I'm new in town and kept driving by D-Town Guitars and finally found the time to stop in. I brought my 1986 Ovation acoustic along because the action had changed and it was harder to play. Rob was super nice and took a look at it right away and spent 10 minutes making adjustments and it was back in action (pun intended). I asked Rob if he would also restring the guitar and he did that while I waited. I was bracing to be charged and had a number in mind and Rob charged me half of what I was guessing the charge would be. This was an excellent experience and I will definitely go back and also recommend this place to all my rock star friends... if you live in bucks county and you need a guitar worked on take the time to drive to freehold New Jersey and have Raritan Bay guitar repair work on it. I had these guys work on my Travis Bean guitar to fix some problems and they made it much much worse. And they took forever on top of it. read more

This inventory packed store is one of the last "brick and mortar" privately owned guitar shops around. I have always tried to give them my business over the giant online stores. Rob and his crew are all accomplished musicians and know what they are doing and talking about. The owner, Rob, is an authorized dealer for really whatever you need. So, if it's not on display he can order it and get it in very quickly. As far as trade in deals, I have always been given the best value for my used items. Always. The used gear for sale is normally the cheapest you can find, hence the reason it doesn't sit around very long. There is also never any hard selling or pressure to push something on you, unlike some of the other corporate/commission stores where you can feel attacked the split second you walk in. Sure, I can change my own strings, but I am I going to be able to set it up like these guys can? The action, the intonation, it's a guitar players dream when you get it back. The last guitar I dropped off to be restrung, set up and have new Gotoh tuners installed (which they had in stock at the shop, and $10 cheaper than online) was returned to me on the same day. When I saw the caller id come up a few hours later, I thought oh no the tuners don't fit, but it was them calling to say its finished and ready to pick up. The last guitar (Tom Delonge Strat) I bought from D-Town they came in $200 less than Sweetwater or GC. It took about 10 days to get, which was odd, Rob apologized for the delay and took another $100 off. I walked out of there with a new $1300 (Sweetwater price) Strat for $1000, not to mention Rob threw in a free guitar strap as well. Check this place out. A+ read more

I have bought a few odds and ends here and brought guitars and amps for repair. When I read the negative reviews, it feels as if I am reading about another store entirely. Rob and his colleagues have been unfailingly kind and reasonable. In fact, I even witnessed them working generously with a group of teenagers who were scraping money together to buy a guitar. They found a used gig bag in the back room and gave it to the kids for free. I have nothing but praise for this store. read more

This is really the best place to buy good guitars in the greater Philly area. Rob takes care of his customers and the experience of buying a guitar at Dtown is so much better and more personal than going to a big box retailer or even many boutique shops in Philly and NJ. Last week, I brought him my first guitar - a vintage 1963 solid body electric Hagstrom I, in very good-to-excellent condition, that I hadn't touched in 40 years. I wanted to even trade for a Fender acoustic electric and start playing again. After getting the run-around on FaceBook, Rob gave me an extremely good even-trade deal for a guitar, gig bag + goodies. I went back today to pick up my guitar and Rob informed me that he had already sold my guitar - in less than a week - and he gave me cash $$ and essentially split the profit, even though I hadn't given him the guitar on consignment! i Went in looking to buy an Ebony colored Gibson Les Paul custom, dropping $ 5,000. The rude guy behind the counter said they are hard to come buy and might take a year to get. To my surprise I went home and got on the Gibson web site and bought it directly from the Gibson , Nashville TN store, delivered to my home in less than a week, with a 30 day return policy. i also learned you can by amps and guitars directly from Fender and Epihone. A store like this is ok to buy a few guitar picks or replace a broken string, but not a guitar. read more

I wanted to take advantage of the quarantine downtime to teach my 2 sons to play guitar and bass. Rather than order online from Guitar Center or Sam Ash (which frankly would've been far easier during this time), I wanted to support a local business. Big mistake. The guy I dealt with was a nasty creep. You'd never know I spent significant money with him on a guitar, bass, stands, cables, and an amp repair. Arrogant, aloof weird agent with a horrible attitude. This store rocks! They have an amazing selection of new and vintage guitars and amplifiers. This place also does amazing repair work. I've had guitars and amps repaired and modified here and they've always done excellent work. Been here a handful of times. Rob is a great dude and excellent owner. This is a guitar players guitar store. One of the few local small businesses that has fender (custom shop), Gibson, Martin... and a whole ton of excellent amps. I bought my Martin here and Rob arranged with the Martin Factory to have me pick it up there. And take an exclusive tour. The customer service was incomparable. Best prices around. Great advice. I had a very similar bad experience. Neded a full setup and assessment with a one week deadline. After 3 weeks I called to say I would be picking my bass up on Saturday (one month total time) and was assured it would be completed. I picked up my bass and it was scratched and dirty. The "setup" resulted in the strings laying flat against the neck. They screwed with the truss rod and I have never been able to get the bass back into optimal playing condition. There was no cleaning, new strings were not put on and no recommendation was made (all part of the so called deluxe setup). The cherry on top was the owners belligerent poor attitude. He is one of those people who doesn't look at you when you talk to him or respond. Almost like you are a ghost or bothering him by actually paying him money to support his business. He also has an elitist attitude if you play anything other than a vintage instrument. He was nowhere to be seen when I picked up the bass and the employee there seemed almost as appalled as I was. He was certainly uncomfortable. I refused to pay. He agreed. I never received a follow up call from the owner. read more

I have been looking for a specific Fender special run guitar for a few years. I recently did a google search and the guitar I have been looking for popped up at this store. I called them immediately on the phone and the person I spoke to described the condition of the guitar in detail. I placed the order over the phone, sight unseen, and they had it setup, packed and shipped very quickly. They installed new NYXL strings and even sent me en extra set! The guitar arrived today in perfect condition, well packaged and with all the original case extras intact. I have read some of the other reviews but I experienced no negativity or attitude from the person I dealt with on the phone. After seeing a lot of good things about this place online, I decided I would take my guitar here to get it serviced and get a few new parts on it. I should have known better beforehand, after talking to an associate on the phone who sounded very lackadaisical. Anyway, some of the parts got backorder- OK, I can live with it, not the owners fault; however. what bothered me here is that he never bothered to call to give me an update. Two months went by and the only time I heard from any associate is when I called. Fed up, I went to the store today to pick up my guitar that has been SITTING THERE for almost two months. Upon returning home I opened my gigbag and found that the whole bridge of my guitar is off, in pieces that are thrown into a cheap plastic bag that was stuffed into a side pocket of the gigbag! To be fair, I can not comment on the instruments they sell- it did look like a nice selection. However, if you are planning on dropping your guitar off here for service look ELSEWHERE. There seemed to be no passion in the person that was supposed to be working on my guitar- find someone that cares about what they are doing and the customers they have!!!! read more

Always backhanded sarcasm over 7 days for string change and set up but was told it wouldn't take long if there is no repair I still think it wasn't even looked at then if you call they will rush it out with no care sorry will use only the amp repair guy at this place he is honest and will not treat a job like a burden read more

Stopped in today to pick up some replacement amplifiers for my school's jazz ensemble. Owner, Rob, could not have been more helpful and accommodating. He set us up with two great-sounding used amps at an amazing price. He also has a beautiful collection of new and vintage guitars and amps in addition to a huge record and CD collection for sale. I got my Gibson ES339 here. They have an excellent selection of Gibson's and their prices are great. Usually have a few killer amps here. Everything is playable and usually decently set up with fresh enough strings to tell if the axe has some mojo, unlike most guitar centers or Sam Ash. read more

I'm rating this only for the guitar set ups the store. I do not skate, nor do I buy vinyl records. Like other users I had a bad time getting my guitar set up here. The turnover is a bit long, and the actual technical work is not very good. I dropped of my guitar and it needed a full set up. A few weeks later I picked it up and the guitar was actually buzzing on the frets worse than when I had dropped it off. It was as if someone just fiddled with the guitar for a while, got bored and restrung it without paying attention to detail. I wound up having to take the guitar to another shop and get it fixed there. I don't want to deter people from shopping here because the guitar and amp selection is totally fine and better than most shops in the area. Just DO NOT get a set up here. Had my vintage 64 Fender Super reverb rebuilt, June 2017 ...new speaker board, 4 10" speakers, many caps /pots replaced, new grill cloth. Amp is 1000% better! The speakers were selected by the well know Fender repair expert D-Town Guitars uses. read more

Have not used a guitar tech service since I moved from California. Brought 3 basses into Rob for various work done. All the work was done at high quality level. What was shocking was how well he priced his work (techs at a boutique shop like Norman's in SoCal would not even crack cases for these prices).
