A coworker of mine collects beads and makes beautiful earrings out of them. I wanted to find something Hawaiian to bring back for her. da Bead Shop stocks exactly what I had in mind! I ended up with little some lava rock beads which scream Big Island and some shell beads that were just interesting in the way they had been cut and the color. However, the crown jewel was the mgambo tree beads. This tree is originally from Africa but is also found on Big Island and has seeds that are fuzzy and velvety. The shop had some that had been made into cute little fuzzy beads! I fell and love with them and my coworker seemed very amused by them as well. This place can't be beat for unique beads. What a disappointment to say the least. I was told I had to purchase a string of beads because I pulled the string off a group tied together and my particular selection broke off costing 24.00! The clerk did not know the difference between common seed beads and cabochons. Place is great and people are amazing! Jade and Mo were incredible! I came in to find my wife some leather jewelry or to see if I could make her something for our third wedding anniversary, which apparently is leather. Bear in mind I have never made jewelry, at least that I can remember. So, I began to ask questions. Jade and Mo essentially took the elements I wanted and helped me create the jewelry right there on the spot. At one point a regular customer and jewelry designer came in at the perfect time and helped us put the finishing touches on a leather bracelet. They are super up to date on jewelry trends and have everything you need to create your pieces. Love this place. They offer amazing classes on the weekend for only $20 to $30 including materials with super nice, patient, prepared instructors. I've blown my family away with some things I've made in a 3 hour class that look like a professional did it. Super friendly aloha owners and staff, always willing to help you find that missing piece for your jewelry project. I've even asked their advice and not bought anything and they are totally willing to help, even if they don't sell something there. They want everyone to enjoy making jewelry and aren't just out for your money! Only negative is sometimes some of the stuff on the shelf or drawers gets a little jumbled or dusty and can be a bit hard to find. I'd imagine keeping a bead store clean, and organized would be hard with all those small pieces, but a little more could improve "customer experience"! It's minor though. Prices are great, totally fair and althought not a huge store with a giant selection, they have all the "latest trend" stuff like sea glass, waxed linen cord, sea shells, trendy findings, 16 guage wire for bangles, and plenty of standards like swarovskis, seed beads, etc. read more
