We had an offer accepted on a good-looking Victorian house, and hired Jake to inspect it. Unlike the inspector we used for our first home purchase, Jake came prepared to look at every nook and cranny: ladders to get up on the roof (the other guy just used binoculars), Tyvek suit and mask to crawl under the foundation of an added room, video/still camera to record his observations as he documented things. He uncovered serious defects (e.g., that the plumber installing the additional 1st floor bath had cut through a supporting joist to run the pipes) that a "hands-off" inspection would not have found. Conversely, his inspection of another house we were considering gave us confidence to make a bid that allowed us to buy a house in much better shape! Jake does more than the usual inspector and is worth his fee in order to save you from potentially much larger expenses!

Questionable at best…read more Long story short. He almost caused us to not buy a house. His report left many unanswered questions. Never stated flat out that anything was wrong, but he implied... and boy did he imply... Thankfully I checked (via a friend's connection) that the fear mongering approach is common for Jake. He also has a reputation as a deal breaker (not to be confused with a deal broker). That came from the (friend of friend) inspector who looked at his report and told us to ignore most of it. I suspect that he does it so he can impress us and get rehired $$$$s... Imagine if you had to re-hire him for another house and another house, until you woke up and realized that he is taking you for a ride. A home inspector is not a contractor. S/he should observe what is required by 226 CMR 6 -- and clearly should not be writing like the Oracle of Delphi -- that is saying things without really saying them. Save yourselves some money and hire an inspector with fewer bells and whistles... Man did he make it stressful for us!!!

I figured that this would possibly be the most important investment I could make; I am not equipped to deal with a house that has lots of hidden issues. After seeing all the positive reviews for this company, I switched over. I could not be more pleased that I did. Dana explained everything in great detail and in language I could understand, and he went through the house with a fine-toothed comb. This home is a renovation, and everything is brand new, so my realtor expected us to be done with the inspection fairly quickly. Dana spent more time than he had to, explaining things to me, telling me about things I'd need to think of in the future regarding owning a home, and taking pictures of everything so that I have a record of where things are and what they do. Working with him allieviated all of my fears around us missing something that would end up becoming a huge expense to me. I felt like I had a favorite uncle looking out for me and making sure that he was giving me the guidance I needed in a process that is totally unfamiliar and kind of scary. After having it serviced, we were told the boiler is junk and that it needed replacement. We have been informed from multiple people that this was a glaring issue that should have been caught upon inspection. After a very complicated and taxing process, we are now over $12K in the hole for a boiler replacement & other matters regarding this, even after paying $35K over asking price for the house. 3 stars because I understand it is a tough situation to be in especially because inspection was performed during late summer, when the boiler hadn't been running for some time, and we watched our inspector run the boiler for over 45 minutes producing only a small amount of leaking water (which we have been told, is apparently normal).
