This is my partner's most recent experience: I had planned to get a tattoo done right before the Christmas holidays and so made an appointment 3 months in advance. The tattoo I wanted I'd been thinking about getting for quite some time now, and obviously since it's a permanent fixture on my body, I had some specific ideas I wanted to bounce off her. I made time to visit her shop about 3 weeks before my actual appointment to go over some of the details. She listened to what I had to say, but gave the impression that I was not a priority, despite me being the only person in her store. I was a little put off, but left her with some notes on what my ideas were. Two weeks before my appointment, I emailed her with a more concrete idea, some reference images, a description of what I wanted based on these images, and a few questions about her pricing and such. I never received a response from her, and ended up sending another email to her a week later to see if she had ever received the first one. She finally responded saying she had received it, but that she wouldn't start working on the design until closer to my appointment time. She finally reached out to me with questions about my design 48 hours before the scheduled inking. After responding to her questions, she emailed me 20 minutes later with a draft image. I sent back an image with some alterations I wanted and she replied with "I'll get to it tomorrow". The next day rolls around, and she sends me an altered image about 24 hours before my appointment with only one of the five changes I had wanted, and no text accompanying that email. At this point, I'd spoken with the community at large which had unanimously said that this transaction was sketchy at minimum, if not an outright scam. So I responded to her 'updated' image expressing my discomfort, and explaining that I'd rather have someone who cared a bit more about the permanent piece of art I wanted etched into my skin. Her response was that she was "a VERY busy tattoo artist, and routinely did everything last minute." This, needless to say, did not reassure me. She then informed me of her 72 hour cancellation policy. When I confirmed my cancellation and asked how I was supposed to adhere to that policy when she had only reached out to me 48 hours prior, her response was "Happy Holidays" At this point, I'm more disappointed than angry. The tattoo was supposed to be a Christmas gift and I got myself excited about it, but this whole experience has left a bad taste in my mouth.

I'm 25% Colombian so you can only imagine how thick, curly, and easily tangled my hair is/can get. My hair wasn't even frizzy when she was done with it. I got a deep condition, cut, and style (straightened) for only $36 AND the quality of work was to par with what I'm used to in the city. Recently I had some traumatic situations happen in my life causing me to put my hygiene on the back burner, I ended up with a "birds nest" for hair. It was one giant dread lock.. mind you my hair was almost to my waist. I was afraid of the inevitable cut I would need since I'm a big girl and it isn't hard making a cubby woman look butchy, Crystal was awesome!! She did the perfect short cut that framed my round face due to chubby cheeks and I love the options I have with my hair now. Crystal is great to converse with and gives you quality over just trying to get you done so she can move to another client. 2 hours of tedious cutting, washing repeatedly and straightening all the small pieces and she only wanted $22. I suggest this place, ever since they relocated a few months ago the hairdressers are awesome. She did a good job so I asked if she could book me an appointment with her to touch up the color in my ombre styled hair... Big mistake. My hair looked like I had patchy golden highlights with a root that had grown in for over six months! I thought I would be okay with it, but upon arriving home an hour later I called the salon and asked if the damage could be fixed. I decided to ask for a refund and had my hair fixed elsewhere because why have more damage done to my hair if it could not be done right the first time...? I was told "I don't think we can do a refund" and was out $90... On top of this, while my hair was processing SUNY Potsdam students were outside peacefully protesting. Sarah took the time to go outside and yell, "White Power" as well as make horrific comments to those inside the salon ("I am not racist, but...")... some of whom joined in with the racist banter. Needless to say I will not be going back to Shear Creations anymore. I am appalled the lack of respect for long time customers, but more so for the African Americans in our community.
