With all the talk about how they are all about the kids this was a pretty sociologically damaging to a 10yr old child that had no previous bad behavior. I thought they had non bullying policey?? My Daughters cell phone was stolen. She was at gym class. They gave no place to lock up her belongings. They blamed her for it being stolen. Is this what we want our kids to learn? This school was pitched to us by our advisor as "up and coming" in the ISL; not quite in the…read morecategory of Middlesex, Roxbury Latin or BB&N, but small enough to provide a lot of independent attention to students, and trying hard to improve their standardized tests results and matriculation over time. Coming from a very good public school system, and with a lot of experience with some of the other private schools, I think my expectations were set too high. First, the pros: The kids are great. I never saw any bullying or harassment, and everyone seemed very pleasant and supportive. The facilities are reasonably nice for a small school, and some of the teachers were very good as well. The food was excellent, and for this reason alone our child still remembers his time at Rivers fondly. Next the cons: Frankly, some of the teachers were not great, possibly because of rapid turnover. Some seemed to have little or no teaching credentials or experience, and many would not have been able to get a job in a public school. There are no grades in the middle school, and the prose evaluations were useless for trying to figure out where extra work was needed. The student population is creepily monotonous in both race/ethnicity and in appearance. Also, the focus on athletics was frustrating. I initially thought that mandatory participation in athletics would be a good thing, building leadership and teamwork skills. I was not bothered by the fact that they have very few teams that could be consider "winning" because they are such a small school, but it is something that seems to really bother the administration, perhaps because this is an issue for enrollment and development. As a result, for many of the teams there seems to be enormous pressure on the kids to push harder and harder until they are exhausted and miserable. Most frustrating, however, was the rigid, paternalistic manner of the administration when there was any sort of concern or conflict about the curriculum. It was a sort of arrogance out of proportion to the quality of the school that was really irritating. We really had the impression that our child's welfare was solidly a second priority after the "way things are done at Rivers." I guess this is more of a rant than a review. Perhaps there will be some balancing opinions.

As a single mom, finding a supportive, nurturing, and enriching environment for my children was essential, and BOPN gave us exactly that and so much more. From the incredible administration and passionate founders to the caring, dedicated teachers and the wonderful families who make up the community, every single person involved in this school is extraordinary. There is a warmth, authenticity, and deep commitment to the well-being and growth of every child, and every parent, that you simply don't find everywhere. My girls have not only flourished academically and socially, but they've also developed a deep love for nature, exploration, and learning through play. Every day was filled with joy, wonder, and connection. The values of empathy, curiosity, and community are woven into everything they do. I am a former student of SVS and unfortunately I cannot be proud of this affiliation. During the…read moreyears I attended and afterward I witnessed some blatant hypocrisy and violations of the school's stated philosophy, including by some of the most seasoned staff members. The claim is that decisions are to be made by the entire community via School Meeting, but the staff do in fact gatekeep and manage to exclude any ideas or proposals that they don't like without any discussion whatsoever. I personally have known quite a few people who were burned by the heavy-handed controlling efforts of certain staff members. Make no mistake: SVS is NOT a democratic school; it merely masquerades as one. If the founders don't like your idea (or don't like you), it won't be up for a vote; it'll be squashed preemptively. There isn't necessarily anything wrong with a school where students aren't in charge. But it shouldn't pretend to be what it's not.

We had the worst experience with the manager of Mathnasium in Sudbury. I have nothing against the…read moretutors themselves but the manager was awful! After taking lessons during the summer, we signed up for 10 private lessons (because that was the package) and then we could sign up for more at the end of the 10 pack. They never asked us if we wanted to renew however. They just gave away our weekly time slot without consulting us or asking us if we wanted additional lessons. My daughter showed up for her weekly class today and they told her that she did not have any lessons left. That was it! Never did they ask us if we were interested in another package of 10 and I frankly assumed they would so I wasn't keeping track of the number of lessons. Who doesn't ask the person in a time slot if they'd like to renew?! When I asked her why she did that, she responded by saying that she had three new students interested (in my daughter's time slot) so why should she change the date for the three new students for the one that had the time slot???? I had never heard anything like this before and was shocked by her response. What she didn't say was that the three students collectively paying than the one student was in her best interest. It was about the money. She offered us a later, less attractive time for a young girl who has been going there since July. If I could give zero stars I would. This is not how to treat a customer who has been paying since July. Be careful about this place; it's evident that you get tossed if they find an opportunity to make more money by edging you out and then telling you they can give your young child a later spot.
