and a breeze to get in and out. Props to that CTA employee for letting me go up without paying with my old folks were visiting. I had to help them carry their suitcases down the stairs, and I didn't expect to be let up without paying, so that was a nice plus. read more
