The restaurant itself was really busy with a great buzzin atmosphere, and I got the feeling this was the feel they go for, even on nights that aren't NYE. The only let down was the service, we had 6 people serve our table throughout the evening, ranging from fantastic to robotic and rude. Overall, we enjoyed our experience, both being impressed with the quality of the cuisine on offer. If you like Asian food you will like Long Chim. As an aside, the English couple next to us thought their dishes were too hot (hottest they had ever eaten), while that wasn't our experience, might be worth asking about heat levels if you are chilli averse.

Such a simple dish is sadly so easy to bugger up, and it seems that so many places don't bother to get their Thai soups right because they have all those strifrys and curries to wow people with. I'm pleased to say that Fomo did a mighty fine job. Their Tom Yum is loaded with seafood, kaffir lime leaves, lemongrass and what I think was shredded coconut bits. It came served with it's own little candle heater underneath so it remained hot as I slurped my way through it, dipping my sticky rice in to the broth. At just under $17 it certainly wasn't the cheapest Tom Yum I've ever had, but it was satisfying and very tasty and coupled with some rice and a Thai iced milk tea, I got out of there for under $25. Next time I'm keen to return with a group of friends, as the menu here is just a little bit different with seven types of Som Tum (madness!) and all manner of grilled meats to choose from.

The work-tossed green beans with garlic, hoisin and sesame seeds was not as tasty as we were expecting, or have had previously in other places, slight smell that accompanied it as well. Confusing dish too, with broccoli and bok choy added to the mix (but not mentioned), was a pleasant surprise. The Szechuan chilli-salt squid with green-chilli soy was the biggest, expensive letdown of the night. The batter felt like it was dried out, with the consistency of mushy chips. Maybe it needed to be cooked more? It lacked the crunchy texture needed and the sauce, basic, in a tiny plate that you couldn't even dip the squid pieces in properly. The soft-shell crab tacos were tasty, and priced generously, however, lacked a champion flavour that could have been provided with more of the house made sauce. The main chilli caramel pork belly served with succulent scallops and a side of fresh Asian herb salad could have been so much more. The side salad was the main attraction covering almost 70% of the plate. The scallops were ridiculously tiny, only two of them, but were delicious. The pork belly, lovely cooked skin, but disappointingly dry. The dish was saved by the sauce on the salad. It was difficult to get service after the main dish was gone, we wanted dessert but took almost 30 minutes before we could order. Until one of the other waitresses came to our rescue, she was great. To our disappointment, the peanut butter parfait was sold out. However, the roti pancake and dark chocolate and Cointreau mousse more than made up for it. Well-balanced, tasty desserts that would satisfy even the most sweet-tooth amongst you. The sweet stuff doesn't let you down. While eating the dessert the waitress took one of the drinks away that still had some left, she was that quick I couldn't stop her from taking it. I still do not understand why they do this. Please stop doing this. It makes no sense, ask first. The rum cocktail and the lychee and lime soda mocktail ($6 is a great price point) were winners in my book, both nailing that sour taste, and were satisfying drinks. Tom Phat needs to do more to earn a high rating, unfortunately for us, the expectation was not met, both in food and service wise. It's a good night out, but do not expect too much here.

Maybe I don't get out enough but I've not seen the like of a couple of the starters they have here. The Chiang mai sausage is a beauty. There's seriously good heat in these and they have good deep spicy flavour. We loved this dish. It's one of the more interesting Thai starters I've ever had and the heat stayed with me for a while after the dish had been demolished. By contrast, the crispy fried tofu cake wasn't anywhere near as satisfying. The tofu had nothing to really lift it. The accompanying taro cake was nice and maybe helped a little. But, there was nothing else and as far as I could tell and the sweet chilli sauce promised on the menu wasn't evident. Again, I've not had anything like the fresh spring roll which is, um, fresh not fried. Interesting flavour and texture here. We liked it the dish. On to the mains then. The Thai Thani green curry was good. The sauce is thinnish not thick and creamy as it can be sometimes. We liked it. The texture of the winter bamboo particularly sparked my interest in this dish which had good kick throughout. The Pad Thai here is a good one as well. A large serving with good flavour. We also liked that the noodles were thinner than usual. The Salmon Choo Chee curry is lovely too. We've not seen this in s Thai place before. The salmon was done beautifully and even had the promised crispy skin. The dish had good curry flavour that we enjoyed. The veggies were cooked perfectly too with some residual crispness still evident which we always love. To top things off, the rice was cooked superbly as well. Light and fluffy just as it should be. Service was adorable throughout. There were three young servers always at the ready at the counter to take our order, deliver dishes and drinks and clear everything away. Their efficiency and politeness was fantastic. The only slight downside to the evening was the bloke at the next table who kept looking over at ours. Like, constantly! I found it rather unnerving and started to stare back til he turned away. This was a good meal overall. This Thai food is different to the customary local Melbourne Thai but we liked it. The food is tasty, the service is good (way more friendly than Thaila Thai for example), and price-wise it is moderately priced - similar to other Thai joints in the area. If you are not looking specifically for Thai food, I'd probably rather go to Cafe 58 round the corner. Alternatively, if it has to be Thai, then I'd recommend travelling that little bit further to Ying Thai 2 on Lygon street.

We had a party of 9 and had a range of dishes. Every single dish was excellent. In order they were sweet and sour pork ribs, kong pao chicken, kong pao prawns, ma po tofu with beef mince, dry stir fried beans, fish flavoured eggplant and sweet and sour cabbage. Every single dish was fantastic. I loved them all and so did the whole table. If I had to pick a favourite it'd be a curious one. The cabbage was utterly magnificent. Cooked and flavoured so perfectly it was ridiculous. Service was up and down on the night. It was not good at the start. No one attending to us. Single dishes then delivered with significant intervals. No rice either. It made for a chequered and slightly awkward start. It was rectified in time but it shouldn't have happened at a restaurant of this quality. On the upside again, the cost of the meal was very modest at $33 a head. Exceptional value actually. We brought two of our own wines which helped the bottom line. What a great thing to be allowed to do. Overall I loved the place and would return in a heartbeat.
