I almost left initially because he and the other customers in front of me kept constantly commenting on how Ms. Jackie "likes to lay out of work" (she's a single mother, yet I've never actually seen Shannon in the shop), but I stayed as it was supposed to be a simple trim. I explained that I just wanted it trimmed up and evened out, with no length taken off, and let him get to work. My first thought was that his body odor was overpowering, but he had already started. After a few minutes, he showed me his work, and my beard was more ragged looking than when I first came in, and shorter. I asked him to take just a little more down, and re-emphasized that I wanted an even, uniform look. Shannon took more than half the length off on his second attempt, and while it wasn't as bad as the first, it was still very uneven. I thought it might be the light or my eyes playing tricks on me, so I paid and left, and went to go and get a second opinion. Luckily, I was able to find another shop to repair the damage enough that I didn't have to shave what was left off. After going and letting someone else look at my beard to make sure it wasn't just my eyes playing tricks on me, I returned to the shop and told him I wasn't happy with the work, and would like him to even what was left of my beard out. He raised his voice at me needlessly in front of other customers, returned my money, and asked me to leave. There was no need for it to escalate to that point, but since he did, I took the refund without a word and walked out. My cousins Ernest and Ron Edwards put in 47 years at this location, first under Mr. Crawford, the original owner, then running it as Edwards Barber Shop starting in 1971. I think it's a shame that their tradition of professionalism in both trade and customer service has seemed to go the way of the dodo, especially when it's their former customers that are keeping the shop open.
