In the annex is one of many new 'hipster' cafés (jam jars instead of glassware is a dead giveaway) that have been opening recently everywhere. Whilst the interior is beautiful, for me this is a place that you will either love (my housemate swears by their coffee and breakfast burrito) or be indifferent towards. Unfortunately, I'm in the latter category. I should start by saying I'm a fairly simple soul - I look for good food that is reasonably priced when I eat out. While the Annex does do good food, their menu is very very limited (as they don't really have a kitchen to cook anything). Last time I went there were literally only one or two things I would consider ordering off it. Admittedly that was the Xmas menu, but I still remember it being like that before as well. Coupled with the limited options some of the food can be on the more expensive side (for what you get). If you like coffee I think you will probably love this place, if you're like me then you could be a bit indifferent to the whole thing and find yourself thinking about the $5 burgers next door...

Whether or not it was influenced by being my first stop for coffee this morning or just a damn fine experience, I am really happy that I ended up here. Started off with a batch brew made with Nicaraguan single origin from Sample Coffee Roasters. It was much darker than I would normally expect from Sample, but with this darkness came a really nice body and slight english breakfast finish. Unfortunately as the coffee was getting on a bit, many of the florals had flown, but what was left was still a very enjoyable start to the day. But then when the Umami long black came out, the aroma almost had me salivating. A robust and smooth body, it had a perfect balance highlighted with light florals and light winey back end to make it all worthwhile. Basically...yum. I have only ever once before in many years written a poor review of a busines, so this is a big deal for me. But hey, it tastes good and it looks SO FREAKING CUTE so I'll let it slide. Service can be a bit iffy, with several tables staying uncleared for the whole time I was there and staff not being able to explain several items on their menu. And be prepared to carry your own food and drinks with you if you sit upstairs. These guys are open til late, so it's usually packed on any night of the week with students and their laptops using the wifi. But hey, they're probably pretty cute too so it all just adds to the charm.

I love the fact that they sell their wraps in half measures, so you can mix and match flavours or keep it light, so you can fill up on their delicious sweet items. My son loves the cute chocolate cupcakes they sell, in fact they're the only cakes he will eat (I often wonder if he is indeed mine). They come with a variety of jelly characters on the top and my kid is a fan of the pink penguin. Apparently there are hysterical meltdowns if the favoured character is not available. Apparently. When I was there yesterday, they were pushing the 'Cimbelle alla Nutella', an Italian doughnut slathered with Nutella and then squashed in the sandwich press.
