If you are an expat, this will be your new comfort food craving after your first visit. Our group ordered three different sandwiches and shared many brunch dishes and they were all amazing. They serve their buttermilk pancakes topped with bacon and a generous helping of syrup on the side. The eggs benny came with fries and was delish as well. All of their amazing sandwiches come with an individual pickle that is made in-house. We shared a Chicken Cobb (Corn fed chicken, smoked bacon, avocado, blue cheese, boiled egg, tomato, red onion, lettuce & mayo on 3 slices of toasted white), The Toronto (Slow roasted topside beef, melted English cheddar, leaf lettuce, tomato, pickled hot peppers, red onion, & horseradish mayo on toasted sourdough), and The Medley (Roasted turkey breast, smoked ham, bacon, melted cheddar & emmental, lettuce, tomato, red onion, pickled hot peppers & basil mayo on toasted sourdough). This place is locally owned and the vibe is very laid back. We went around 12:30 on a Saturday and this place was packed. They take reservations so you might want to make some (we did). Overall, I will definitely come back.

There are few things in the world less appetizing to me than two pieces of pre-packaged soggy bread with one slice of ham drowning in a gallon of mayo that's been sitting on the Pret a Manger shelf all day. In America you only see stuff like that at gas stations, and even there they hold the mayo. In England, they put so much mayo on those sandwiches that it actually gets listed as an ingredient. So whereas you'd have a chicken sandwich with mayo in America, in England it becomes a chicken mayo sandwich. That's just wrong. And nasty. Enter Pickle & Rye. If this place were in Soho or South Kensington then there'd be lines out the door. True Mortlake is in London's upscale southwest and thus home to several affluent American ex-pats, but I feel like that this gem of a sandwich place is missing out on a golden opportunity by being stuck out in the middle of nowhere. It was a trek to get to even from Fulham, and I've got plenty of friends who think that Fulham is enough of a trek already. Or at least that's their excuse for never coming to visit us. This place would merely have to not completely suck to be one of the best sandwich places in London, but it's really taken the art of the sandwich to another level. The owner / head sandwich dude is a culinary school graduate who roasts all their meats, cures his own corned beef (known around these parts as salt beef), makes his own dill pickles (which are easily the best that I've ever had in England) and Russian dressing, with the result being the finest reuben this side of the Atlantic. I will gladly return to the middle of nowhere for another one.

I had the pulled pork sandwich and it was sweet and tangy and very messy which paired well with a sweet tea. Satisfyingly I can add that I ended my food trip with the Buttermilk Blues for breakfast and fresh-squeezed juice. Almost home.

Unfortunately, it's a bit of a trek for me, so it hadn't happened. However, I got a Facebook notice about a special wine and food night they were having: A New York State of Wine. It was showcasing traditional American dishes and New York wines. One thing I learned is that New York makes wine! And some of it is actually pretty darn good! So the food at Blue Plate is American-style food. The evening was a special tasting menu. Most of the courses were quite tasty and well done, and a few needed some work, but I imagine a lot of it is due to the fact that they aren't typically a tasting menu sort of place. The duck meatloaf, red snapper hash, sausages and black bean soup were pretty amazing. If that night was a good showing of what they typically do, I'll be back. I was told by one of the David's (both the owners are named David) that brunch is what they do best. Since it's my favorite meal of the day, I hope one day to trek out to Chiswick to give their brunch a chance!

However, I found myself being thrown out with the rubbish after finishing my meal, and although I keep hanging on, still there's no real explanation for such a measured response to the student exchange and optional extras people can't wait to order. London has become a brewery for once-in-a-lifetime retreats and if you enjoy the revolution of gastronomic culture, you'll most definitely enjoy this concrete halal restaurant which offers the best in a thriving burger industry. I am obliged by the good service.

It was nice to be in another country and find a little piece of home. What's interesting about this place is not only the name but the memorabilia plastered on the walls throughout. It gives the people in Hammersmith a slight glimpse into one of the best cities in the world. This place was within walking distance from our hotel and one of the only places that stayed open late. Our first night finding it, they were closing. Once we told them we were from Chicago, they were pleased to service us. They fired up the grills and got to cooking. There were 4 of us total and they made sure to live up to our cities great name by serving quality eats. We tried just about everything on the menu, seeing us how we ate here 4-5 times throughout the duration of our stay. Being from Chicago you become spoiled when it comes to dining out and cuisine because there are so many great options. London, ehh not so much. The food here at several restaurants was bland and disappointing. Burger and Lobster was great. Outside of that this place saved our asses or else I probably would've just had to survive on fruits and water for the remainder of our trip.

I am a sucker for gastropubs, and when searching for places in Hammersmith I noticed great reviews for The Stonemason's Arms. It also came highly recommended from one of the locals. They had a number of interesting sounding menu items, so we decided to head there for dinner. In true gastropub style, the menu is quite varied with some unique options. We decided to split one of the sharing boards and went for the Fish Board. It included Devon crab on toast, shell-on king prawns, London Porter smoked salmon, and mussels and clams. The Devon crab was essentially a crab spread on pieces of toast. Both the crab itself and the toast were tasty. The prawns had the "looking at you" vibe, complete with shell, eyes, etc. This meant there was a bit of work getting them ready to eat, but they were also done quite well with a very nice flavor. The smoked salmon was quite nice, with a good smoky flavor that really brought out the salmon. The mussels and clams were a bit different and almost tasted poached. I was expecting more of a boil, so they ended up not being my favorite, but they were still prepared quite well. Several of the mains sounded good, but after poring over the menu for a bit I finally settled on the lamb shoulder. It was a Hampshire lamb shoulder that had been slow braised for 12 hours and served over broccoli, tomatoes, and Jersey royals. The lamb was fall off the bone tender and had a great flavor. The accompaniments were also well-prepared and complemented the lamb nicely. I would have maybe liked the portion size to be a bit larger, but for the price it was quite good. I had room for dessert, and I decided to try the Treacle Tart, something I had never had before. It had a nice molasses flavor and finished off my dinner perfectly. The Stonemason's Arms has a bit of a fancier pub feel, with lots of beer options and quite the crowd as the night wore on. The service was great and very helpful in answering many of the questions we had. The food came out quickly and fresh, and the quality and bang for your buck was great. The Stonemason's Arms is quite a bit different than anywhere I have been in the US, but I quite enjoyed it and hope to return in the future.
