Detours de Loire - me and my bike!

    Detours de Loire

I was staying in Blois and rented a bike from this place to Chaumont-sur-Loire 20km away. I had a…read morefantastic ride! The Loire à Velo paths are super easy to follow and the guys here will give you a map of the routes. It was 15€ to rent a bike for the day, plus a 300€ deposit (which wasn't really a deposit; the guy just wrote down my credit card number and said he'd only charge me if the bike was lost or damaged). The basic bike is made for all-terrain, which comes in handy for those charming French cobblestone streets as well as paved bike paths. It took a bit of practice to shift gears, but they worked well, as did the brakes. The seatpost doesn't require a special tool to adjust so you can move it up and down as you need to. They also give you a repair kit, small pump, cable lock and key. I didn't get a helmet, nor do I feel like I needed one. The bike paths are so smooth and easy to ride, and I was passed by maybe three cars all day. It's also easy to take your bike on the TER (regional) train in one or both directions for your ride. One of the train cars has big drawings of bikes on the side, and just when you enter, you'll see 3 hooks where you hang your bike vertically by the rim of the front tire. It was very easy to do. You can also arrange to drop off your bike at one of the many partner shops throughout the Loire, so for example you could get your bike in Blois, ride to Amboise, then leave the bike in Amboise and take the train back. I definitely recommend renting a bike as an unforgettable way to see the Loire and its chateaux!

Unfortunately, we had a pretty terrible experience with Detours de Loire Tours. We picked up our…read morebikes in Orleans and had planned to make our way to Tours. But my pedal started sticking a couple miles down the road, by the time we arrived at Chambord, the pedal would barely turn and my knee was in severe pain. Leaving Chambord the pedal actually fell off. Because I had no cell phone service, I could not contact the company about the issue. I had to bike the remaining 20km on one pedal. By the time we arrived in Blois, my knee was in so much pain, we decided we couldn't continue our long planned bike trip down the river. The following morning we took our bikes into the local rental office and we were told we were out of luck. We rented 2 bikes for a 3 day trip down the Loire river and only had 1 working bike for 1 day and we were charged the full amount. We had planned this trip for a year and I was so excited to bike along the Loire and our trip was ruined because we were given a bike that had not been checked before we rented it. I understand that mistakes happen, but I was shocked that our money was not refunded. I would be cautious with renting with this company. They do not stand behind their service.

Guys I can tell you that this shop staff and the manager are IIC , ignorant, incompetent, careless If you are a good athlete... it doesn't mean that you will be a good shop manager ... you failed me and you spoiled my day and more you don't care .. Flat tire in the middle of no where , it was supposed to be an amazing day but because of the recklessness of Laurent cycles shop staff , it was a very bad day waiting help under the rain !!! Why ? Because they were irresponsible and they forgot the air pump

They have a changing room and you can leave your street clothes there while you ride. I was even given a fresh café at the end of my ride! So good. What a great place to ride. So, I found Paris Bike Company and set up a ride with Sam, sending him the dimensions of my bike in advance. The original day we'd arranged for was rainy, and he was super-flexible about postponing it a day or two. Once in Malakoff, I easily found his shop and Sam waiting for me. Sam is super-chill and isn't there to kick your butt, but rather lets you set the pace according to your ability (I discovered I'd been eating and drinking a little too much on my trip, so being allowed to set our pace was a good thing). We set off on our ride, him explaining some of the local rules of the road so as to make the trip a safe one. We rode out to Versailles and back, about a 50km round-trip. During the trip, Sam was a great tour guide. If it hadn't been quite so chilly (and I'd been a little better dressed for the cold), I would have gone out for longer. Although it cost a bit to do, having a private two-hour tour of the countryside was one of the best things I did in Paris!
