So first up I needed some liquid refreshment and Truffles was on hand. It is a lovely coffee and tea shop which has the desired caffeine based products for me. They've got a wide range of coffees (though I seldom stray from a fine black little number), teas and hot chocolate that looks awesome. You'll also get a complimentary Belgian Chocolate. Now we're talking. For a food fix get your laughing gear around one of the scones, teacakes, croissants freshly made sandwiches and Paninis, jacket potatoes, cakes or even a slab of gateaux. Then we move onto the trump card. The mouth watering and vast selection of Belgian chocolates. I had to leave with a few truffles and nut numbers. It would be rude not to. There are a few tables and chairs inside but I think the capacity for customers must be about 10. Outside at the front there are a couple more tables and there are a few more in the back garden. The atmosphere indoors is chaotic but fun, three members of staff shout orders and jokes to each other behind the tiny coffee bar, each of them laughing and jostling for space. You get the impression that your order won't be delivered very quickly but that it will be worth the wait, and the chaos is exciting rather than stressful, the laughter is infectious. This contrasts to the garden areas which are far more relaxed. Personally, given the right weather, I could happily spend all day here. It's perhaps more of a courtyard than a garden, but it's lined with plants, including strawberry plants. The strawberries were just starting to ripen during my visit and I couldn't help worndering if they use them in their recipes. I ordered the Spanish picadillo hash. It came with fried potatoes, cherry tomatoes, chorizo, black pudding and a fried egg. My sister's enormous veggie breakfast came with sourdough toast (all the bread comes from the Leeds Bread Co-op and loaves are available to buy from the cafe), mushrooms, eggs, cherry tomatoes and leak and cheese veggie sausages. We also both ordered delicious Soy lattes, the coffee is North Star. Everything was exactly as delicious as it sounds. I certainly wouldn't have noticed it would it not have been for a job interview being held here, and when my former manager said "Let's go to Browns for a coffee and a chat!" All their sandwiches are handmade in front of you, with far more variety than at, say Caffe Nero, with fresh ingredients and it takes the staff no time to serve you. I've always had a good experience with staff who seem pleasant enough, but not necessarily over-enthused. Fillings range from egg mayo, tuna crunch, a variety of chicken styles, cheeses and so on. Their coffees and teas are a little more humble, but cheap and so I'm certainly not complaining. The other bonus is that I've always managed to grab a seat outside - although inside it is a little limited. Browns is now a regular coffee stop of mine when I'm in town, even if it's to while away a bit of time with a good book and one of their drinks, it's a pleasant experience all round.
