The Glen is a wooded area in the heart of the town which has been enjoyed by locals and visiters for at least as long ago as the 17th century.
Today it is managed by the Scottish Wildlife Trust. It is home to a variety of native plants and flowers, visit the glen in the spring and the groung is covered in a mass carpet of bluebells. Oak and Sycamore trees dominate the tree spicies in the wood but there are a few elm, ash and beech to be found. Another aspect of the glen are the large number of breading birds in the area including garden warblers, green woodpeckers, blackcaps and jays.
The area is also taken care of by Friends of Cumbernauld Glen, this group organise events in the glen including procesions and clean up days.
The glen also contains the recently restored Dovecote. This building dates from the 17th century and was used to rear birds for the table of the local lairds.
In short Cumbernauld Glen is a treasure trove of wildlife and a wonderfull, peacefull place to visit. The townspeople of Cumbernauld are increadably lucky to have such a fantastic, natural place so close to enjoy. read more
