Initially, we had planned to go to Sammies for dumplings but they were booked for the entire night. Fortunately for my hubby and I, Daldongnae had room for us. Entering the space is like leaving the area completely. The decor intending to give an ancient village vibe is effective. While our waiter was not the best, overhearing other waiters and the warm welcome when we entered let us know that he may have been having an off day. We barbecued only beef and we had a few sides in addition to the banchan: Ginseng rice, Korean rolled omelette, and a kimchi pancake. If ordering items to bbq was not mandatory, I would come for the sides alone. The experience is pricey, but worth the expense. Plan accordingly! We enjoyed our time there and left very full!

Excellent food quality and efficient service. Can get very busy and hard to get staff attention, but they always come by to make sure everything is going well.

Daldongnae has long been one of our go-to spots for Korean BBQ -- and after living in Korea for seven years and eating BBQ hundreds of times, we know what to expect. Unfortunately, this visit was a real letdown. We waited nearly an hour for our food, which is something I've never experienced at a Korean BBQ restaurant -- even at peak hours in Seoul. The staff said they were busy, but the place wasn't unusually full. It honestly felt like they may have run out of meat. After 30 minutes, they finally came to tell us they were out of one of our orders. How does it take that long to realize? Our server was kind, and kept bringing refills of side dishes, but it was all apologies and no real resolution. By the time our food arrived, I had already filled up on rice and kimchi. No gesture was made to make up for the wait -- no discount, no voucher, just more platitudes. Really disappointing from a place we usually love. I hope this was a one-off, but it left a bad taste (and not the good kind).

The food was amazing!! I liked how we ordered our mains and it came with a variety of great tasting sides and dipping sauces.

A great time as always - fresh Korean BBQ. So satisfying and relaxing. Truly a great meal in the dynamic Byward Market area.

It was our first-time trying it because the original restaurant we wanted to go to on Somerset was closed, but we were definitely not let down. They open at 11:30 on the weekend and we were a bit early but the staff was super friendly and accommodating- letting us sit down, browse the menu and even place our order before they "officially" opened. Out of all the dine-in korean restaurants we've tried so far in Ottawa (which I know is quite limited and most aren't authentic- but that's not to say they aren't good): Alirang, Maht, Daldongnae, etc. This is definitely top tier AND we will be coming back. As a small business, they are generous with their refillable complimentary side dishes (which is so yum), the flavour HITS, and the service is so good and welcoming. They kept checking in with us, turned down the volume to the TV that we were sitting under, and kept refilling our tea. inside the restaurant is also quite spacious and has comfortable seating arrangements. But we were sitting next to the AC which can be quite breezy!

The restaurant is clean and tidy, which made the experience even more pleasant. Service was attentive, though with only a few tables it's hard to fully judge. Still, everything we needed was taken care of. The food was fresh, portions were generous, and prices felt fair. I especially appreciated that their pancake wasn't overly oily like you often find elsewhere. Dishes leaned on the milder side which made it easy to enjoy everything. The kimchi was a little salty, but the pickled radish was a nice balance. Big plus: they serve Asahi draft, which you don't see everywhere. One small miss was the sundubu being accidentally left off our order, but no big deal, just an excuse to come back and try it next time along with the Kalbi. Seating was comfortable, and I loved the individual wireless table lamps at each table which added a nice touch. Overall, a great first experience and I would definitely return to explore more of the menu.

We visited this place during lunch as a group of four. The server did not provide the lunch special menu initially, so we had to ask for it. She also rarely checked on our table and did not keep our water refilled, so the service was not exceptional. After we split the bill, the server confronted us about tipping and repeatedly asked why two people did not tip. One person ended up tipping due to the pressure, while the other did not. The server then said, "If you don't tip, I can't serve you next time." even after three of four people at our table tipped. When the person asked if that meant they couldn't come back to the restaurant, she said yes. The suggested tip started at 18% for lunch. If refusing service or banning customers for not tipping is restaurant policy, it should be clearly stated before customers order. The food itself was bland and lacked authentic Korean flavors. Overall, the experience was extremely uncomfortable and disappointing.

Also, I didn't realize the restaurant is run by Chinese folks now. Not sure if it always has been but that to me explains why some of the dishes seemed to have some familiar chinese flavours. Service was quite slow and we had to actually make an effort in flagging down our server. Washrooms are quite dirty and the odour made its way into the dining room area.

The food was good, with enough quantity to eat and take home as leftovers. We were a party of nine taking the regular (not BBQ), so they put two tables together for us. Our only complaint about that was that the tables were not the same height. The amenities (restrooms) were not very pleasant, as the trash cans looked as if they have not been emptied in a month (they were overflowing), and there was toiled paper on the floor. In addition, the floor did not look very clean. The side dishes were also quite good! My mandu were slightly burnt/over fried but the delicious and unique filling paired with the good sauce provided made it fine. My only issue is that when I try and return, craving their hearty kimchi stew on a cold day, their hours don't match what's posted online or on the paper outside their restaurant? For example, there's a paper sign on the door that says they take a break from x-3pm , on a day I was reallly looking forward to the comforting stew and warm vibes. I check at 3pm and their OPEN sign is off, alright maybe they need a minute or 2, so I do some rounds and pass by it a few times with it still being closed, I go back home and come back around 4:30 which is well past their reopening time and it's still closed. I gave up cause I was starving and went elsewhere. If this could be updated or made more clear then this review would be much higher. I love the food and it's genuinely authentic Korean food but it's frustrating having plans to go for lunch or even an early dinner and having them squashed by an inconsistent hours schedule.
