In honor of a fellow Phoenix Yelper who writes many of his reviews in song, I'll do my best to fill his shoes...with a little holiday spirit. Read/sing to Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow: Oh, the Sulphur Mountain hike was frightful But the ice cleats were delightful To give us traction through the snow Here we go, here we go, here we go The air is so thin, I keep stoppin' But the views around us are poppin' And we take a few more pics to show We're still so low, still so low, still so low The gondola above is in sight But the clouds are hinting of a storm We hope to make it to the top by night So we can finally eat and be warm And the snow starts a-fallin' The Clark's nutcracker starts a callin' Time to throw on my jacket and mits Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow Near the top, we see the light As the blizzard starts to form And thankfully I don't have frostbite After taking one more panorama for mom Finally inside in relief we're sighing Headed to the Sky Bistro for some dining And we're surrounded by our victorious glow Time to chow, time to chow, time to chow

Such an awesome hike! Do it for the Yelp photos! We arrived at the Sulphur Mountain's base to all put on our much-needed crampons. Yelp provided almost everyone with these ice cleats; however, we showed up with our own crampons because we hiked the super icy Johnston Canyon the day prior and learned our lesson. The hike was 3.4 miles one way with a free gondola ride down. The top of the observation deck was 7,486 feet above sea level with a total elevation gain of 2,300 feet. Relatively easy hike but the altitude may getcha. The hike was essentially a zigzag up the mountain with no scrambling or climbing. It started snowing when we were about 15 minutes from the finish line.

I am experienced hiker. I can smash a 6 mile hiking trail no problem. I've hiked up Half Dome. I've done Vernon Falls. I've easily conquered the hiking trails up Iron Mountain in San Diego. But goddamn was this hike hard. We met Risa who provided us ice cleats (thank god). The hike was cold and icy for the first 1/2 of the hike. Lots of time was spend readjusting the ice cleats on my hiking boots. The second hike was sloshing through tons of powdery snow. The cold, the altitude, the snow, and the icy trail made it incredibly difficult. My expectations were shattered on this hike - the fact that it was a near vertical ascent on a series of switchbacks made it difficult to see where your end destination was. So we marched and marched and marched. The views are incredible. Sky High Restaurant is unparalleled in the area for restaurants with a view. The peaks, lakes, trees, followed by a charcuterie plate and beer (or wine or cider) and a nice easy gondola ride down, this was the way to start off a Banff trip! TL;DR underestimate Mt. Sulphur at your own risk.

Once at the summit, the 360-degree panoramic views of the Rocky Mountains, Banff town and Bow Valley are breathtaking--it truly feels like standing on top of a postcard. A huge bonus for families: the kids were given an awesome activity book! Completing all the tasks earned them a cool patch and sticker. It turned the whole trip into a fun, interactive adventure for them. What we loved: 1. The scenic boardwalk walk to the Cosmic Ray Station. 2. Great photo opportunities (the photo package we bought turned out amazing with fun backgrounds. 3. Spotting local wildlife, including mountain goats and squirrels. 4. Super friendly staff and excellent facilities, including educational exhibits, gift shops, and a Starbucks. Going on a Friday morning was a great choice--arriving at 8:40 AM meant we had our choice of parking spots. Just keep in mind that it gets busy fast; by the time we headed out at noon, parking was incredibly crowded. We spent about three hours exploring the top. Because we had a big breakfast, we skipped the nice-looking restaurants up top to save room for later and headed straight to the hot springs right next door afterward. Overall, a wonderful, reasonably priced experience that I would highly recommend to anyone!

Our first stop was Olive Lake. A gorgeous green-blue body of water. A short trail from the parking lot. Our next stop was Paint Pots. Such a cool experience. We've never seen anything like it before. The colorful, iron-rich pools were so cool to see up close. The boardwalk to the paint pots was picturesque too. There are many stops and viewpoints along highway 93. Be sure to stop at the ranger station to get your park pass ($14/day) and map of all stops along the route. Most stops have restrooms available as well. Overall a must while visiting British Colombia, Canada. We thoroughly enjoyed exploring this area and would highly recommend.

Compared to Banff, Kootenay was empty & there are plenty of bodies of Gatorade-like waters. We enjoyed the wide open spaces and the non-touristy vibe of the park. On our Stanley Glacier Hike, we only saw 3 other sets of people... no shoulder bumping or shuttles needed here. We opted for the annual family/group pass, a great value if you're spending a week or so in any combination of the parks &/or may come back. (& we will come back... already planning it)
