Since I fall in the second group for Edinburgh, I can say that I was at first a little bit confused and slightly lost. That cleared up very quickly once I was directed to the Lothian office near Waverley Bridge. A friendly and helpful clerk (who must deal with people like me day-in and day-out) was able to explain the day ticket (£3? All day? Yes.) and provide me with a map of the bus routes. Five minutes later, I was waiting at my stop and five minutes after that, I was in the front row of a double-decker on the way to my destination. The bus ticket is surprisingly simple and very clever. I purchased three, as I'm here three days. Each one has a series of scratch offs for the day, month and year. You just scratch off the right date and you're good to go. Nice. The buses I've ridden have been clean and prompt. While the ride may be speedy, the roads are a little bumpy. I think my driver yesterday actually missed one of the drains! They also have an iPhone app (jeez, there's an app for everything!) so you can find the nearest stop and when the bus is due to arrive.

Or if you're in Edinburgh for more than a few days, consider one of the weekly/monthly/annual passes. Yes, they accept credit cards. Even the swipe and sign ones we Americans carry. And yes, they spoke English that was clear enough for me, a Yank, to understand. :)

One of my favourite things about Edinburgh is Lothian Buses. The bus services that they run across…read morethe city are unmatched, and it is one of the best bus providers that I have come across in the UK. They have three city centre travel shops, which provide information about all of the services that they offer, and I visited the one on Waverley Bridge. I went in as I needed to purchase a Ridacard - a card which you can pay for a period of time, whether it is a week, month, or year and get unlimited travel on their buses during this period. Staff were quick and efficient in providing me with the form I needed to fill, taking a photo for the card there and then, and producing the card itself. All in all, the process must have taken around 10 minutes. The shop is well stocked with timetables and all of the information you could possibly need for bus travel in and around Edinburgh. There was also a selection of information for tourists, and during the time I was there, a number of tourists came in asking for directions, which the staff were happy to provide. This travel shop is a great reflection of a superb bus company. Once the trams are up and running, they will be able to add another string to what is already a pretty large bow.

Lothian Buses replaced East Lothian's First bus services with a new company called East Coast…read more There seems to be a lot more buses now and they are more comfortable with better value for money. As they are part of TfE, you can buy something called a County Plus day ticket which gives you unlimited access to their services, Lothian daytime services and all tram stops except the airport. You can also upgrade to the Network day ticket which is the same as County Plus but you can get to the airport by tram, and you can access Airlink and Skylink. Since you can use all of Edinburgh's transport with these deals, it is much better than what First was. Getting from Dunbar to Edinburgh only costs £5.60 for a return - by train it would cost £11. Although it takes longer, it is much better value. I now like buses! I used to be quite doubtful but now I am a fan.

Its absolutely beautiful and the stops are all for the perfect amount of time. I also want to give a huge shoutout to our tour guide Aaron (pronounced "are-rin"), who was outstanding: not only with the amount of relevant history he provided on Scotland, but great driving, and even humor! It was also very cool to learn that he is a native Gaelic speaker as well, which made the experience feel that much more authentic. If I had to name just one very SMALL criticism - the coach seats do not have a lot of space, so if you are north of 6'1" (like myself) prepare to have your legs be a wee bit squished! Overall an excellent day I would do again!

For a potential customer trying to book, he chose rudeness and unprofessional behavior. His own words prove to him to be unworthy of your business.

Dear Prentice Westwood, I am writing to you to make a complaint following my booking of your services for a trip to Manchester. I am a member of the Heriot-Watt Chemical Engineering Society who booked your coach service on the 15th and 17th of February. I am utterly appalled by the sheer lack of professionalism which Mr Cowie (our coach driver) exhibited during this trip. His behaviour ruined the trip that we have worked very hard to fundraise for a year and I think it is a disgrace that Prentice Westwood would provide this kind of service to their customers. Throughout the trip Mr Cowie maintained an abysmal attitude towards the members of the coach. This began right from the offset when Mr Cowie was extremely rude and disrespectful to the customers entering the coach, being overbearing and would even not allow passengers to shut the curtains to sleep on the bus (may I add this was a night service). Mr Cowie's unnecessary lack of respect very clearly upset a lot of members of the coach at the beginning of our trip, which set a bad tone for the members of the society who had paid to attend. Mr. Cowie's attitude continued to escalate and he became increasingly more aggressive towards the end of the trip while we were boarding the coach for the journey home. A female student was onboard and was desperate to use the toilet and as the driver had locked the toilets I spoke to him on her behalf enquiring if it were possible for him to open them up. It seemed strange to myself that he would lock the toilets considering we had a 6 hour journey ahead of ourselves and it is very likely that someone would need to use them. Mr Cowie rudely refused to open the toilets and explained that they should only be used in the event of an emergency. At this point I explained to him that I was very unhappy with his attitude towards the group and his customer service throughout the trip. He then escalated the situation and aggressively jumped out of his chair towards me and demanded that I vacate the bus or he would call the police. As I had only made a complaint to the driver, I refused to vacate the bus and welcomed his request to call the police. My fellow colleagues were also willing to leave the bus as his behaviour was aggressive and endangering to us all. I explained that I had only been acting on behalf of a female student who was in need of the toilet. In Mr Cowie's rage he refused to come to any solution with his customer and only seemed to care about maintaining a show of defiance. His irrational and unprofessional behaviour made me sceptical of his sobriety and thus lead me to become increasingly worried for my safety and that of my fellow students. I eventually managed to reason with Mr Cowie and he allowed to me return to my seat. However, while returning to my seat he began to shout derogatory abuse such as "You are a disgrace to the youth of today" and "you are setting a bad example for your generation". I then think it dawned on Mr Cowie that it was not safe to have the toilets locked for the duration of the trip as in the event of an emergency it would result in the bus making unnecessary stops in inconvenient locations to allow for the toilets to be unlocked - which could take a considerable amount of time if an emergency had arose. While unlocking the toilets, I politely thanked Mr Cowie for seeing sense, to which he hurled a volley of unwanted and foul mouthed comments while drawing his key and stabbing them in the air in my direction. I hope that you can understand that with this type of threatening behaviour, I was extremely concerned for my own safety and that of my fellow passengers, however, the group were helpless to do anything as the coach was our only means of getting 230 miles home. On arrival of our final destination I spoke to Mr Cowie once again, to inform him that I wished to proceed by filing a formal complaint to his employer regarding his professional conduct to his customers. Mr Cowie then refused to acknowledge that we were his customers and said that his customer was the University, as if this was some sort of excuse for his shocking behaviour. On the contrary, the buses are not booked through the University in any way, as we are only in affiliation with the university and so it is highly insulting to have our complaints dismissed because we 'are not the customer'. This attitude is absolutely shocking in my opinion." - my complaint to Prentice Westwood.

This company has been one of the worst coach journeys I have ever been on, when people are paying…read moregood money to travel you would expect the bus driver be friendly, polite and generally make it the journey a pleasant experience...well you would expect. Upon arrival our bus driver looked like he was set on making this a very unpleasant trip almost as if that was his job rather than driving. However I was impressed with one thing, and that was the fact that he never changed his frowning face for the whole 12 hour round trip, I'm surprised he didn't trip over his bottom lip whenever he stood up. Now I'm against naming and shaming but he is a Mr and his last name rhymes with "owie" (I chose owie because it is usually used by a child, i thought it was fitting judging how this driver acted...like an overgrown child). If anyone unfortunately gets this bus driver I would like them to be aware that you are in for a fantastic trip full of belittlement and uncomfortableness,

This is a relatively clean railway station that has easy access to it by two separate entrances…read more There are fairly regular trains - depending on the day and time etc etc. The station itself, is not much to write home about. BUT, Shawlands is the Byres Road of the southside. This meaning, there is a large range of shops: from chain stores - such as Superdrug - to lovely little independent outlets ideal for gifts with hand carved furniture, handmade cards and the like. Additionally, there's a good selection of bars, restaurants, bistros and coffee shops. It also helps that from town, train is one of the quickest ways here. Though, there is always a good selection of buses which are available.

However, it is the handiest for Shawlands which probably represents the best area in the Southside to head out in. Trains take just a few minutes from the City Centre and it's a short walk from the station to Pollokshaws Road where there are plenty of bars and restaurants. The area around the station feels safe enough although there weren't too many people about when I visited and I did have to exit via a fairly secluded pathway.

I suggest the Red Line as it passes most of the major sites. Ride the loop once first to get your bearings and decide what you want to see when. I suggest getting off at Edinburgh Castle, take the Castle Tour, then start exploring the shops/restaurants/whiskey sellers along the Royal Mile so you're walking downhill :).

We really enjoyed this hop on and off bus tour. It's valid for 24 hours and takes you near all the…read moremajor sites. Just riding around on a loop or two is a good way to see the entire city. It's not as long as some other tours you might do in a larger city but it's a good way to get to and from all the sites. Helped that one stop was across the street from our hotel.
