Awful company. We had to break a lease because of a new job, we gave them plenty of heads up and transparency and they had tenants move in 5 days into march, and ignored our requests to get pro rated march rent back which i had already paid. Not to mention we paid 500 pet deposit for a house that was covered in dog hair already and a disgusting moldy fridge and washer. We cleaned the house thoroughly and turned it around MUCH NICER than they had only to have them have no pride or common decency and still take our security, pet deposit, 2 months rent and a months extra rent , for a place we lived in for a month and a half. Helwig Inc. is both a property management company and realtor. My review is about the realtor services from Helwig Inc.'s Amanda Helwig: Amanda Helwig did a really amazing job helping me find and purchase a house that fit my needs. I couldn't recommend a realtor more highly. I started my search using a KW realtor who I just couldn't relate to very well and didn't have deep expertise in either of the geographic areas I was targeting. I soon found Amanda who I felt very comfortable with, and she had the most local knowledge of anyone I could even imagine. (She grew up here in the top local family-own real estate firm and is intimately involved with the local community.) Most realtors would get impatient with a 2 years search, but Amanda just wanted to see me settled into a house I'd feel was perfect for me. In the first year we made an offer on one place early on, but the seller wasn't willing to negotiate. We later found a really special house on a cul-de-sac with an exceptionally large backyard, but the home inspection (using the super-great inspector Amanda called in) found over 75 items needing repair or catch-up maintenance (including the roof) -- so I had to call that off. It was then that I found the perfect neighborhood; we mailed the dozen or two homes there I'd consider but it took another year of waiting before one came on the market. Amanda was also excellent in ensuring the negotiations went my way even for little things that I would otherwise have assumed I shouldn't make an issue of. And the rest of the purchase process went completely smoothly for me without so much as a hiccup (especially important since I was repeatedly traveling from NJ for my house-hunting). Given her patience and persistence in supporting me in my search and how well it worked out in the end, it's no wonder I'm rating Amanda 5 stars across the board. read more

Amanda Helwig did an outstanding job in selling my house. She helped me set a realistic price for the house, did a beautiful job staging it on the computer so prospective buyers could visualize it, and was always available to show the house when prospective buyers wanted to see it. Throughout the process she was most helpful, cooperative, friendly. She is especially effective because she combines empathy with a thorough knowledge of the territory. My house sold rapidly and I got my asking price. I don't think I could ever find a more competent, efficient and effective realtor than Amanda. read more

As mentioned in a previous post, Helwig provides property management and realtor services. Mine will focus on the management side. tl;dr, they're a fine company, if nothing goes wrong. We were tennants living at one of the apartments managed by Helwig. We lived in the apartment for 2 years and 3 months, and one time in that period we were 3 days late giving our rent check as we were on vacation, and forgot to send it before hand. (Be sure we received a phone call promptly telling us about this, to which we paid that day.) When we first signed the lease we were told that a board on the roof deck that had bowed up would be replaced, instead it was just incorrectly nailed back down. It then pryed back up through the nails and broke in the middle. It was however replaced right as we moved out. Wasn't that big of a deal, but was just the start. Throughout the first year, we didn't really have any issues, besides small things like the heat not working, and having no hot water, but those were simple fixes. In Dec we came home from vacation and one end of our kitchen light was dangling by the wires, the other end ripped the drywall screws out of the ceiling. We emailed them on Dec 27th to please fix. They emailed back and said they contacted the owner. Nothing was fixed until Jan 15. On Jun 2, our air conditioning unit broke, and our apartment was at an extremely uncomfortable 80 degrees. We emailed management to please fix. An HVAC company came out and refilled the leaking unit with freon. On July 9th it went out again, and I had to follow up on two occasions to hear anything back from them. The HVAC company came back out on Jul 14th to refill with freon. Doesn't seem like a long time in between but when the apartment is 86 degrees, and you go to sleep in your car so you can have the air on, its seems much longer. On Jul 24 the air went out again, and they finally agreed to replace the unit. Aug 10th we had to follow up as the air was not working, and then again on Aug 20th as we did not recieve any response from Helwig. They finally replaced the air conditioning at the beginning of September, when we told them we would be leaving the apartment. During that same summer, the pipe for the bathroom upstairs was leaking and everytime the toilet flushed, water would fall into the ceiling below, leaving a water bubble and large colored spot in the ceiling of the 1st floor bathroom. We told managment about this when we noticed, but they ignored it and was never fixed. Technically not our problem, as it had no effect on us, but figured we would try to help out the landlord before bigger issues arose. Oh well. We came home from work one night with the entire bottom floor smelling of chemicals. We pinpointed it to the freezer, to which the ice maker had somehow melted, and burned marks into the side of the freezer. I had to use an oven mitt to disconnect and remove the ice box as it was too hot to touch. We told management about this...they told us they think the freezer door was probably left open, and did not fix anything. In Aug, we were in the process of purchasing a house and told them that Sept would be our last month, as we were month to month in our lease. The lease stated that we were to give 2 months notice, which they let us out a month early due to all the issues we had with them. They had someone rent the apartment the next month so no money lost anyway. After all of this, we thought we were finally done dealing with them. Then we received a bill from Peco for the apartment for the month of October. Peco had not switched our names off of the apartment, and back to the landlord like we had asked them, who would have had to pay the amount if they had done it correctly. When we asked Helwig to pay us back for the electricity that was used at the apartment during that time, they refused and told us we were over-reacting. If you're going to use them as a management company, just hope nothing goes wrong. read more

Helwig totally sucks. They charged me for a shower head that I bought myself. The one that was there when we moved in was broken and we had to shower at my mother's for a few days until they finally fixed it, using a shower head I already owned rather than supplying their own. What's more, Shawn Hall told me that I wasn't a licensed plumber and shouldn't assume that the shower head was broken. Very insulting and condescending. Guess what? The shower head was broken, of course. The management is lazy, indifferent, not responsive, very slow, etc. Dan himself is a pretty decent guy but the rest are just a bunch of mokes. I don't know about buying a house but for renting, these guys are horrible. read more

I cannot speak for their Real Estate business (online consensus says they are great), but I can speak for the Property Management aspect of their company. I have never worked with a more unresponsive and terribly unorganized group of people. Pros: They are extremely responsive when they think you missed a payment (even though you paid in advance) Cons: Not responsive to emails. Lost numerous items that I have sent them. All around they try to avoid helping you. They took over the property a year into my lease. The previous realty company was great, but unfortunately the owner of the management company passed away and the property was picked up by Dan Helwig Inc. I am very understanding and made sure to help them through the transition. I did the following: 1) Sent them a set of keys because they did not have any. I went to the store and made a spare copy of keys and mailed them to Dan Helwig Inc (even though this was clearly a responsibility of the owner of the house, not mine, but I was nice about it). I sent them WITH MY RENT. They cashed my rent check, but LOST the keys!?!? I even labeled them with the address and taped them to the keys. They yelled at me saying I never sent them and made me make another set. I was not refunded for either of these sets. 2) They did not have any records of me paying my rent or deposit (never got it from the previous management company) so I send them a copy of every check to that date and included a table with all the payment dates. All forgiven because they just took over the property and I was understadning. Several months later, they tell me I have missed payments and I am behind on rent. AGAIN I send them copies of the bank statements with "cashed by Dan Helwig Realty" on them. REALLY?!?! You cashed the checks (SEVERAL CHECKS) and did not keep a record of any of them. 3) Any time I had a maintenance request I had to email multiple times and call to get someone to respond. 4) Finally, I had enough with this headache and moved out. I moved out and waited my 30 days. I waited a few extra days...still nothing. No deposit check in the mail. So I email them on day 35. No response. I email again and then see a check in the mail the next day. It was dated when I sent the first email (aka 35 days) Several days AFTER IT WAS REQUIRED BY LAW TO BE MAILED. They also did not have the decency to respond to my email even though they clearly read it and realized they needed to send the check. The property I lived at was great and I wanted to stay longer, but I could not deal with that nightmare anymore. read more
