I am new to Germany so I hold supermarkets to the same standards I am used to which might not the norm for the stores here. We bought meat that we ate the same day and was excellent. Everything else we had to throw away because it was already expired. Yes all the food (milk,cheese, yoghurt, salmon, spreads you name it). All was expired at the moment of the purchase, some even a few days before. It was ridiculous, next day had to go shopping again.I didn't check expiration dates because I assume that supermarkets don't keep on their shelves expired food, now I do. My advise is that if you shop for anything there check the expiration date before putting it in your cart.

We came to this location in search of Flohsamen (Psyllium), after striking out at our other regular haunts. They had a few different kinds, and though it wasn't cheap, it wasn't all that expensive either, considering how long it lasts (at least for my baking purposes). We also checked out the rest of the store and I was surprised to see how extensive the vegan section is, with a lot of fake meat and tons of vegan cheeses--I would venture to say the "cheese" selection rivals that of the two vegan grocery stores in town. Naturally, it's also rather costly, but it's good to know that the options exist. All in all, Vitalia is going to cost you a pretty penny if you do all your shopping there, but it's worth keeping in mind for some of the more obscure products you might be missing elsewhere.

Plenty of tea blends for a good price as well. The prices of the bio bread near the counter are VERY good but some other items (rice milk, almond milk etc.) are much more expensive than at a regular supermarket. This is understandable considering the fact that this is a small store but disappointing for someone on a budget.

They basically started the whole organic food trend years ago, targeting a mainstream audience. Since then, they mostly attract people that either vote for the Green Party or wear Birkenstocks every day. Prices here are on the higher end, but you're guaranteed to get your bread & butter free of any chemical food enhancements, which is actually not so much of a problem in Germany anyway, other than in the US. They also have a Bistro counter where they serve organic buffet lunch all day. I tried the Paprika-Haehnchen mit Kartoffeln (pepper chicken w/ potatoes, 3.50/6.50 Euro) which was decent. Pro tip: if you're a member prices actually cut almost in half.
