A cool and hip neighborhood American sandwich joint serving up solid sandwiches and delicious brunch items with real American bacon! If you are an expat, this will be your new comfort food craving after your first visit. Our group ordered three different sandwiches and shared many brunch dishes and they were all amazing. They serve their buttermilk pancakes topped with bacon and a generous helping of syrup on the side. The eggs benny came with fries and was delish as well. All of their amazing sandwiches come with an individual pickle that is made in-house. We shared a Chicken Cobb (Corn fed chicken, smoked bacon, avocado, blue cheese, boiled egg, tomato, red onion, lettuce & mayo on 3 slices of toasted white), The Toronto (Slow roasted topside beef, melted English cheddar, leaf lettuce, tomato, pickled hot peppers, red onion, & horseradish mayo on toasted sourdough), and The Medley (Roasted turkey breast, smoked ham, bacon, melted cheddar & emmental, lettuce, tomato, red onion, pickled hot peppers & basil mayo on toasted sourdough). This place is locally owned and the vibe is very laid back. We went around 12:30 on a Saturday and this place was packed. They take reservations so you might want to make some (we did). Like most American ex-pats, I'm amazed at how the country that invented the sandwich can't make a proper sandwich. There are few things in the world less appetizing to me than two pieces of pre-packaged soggy bread with one slice of ham drowning in a gallon of mayo that's been sitting on the Pret a Manger shelf all day. In America you only see stuff like that at gas stations, and even there they hold the mayo. In England, they put so much mayo on those sandwiches that it actually gets listed as an ingredient. So whereas you'd have a chicken sandwich with mayo in America, in England it becomes a chicken mayo sandwich. That's just wrong. And nasty. Enter Pickle & Rye. If this place were in Soho or South Kensington then there'd be lines out the door. True Mortlake is in London's upscale southwest and thus home to several affluent American ex-pats, but I feel like that this gem of a sandwich place is missing out on a golden opportunity by being stuck out in the middle of nowhere. It was a trek to get to even from Fulham, and I've got plenty of friends who think that Fulham is enough of a trek already. Or at least that's their excuse for never coming to visit us. This place would merely have to not completely suck to be one of the best sandwich places in London, but it's really taken the art of the sandwich to another level. The owner / head sandwich dude is a culinary school graduate who roasts all their meats, cures his own corned beef (known around these parts as salt beef), makes his own dill pickles (which are easily the best that I've ever had in England) and Russian dressing, with the result being the finest reuben this side of the Atlantic. I love coffee and I love trying new coffee shops. I've been to a few in the area and by far this is my favorite spot. They have great tasting coffee at affordable prices. I went for a friend's birthday, and although there was only three of us we still had a great time. The menu is small but simple and it's clear the owner and chef both care about the food they serve. The black & blue burger, which i had, was so, so juicy. All of the portion sizes were large enough to fill you up, and very reasonably priced for the fresh quality of the food. Overall we had a fantastic time. The restaurant itself was clean and spacious with a nice atmosphere. We will definitely be returning. read more

Best. Sandwiches. Ever. Seriously, you will not be disappointed with your sandwich selection at Pickle and Rye. Many of the meats used in the sandwiches are roasted in the store, and the sandwiches are not soaked in mayo, so you can actually enjoy the flavours of the meats and other sandwich fillings. My favourite? That's a tough one, but if I absolutely had to choose, I'd go for the pulled pork sandwich. I love the flavours of the warm saucy pork contrasting against the cool crunchiness of the coleslaw. But then again, the reuben has that delicious salt beef and sauerkraut on that amazing dark rye. Mmm... Not only are P&R's sandwiches AMAZING, but they also make their own sour pickles which are AWESOME. One does not realise how much they miss sour pickles until they can no longer find them in the supermarket, and these pickles are worth the trek if you need a pickle fix. Besides the excellent food, the staff are great and you can always except super friendly and efficient service. read more

REAL American food!! So many places in the UK claim to serve "American" food and they fall very short by just throwing bacon and cheese on things and calling it "American" :( Here, at Pickle & Rye, they do it RIGHT!!! Especially their breakfast food! Brought us right back home to the USA with each bite! The sandwiches and soup are also VERY good! The Ruben is a MUST to order! The restaurant is clean and the staff are all very friendly, but most importantly, the food is REALLY GOOD!!! We have only been living in the UK for a few months and will only be here for a couple more years. I'd almost gave them a 4 but decided on the 5. I got the Chicken Cajun or blackened burger. It tasted really good. We went on a half price ribs night and the ribs were falling off the bone. Ribs were about 7.50 and well worth it. Definately worth a visit.

Bloody brilliant. London sandwich bars generally fall into two categories - 1. Pret/EAT type places with nice but pretty dull fillings and average ingredients 2. Mediterranean/Italian sandwich bars with a glass counter under which there are suspicious bowls of bright yellow coronation chicken, lifeless rubbery chicken escalopes and a huge array of different tuna mixes. Thank goodness that Pickle and Rye has bucked the trend and is producing really interesting, fun sandwiches which taste like no sandwich I have ever eaten before. No wonder it's always so busy - I think they need to take a bigger unit! read more

This little cafe is perfect! I had family visiting, so we were a big group and we had no trouble finding a spot to fit us all in. The food for breakfast and brunch was beyond delicious, and I had to steal a bite of everyone else's because it all looked so good. I recommend the Eggs Benedict and the buttermilk pancakes. Went here for late brunch, 3 full English (very nice baked beans with speck), rather large portions. Also a large Californian sandwich which is essentially a salad bowl in a bread loaf, huge and yum vegetarian. Absolutely amazing sandwich! I had the pleasure of visiting Pickle and Rye today, I opted for 4 Reubens (not all for me), I have to say they were perfect in every way, the only mistake I made was not ordering the American size (I've learnt my lesson). The sandwiches were shared with 3 other colleagues at work, each and every one of us was silent until we had finished this delectable treat...always a good sign!
