Originally, I set out to get a new floor installed and ended up with a full kitchen and master bath renovation as well as a new floor throughout most of the house. Additionally, we added interior paint throughout to finish the project. Ken and Shannon at D2 construction provided an initial estimate that was descriptive, easy to read and understand. Everything was transparent from start to finish and any questions or concerns were addressed very timely. The projected timeline was met even with uncovered issues that popped up during the project found as well as the normal supply chain issues. Once the demo started, the overall project moved along very smoothly. Any issues uncovered were addressed and multiple, viable solutions provided. I found that D2's subcontractors were timely, professional and friendly. Any questions I had while subs were present usually got answered right away or communicated to either Ken or Shannon at D2 and I received those answers very quickly. Shannon always reviewed any potential change orders with me, and budget impacts were discussed prior to moving forward. Ken with D2 was always available and here most days. He was always working onsite and is very knowledgeable in all aspects of construction. A major renovation can be stressful and is not without issues, however D2 and its team made it as seamless as possible. I contracted D2 to renovate a bathroom which involved a full demo. It was an approximately $17K job that turned out to be about $20K. They seemed highly professional, experienced and qualified at the time I signed the contract. I should have, however, asked for references. They mean well, and I think they are honestly good people. But project management, subcontractor management/work and quality control left much, much to be desired. Their subs seemed to be more in control of them than the other way around. Subs either showed up very late or not at all and often times, Shannon didn't know one way or the other. She often made excuses that her subs didn't communicate with her. Which in my opinion is A) not my problem, and B) reason to cut those subs loose. Work was sometimes very sub standard, even amateur. Tile crew installed a chipped tile right in the middle of the floor. How he did not see the tile was chipped when he laid and grouted is beyond me. It's the first thing my eye went to. Painters painted the door without priming it and the paint peeled right off. This is not professional work. After tile crew fixed the chipped tile, grout didn't match. Ken was supposed to be handling quality control, but he rarely was on site, and usually only to do the work he was planning to do. No one ever showed up after subs did work to inspect and make sure it was done to scope and/or professionally. Shannon was supposed to be handling project management, but half the time she didn't know if the crews were coming or not (or said they were and they either didn't show or showed up hours late.) Shannon never set foot in my house after we signed the contract. She had no idea what was or was not getting done. And tile guy thought it was just fine to bring his girlfriend with him one day. She stood in my kitchen on her phone before I threw her out of my house. Ken was surprised I had a problem with this and said this had happened on other jobs but no clients had ever complained about bring your girlfriend to work day. Some crew were listening to podcasts or watching soccer on their phones while they were supposed to doing exacting and quality work! There are still a few items in my bathroom that look terrible, but I tired of asking them to fix stuff over and over, and hearing excuses for why the work was not right in the first place. I'm happy with my bathroom, but only because I spoke up so often and demanded to get my money's worth. I could have general contracted this much better on my own and save a great deal of money, frustration, inconvenience, and time. Excuses, pushback and way too much of "this is how it's done." This is NOT how it is supposed to be done. read more
